Why Betsy and Pete chose Yosemite Area

Imagine this. Living in a forest of trees; surrounded by Yosemite National Park. Quiet, uncrowded, peaceful. Look above at night and explore the stars of the Milky Way stretched before you in the darkening sky. This is what makes Yosemite West a very special place to stay inside the gates of the Park.

What makes this apartment unique

Jumping Deer apartment's living area is in a quiet setting nestled among tall pine trees. Sit back on the outdoor deck with book in hand and rustling trees around you. Awesome! Barbeque some steaks on the grill and discuss the day's adventures far from the crowds of the valley. Your quiet retreat does exist here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time here. Waking up after a very comfortable sleep, baking pancakes in the kitchen. After breakfast, taking a shower which we didn't want to leave!

And after exploring the Valle, coming back to the Jumping Deer and put the BBQ on.

We saw a deer family, a lot of squirrels and even a coyote.

Great retreat after exploring Yosemite

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I enjoyed spending Memorial Day weekend at Jumping Deer. It was clean, comfortable, and we loved grilling after a long day hiking and exploring Yosemite. It was a nice alternative to staying in Yosemite Valley, a scenic 30 minute drive away — right past Tunnel View. Plus the road to Glacier Point is nearby. Be sure to buy gas and groceries outside the Park, as Betsy and Pete recommend. Satellite WiFi didn't work well, it may have already reached its monthly data limit, but we didn't really require it. For GPS navigation, we found it helpful to download Yosemite as an offline area in Google Maps before the trip. It was great to meet Pete at the end of our stay — you can tell he and Betsy really care for the place. Overall Jumping Deer provided the rest and relaxation we needed after long days outdoors.

cozy & quiet

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at The Jumping Deer. It was very comfortable and equipped with all the essentials. The drive into Yosemite Valley was pleasant and not too far from the apartment. The owners were also very responsive when we had questions and concerns. I didn't have a problem with the wifi as mentioned in other reviews. Would definitely recommend The Jumping Deer for visiting Yosemite National Park!

Quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

The description and pictures of the Jumping Deer are accurate. It is a comfortable little hideway, perfect for two people. Little extras like foil and plastic wrap were much appreciated, as you hate having to buy a whole role of that kind of stuff for just a few days stay. As others have noted, this is remote from grocery stores and restaurants, so bring what you need with you. It was easier to find than I thought it might be (didn't need to use GPS coordinates), just follow the map provided and go Right at the mailboxes. (Note that the default coordinate system on an iPhone are not the same as those provided. The iPhone goes to minutes and seconds. Convert the coordinates provided before you go, because, as stated, the cell service is minimal.) The other thing to note is that it is a long flight of stairs from the parking area down to Jumping Deer; this could be an issue for some. If you are going to Glacier Point, the road is only a few miles from here, so this is ideally situated for that. We planned to, but couldn't because the road was not yet opened. The rest of the park was beautiful though.

Very convenient, priced reasonable, but not quiet

  • 3 of 5

If you are at all sensitive to hearing your neighbors on the other side of the flimsy walls or if you don't like hearing people walk and bang around above you then this place is not for you. There is a large suite above the Jumping Deer owned by same person, so there could be a very large group above you with children which has the potential for lots of banging around. We were lucky and only had to hear people 2 of the 5 nights we stayed since it was vacant part of the time. As light sleepers it was hard for my husband and I to go to sleep and stay asleep if the people above us were on a different sleeping schedule. It was not the fault of the renters above us, but rather the building is not designed to stop sound between units! It is really important to us to have quiet and not have to hear other people and kids crying on the other side of the wall or from the ceiling above us, but maybe that is not a big deal for others. We loved the location! It is an easy 30 minute drive to the Yosemite Valley. The miles is actually only 10-12 but the curves in the road make you drive about 30 miles per hour. The staff was very responsive to questions we had and answered the phone immediately! The place was clean and up to date. The neighborhood was very quiet. In previous reviews there was a comment about the bed being saggy and I might agree with that. I felt like I rolled towards my hubby, but maybe others might just call this a very soft mattress. Again, it is all about personal preference and your tolerance for things. We would recommend this place if you don't mind hearing others. You can't beat the location and the price!!!!!! And AGAIN, the service was fantastic!.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We appreciate feedback from our guests. You pointed out that "the service was fantastic!" and that our people were helpful during your stay. Thank you so much for that! We are happy you found the apartment "clean and up to date". We agree with you that we are in a great location; close to Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point and Wawona, so you can enjoy many of the things that Yosemite has to offer. Mattresses are a matter of personal taste. It has been fine for most guests, but we are sorry it did not suit you. Also, we do apologize for the guests in the house above. We try to encourage our guests to be mindful of others, but it appears that they were not in your case.

Overall what we expected

  • 3 of 5

This apartment had the basic essentials for our stay and essentially was what expected. As others note, it is fairly remote which we were prepared for and about a 30-40 minute drive from the Valley, gas stations, or any stores. One thing that soured our experience a little bit was a power outage that occurred about an hour after we got in, leaving us without power or heat for several hours-- while this was not in the owner's control, we were not given much reassurance or help while this was being sorted out, though we were provided with a few dim flashlights. The house also originally lacked towels and could have benefitted from some cleaning supplies which (except for dish soap, hand soap, and dishwasher detergent), were not provided. Bottom line- the apartment served our purposes, was a good price, and had all the basics as well as some nice touches (like a bbq), but the hospitality could have been slightly better.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your feedback. It is very important to us. We are happy that you found the apartment had "some Nice touches", that you had the basic essentials and the apartment met your overall expectations. There was an emergency power outage which caught everyone by surprise with no prior notification to prepare for it. It is unfortunate that it happened during your stay. Our support people should have known about the lanterns we have for these eventualities and provided you with more than just flashlights. There were some inexperienced people working during that time, but a lack of towels is an inexcusable mistake and we have reported this to the housekeeping manager.
