2 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, With View Of York Minster
About Nigel Smith
My wife and I are both professionals and currently live in the USA. I was a student at the University of York and we love the city. We have four boys and The Brierley is our second holiday rental in the UK and we hope to build on the success of our first property.
Nigel Smith purchased this Apartment in 2012
Why Nigel Smith chose York
This property has been renovated by the same people who built Blake Mews. The location is fantastic- right in the city center yet very quiet.

Great location but lacking hospitality
The view from the windows is amazing, but we were told on arrival that there was only bedding for 4 even though we had booked for 6, so they would come the following day with sheets. I had to argue for them to fix it which they reluctantly did. Coffee pod machine only but no pods. Ran out of toilet paper the day we arrived!! Super Tiny main bathroom! Had to stand next to toilet it close the door and it no windows in it. No working extractor fans in either bathroom so fogged up the house. Great location though for walking the town, and the furnishings are lovely. It just needs more thought for the renters, which was a massive contrast to the last property we stayed in that left us dinner for the first night (amazing and unexpected) plus basic cooking ingredients like oil, spices etc which are inexpensive for them but extremely helpful to people self catering.
The property is lovely as is the flat. However, it was difficult to get in and a neighbor helped us. The carpets had not been cleaned,we needed to purchase toilet paper and paper towels, the only way we could operate the garbage disposal was to get under the sink and do so manually. The freezer was completely iced in and we had to chip ice out since it was leaking on the floor.
Clean & lovely place. York minster just outside
Great Place - Poorly Managed
The flat was as described in a great location opposite York Minster. It was clean and spacious with plenty of high-end cooking gear and comfortable beds. When we arrived, however, there was no heat. We phoned the property manager who told us to read the instruction manual, but the lengthy instructions she left didn't make any sense. She said she couldn't get heating engineers in on a weekend, so we were without heat for three days. It turns out two of the the thermostats had dead batteries. (Why design heating thermostats to run on batteries instead of 24v house current?) In addition, we had no wi-fi. I tried to reset the router, but it was nowhere to be found. The heating engineer found it in a locked closet. Why not leave it out for tenants to reset which has to be done quite often for most routers? A wi-fi router is not something anyone would want to steal or damage. The wi-fi instructions also forgot to mention that there was an ethernet cable behind the desk in case the wi-fi didn't work. So besides no heat for three days, we had no internet and had to use up data on our phones. Given the price we paid to let the flat, it would have been nice to have been met by the manager when we arrived, but we only had phone contact with her. A confused Chinese family arrived at our door late at night. They were looking for a flat let by the same property manager. It took us sometime wandering around the area in the dark to help them find the flat and gain entrance to it. Once again, she should have been there to meet them when they arrived. In general, this would have been a 5 star review were it not for the disappointing management.
Absolutely outstanding with a breath taking view
Beautifully appointed apartment in a perfect location. The whole place was very clean and well maintained. The owners have thought of everything you could ever need for a luxury holiday in York. We will recommend and most certainly return as soon as we can!
