Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

First time ever going to an actual Island, everyone on the island super friendly. The home we stayed in perfect for a small family or a small group of you and your friends. Very clean and organized. Homeowner Frank Neal, answered all the questions I had. Thank you! :)

In The Nature Of It All

  • 5 of 5

We went to Daufuskie for a wedding. Location was perfect close to all areas of the island we were driving to by golf cart. Everyone was so nice, true southern hospitality but what else would you expect being in the Low Country. Frank the owner so very nice and helpful. If you want some relaxing little cottage get a way, this is it. We will be staying there again, price is right and no fuss. Thanks again Frank, we had a blast. Brandi was great, had a flat on the golf cart and she came right away with another one!!

Simple, clean, perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

Amazing Daufuskie Island getaway for 2. Perfect location, one turn away from the beach. Couldn't be happier with the cottage and the affordability, not everyone that comes to Daufuskie is a millionaire with a 90 person wedding. Very clean and well stocked for your vacation. I highly recommend The Evan Cottage and will be booking a stay again soon. Rent a golf cart, have the time of your life... its simple. Thanks Frank.

Horrid Conditions after Hurricane Matthew

  • 1 of 5

We arrived a few weeks after Hurricane Matthew to find the rental had not been cleaned or secured after the hurricane, despite the owner assuring us it was all good. The unit was horribly musty and moldy, right down to the sheets and towels. Washing machine was broken, so we couldn't even wash them (owner told us that after we got there). Trash had not been taken out from the kitchen or bathroom from previous renters. Water lines had not been run in a some time, so the water was very cloudy, almost like detergent, until the next day.

The worst part was the large family of cockroaches living in the cabinets in the kitchen. Every cabinet and drawer had them scurrying around. I have some pics, don't think I'm allowed to post them here. They especially liked the DVD cabinet and Pulp Fiction. At least they had decent taste. Dishes, silverware, cups, pots and pans were all covered in roach droppings. Counter tops and stove too. Thankfully there were adequate cleaning supplies and bug spray. It took hours before we were comfortable enough to even sit down. We kept finding dead roaches on the floor and on the bed through the next day. The smell never went away, even after cleaning the mold off the window AC unit and running it nonstop.

Daufuskie is a very remote place, no bridge, limited ferry or private boat only to get there. It is a significant part of the island's charm. However, it also meant that if we didn't tough it out here, we'd have no where to go. Essentially trapped. The options were stay there and try and cope, or sleep outside with no gear for two nights. I wish I had brought a tent instead. All the time not spent on post-hurricane recovery (which was extensive, never seen so many downed trees and blocked roads) was spent fighting this rental to make it somewhat habitable until we could leave.

The owner was responsive via email, but the responses weren't helping. He wasn't anywhere around, and as I said before, it looked like no one had even seen the unit since the hurricane. There's nothing wrong with the description of the property. It would have been quite nice in fact, had anyone bothered to even check on it and clean it up after the hurricane!

There are other fine rentals on the island I've used before, unfortunately they were booked this time around. Afterwards, VRBO strung me along for a month before telling me via form email they don't actually offer refunds. Good luck.

Owner's Response: Well my understanding is that this renter went over to the Island for work (not for me) and it didn't work out for him as he thought, so he has attempted to see if he could recoup some of his losses from my rental. First, there were plenty of rental options on the island on these dates (off peak dates). Second, my cleaning staff (who live on the island) checked the property a day prior to his arrival and even went the day of his arrival to drop of more clean sheets, towels, etc, and found no evidence of his descriptions. My property had been checked on and in fact rented after the storm. In his (seperate) complaint to VRBO he said the AC didn't work, but in fact, I was there the following day and it worked fine, in fact his high temp for his entire stay there was 68 degrees (anyone can verify this). Also, there is nothing wrong with the water besides that it is highly presured/oxygenated aka lots of bubbles and once the bubbles rise is as clean, clear and pure as it comes. Also, the cottage is sprayed for bugs and I am sure a dead bug may be found as a result it is in the middle of the woods but it is cleaned and inspected regulary, my family and I stay here regularly and have never had a problem. I understand renting on VRBO all it takes is one review to reflect negatively on our rental, although I feel unfairly. I would say we have had a long list of positive reviews and I would hope that this single review does not effect your decision to rent with us. If anyone has any questions feel free to call or email me. We strive to make your stay wonderful in our little cottage on Daufuskie!! Thanks, Frank

Cozy cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I are from Savannah, GA and took our boat for a weekend getaway (my Christmas present). We were very pleased with the cottage. Cozy, nothing fancy, but just as described. Very clean, comfortable bed. Frank was helpful with a few fetails before our trip. We had a blast at Daufuskie Crab Company and Marshside Mamas meeting the locals in January. John and Debbie loaned us their golf cart in the true spirit of southern hospitality! We toured the local farm and the rum distillery and had fun on the golf cart through the golf courses and beach (not really allowed but we didn't get caught!) Another couple joined us Saturday night on the futon...not as comfortable, but still worth the trip! The cottage had ample supplies for a simple weekend! Don't come to this island looking for luxury...disconnecting from reality and connecting with nature and the local community is the best!

A cozy little getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Daufuskie .I came across it one night searching places on VRBO for Savannah. It was AWESOME!!!! More than what we expect. A nice place to get out of touch with the real world!! (If you have AT&T cell service)If your looking for the Hilton you have come to the wrong place!!!! This is a small quaint, cozy little cabin. It is fully stocked plus some with anything you need!! The only thing we didn't realize is to bring your own drinks. The local general store is nice but very expensive.

Frank, the owner, I can't say enough good things about!! He was quick to respond and answered all my crazy questions!!I'm a planner and not knowing anything about this island was totally out of characteristic for me so I had many questions Frank was gracious enough to answer. He was so very helpful when we had to leave unexpectedly early 2 days early due to my father in law's passing. His generous, helpful disposition made this island even better.

I would definitely LOVE to return!!! (and we don't even play golf!)
