The perfect homebase for the perfect carribean vacation!

This was my second time staying in Puerto Rico within the Wyndham Rio Grande villas but the first at Luis' home. Our experience with Luis was nothing short of awesome. He was so accommodating when our flight was rescheduled for days later due to a storm here in the northeast, he simply moved our reservation and extended it for us so that we didn't need to cut our trip short. His responses to emails were quick and we met him within an hour of our arrival when he gave my husband a quick tutorial of the included golf cart (super handy) and checked that all was well with the property for our stay. He checked in via text message one other time during our stay just to ensure all was well.

The pictures on-line don't really do this villa enough justice. Not only is it beautiful but Luis included everything we could have needed to make our stay comfortable. During this visit, my husband and I brought along three children which meant we went through a ton of towels (which plenty were provided). The villa also provided for plenty of room with gorgeous cathedral ceilings as we were on the top third floor. Luis even had coolers we were able to load with ice for our trips to the beaches. And the beds were SO very comfortable which we appreciated greatly as the place we had stayed prior didn't have such comfort. The view from the balcony of the golf course and El Yunque was wonderful to wake up to each morning.

As someone else mentioned, the villas are not directly on the beach but there really is no need to be as there are tons of beaches very easily accessible and at no cost. During this trip, we spent time at Seven Seas Beach and Luquillo along with the villages' own pool and resort pool beside the ocean. We also spent a day hiking in the rain forest to a waterfall where you can swim, went out on a catamaran to another island and snorkeled for the day, went horseback riding through the rainforest, ate many wonderful dinners including one at Richie's right up the hill from the resort with the most amazing view, and spent a day showing the kids Old San Juan.

We would come back and stay at Luis' villa in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact, none of us wanted to leave. I'd give this home 10 stars if VRBO had them. Thank you so much Luis for providing our family with the home base to make so many wonderful memories.

Beautiful but not beach front

  • 4 of 5

I just recently stayed at this property with 4 adults (all in our early 30's) from 02/11-02/18. The property is better than pictured- very spacious and provided us with pretty much everything we needed for our stay. We went to the store and bought food for the week we would be there and the kitchen was equipped with dishes, pots and pans, and some spices. There were plenty of linens and towels and some beach towels to use as well as a few beach chairs and a cooler. Speaking of the beach- it is NOT within walking distance of this property so if you are looking for a beachfront condo this is not the place for you. The property is located on the grounds of the Wyndham Rio Mar hotel but is probably 2-3 miles back from the beach towards the back of the golf course. It is approximately a 5 minute drive to the closest beach. There are several pools on the property and the closest one is a few minutes walk or a quick drive from the property- we usually drove because we were carrying a cooler and all of our supplies. Luis, who is the owner of the property, is always easy to get a hold of and very pleasant. Definitely a beautiful property but if we came again would probably stay somewhere directly on the beach.

Exceeded our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 5 incredible nights. The villa is bigger than it looks and completely sun filled. The kitchen is top notch, the owner's photo only shows part of it. The balcony is wonderful, we spent as much time as possible out there. The private Master Bedroom balcony was an unexpected bonus. The baths are very clean and well appointed. The beds, linens and towels are hotel quality. There is a giant Master closet for all your clothes and shoes. Since it's on the top floor the ceilings are vaulted, adding volume to each room. We really loved the unit as well as the pool. The grounds are lovely and well maintained. Rio Mar was a good choice for proximity to Fajardo, ElYunque and San Juan.

Excellent Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Luis was great to work with and was very patient with my many questions since this was our first time renting through VRBO :)

The Villa is much larger than it looks in the photographs, nice high ceilings, huge master bathroom and closet. Great full bath in second bedroom. Kitchen was fully stocked. All you need is food and drinks.

The first day we checked out the private beach front pool that is past the resort hotel on the right. It was GREAT. we took a nice long walk to the left on the beach to the point. Absolutely beautiful. Was great watching my 6 year old play in the waves.

Later that day we ventured over to the resort pool. Technically this is not a feature included with the rental of the villas be we had NO PROBLEMS. the resort pool was great. We all went down the water slide several times. The pool area was quiet enough that I felt safe picking a spot to sit and letting my 6 year old make her rounds to the slide, hot tub, and main pool. (And that's saying a lot because I'm a helicopter mom). It was gorgeous. They have resident iguanas that are used to people and one even swam across the pool! Might as well have been JAWS the way the kids scattered!

The next morning it was raining so we went to the rain forest. We ate at the station just above the La Mina falls trail and then went back down the mountain to hike to La Mina Falls. It was a great hike, about 1.4 miles round trip. Totally worth it. The trails are narrow and with it being slick I had a hold of my daughter's hand the whole time but I'm sure she would have been fine on her own. There were lots of kids on that hike too and several people were in the water at the falls though my daughter jumped right out when she felt the cold water temps :)

Since it was still raining when we left we decided to go to Luquillo Beach for the afternoon. It was overcast there but not raining. It costs a minimal fee to park and a few dollars to use the restroom but those are the only fees.

the sand is white and there are NO WAVES, at all!!!!! The water was very very clear and after being in it about 5 minutes it felt great. Even the fish were clear :)

My daughter made friends with a few local kiddos and they built sand castles.

5:00 was the prettiest time of day there. I'd go on but I ran out of characters :) The rest of the days we spent at the hotel pool. Thanks Luis for a great trip to paradise!

Fabulous Condo!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th trip to Puerto Rico and the 2nd time staying on the Rio Mar Property. Loved the condo - it was our favorite of all the places we have stayed! Very spacious, clean, and well-appointed. Fabulous view from the balcony and very private. Besides all the resort has to offer, easy access to beautiful Luquillo beach, a short drive to the rain forest, only about 45 min. to old San Juan. Many wonderful local restaurants nearby to enjoy. Owner was a pleasure to work with.

Lovely Spacious Villa

  • 4 of 5

The owner, Luis, is very nice; his English is excellent. He was helpful and we two older women certainly needed help: we could not open the lockbox for the key and then needed a ride to a car rental as a car is a necessity. (Get a pass for the car at the security guard house.) Luis pointed out where to buy groceries upon our return.

The condo is lovely and the kitchen very well appointed with everything but a teakettle. Paper products were plentiful. The balcony has high stucco walls below the opening so there is no view except treetops when sitting (but one is also protected from rain and wind.) There are plenty of linens but no bath floor mats or washcloths.

When we arrived it initially seemed spotless but it turned out one of the bathrooms had not been cleaned and one of the beds had not been changed. Luis responded quickly and had the cleaners come the next day.

It would have been very helpful to have had a small informational notebook about Rio Mar- with a map, the times the hotel and golf club restaurants were open (the Iguana Pub's food at the Golf Club was delicious), the phone number for Security, directions to grocery store/ the nearby rainforest/San Juan and the fact that parking is charged when in the hotel. It would be helpful to have in writing how to regulate A/C, what to do with trash, whether there is recycling, and how to work the TV remotes. I wish there had been a radio as I did not think to bring CDs.

The unit is on the third floor and there’s no elevator. The tiles are very pretty on the stairs and in the condo, but are slippery when wet. We shut off the A/C the whole time we were there- the downside of that was the chirping of the birds and tree frogs all night. Traffic can be heard.

Then nearby pool was delightful and we did get to the beach one time between showers but it was too windy to stay very long and the surf was pounding, so we could not swim. We did go to the nearby rainforest; the road is twisty and quite bumpy in places. Old San Juan was pretty but three huge cruise ships were in town so it was very crowded. We had lunch at Barrachina’s on Fortaleza which was fun.
