About Matthew

Matthew is a native Virginian whose family have loved and enjoyed the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay his whole life. Lachelle grew up in the Midwest on the plains, kayaking, canoeing, and enjoying water-sports on the rivers and lakes that weave their way through Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri.

Why Matthew chose Heathsville

We were stunned when we pulled up into the drive the first time to see 711 Marshalls Beach Road. The wind was strong, whitecaps rolled across the mouth of the river. (Lachelle felt right at home, as if she was back on the windy plains in Iowa.) As we entered the garden gate, we were stunned. No one could have prepared us for the expansive, break-taking view of the Chesapeake Bay that greeted us as we entered the courtyard.

What makes this house unique

Our home is the only home on Marshalls Beach that is rented. You are surrounded by Richmond and Northern Virginia families who have traveled here every weekend through the summer for as many as seven generations. Southern hospitality abounds.

The design of the home is the greatest feedback we receive. Every local contractor, builder, real estate agent or neighbor who visits us at the house are floored -- completely awestruck by the property. Many of these folks grew up on the Bay and River or have lived/worked the properties there for years. We think that says it all.

Perfect GAteway

  • 5 of 5

I will start by saying that this was one of the best experiences that I have had renting ANY place (or hotel) in a hot destination. It was SO lovely, and I was so SO happy there, that I was thrilled to be able to stay for 4 days and 3 nights. My requirements at the time of booking were for 2 adult couples the house was perfect for a small group. If we had any tiny issues or questions, they were attended to or answered immediately…very forthcoming. I would insert here that prior military and have traveled rather extensively spending time on the road in hotels, and have very high expectations and requirements when I’m spending time and money of my own in any place…

I would recommend this property to all my friends and family and I would return in a heartbeat…Hope to, in fact. I wouldn’t send youngsters who want to “party” etc to this location, this is for a quieter more mature and peaceful family or set of friends. The house was in perfect condition and had everything we could possibly need to cook, clean, and look after or entertain ourselves. The wifi signal was strong enough for all three of us to conduct business and keep in touch with loved ones as much as needed. The views are spectacular, we even watched from the cupola at midnight! The location is peaceful, safe and secluded, and perfect for days of hanging around there quietly if you like. Beach Towels, Beach Chairs, basic snorkel gear, was all available. A car is required absolutely if you are going to stay here, but there is so much to see and do, you would want one anyway. we were 30 mins to 1 hour in the car to the grocery stores, shops and everything else, this location was perfect for us. Highly recommended, service and facilities exceptional

Beautiful property, peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful retreat on the Potomac River that is private, comfortable and relaxing. The home itself is lovely and well-maintained, but it's the views that make this property great. Three floors, glass doors on all floors to maximize the views. I love just gazing at the water and we did that for hours. Stayed for four days and didn't turn on a TV until three days in, when it started raining. Even raining, the views were amazing.

A few notes for folks who may not be familiar with the Chesapeake Bay area. There is a lot of foliage and the area can be quite damp, so mosquitoes may be an issue. Bring bug spray and a citronella candle. The screened-in porch on the side of the house is great if you have a big mosquito day. We also found that sitting on the third-floor deck, which is further away from the plants and has higher winds, kept most of the bugs away. We sat up there for hours reading books and just looking at the boats, fishermen and wildlife.

We wanted a quiet getaway and weren't interested in doing much dining out or exploring, but Kilmarnock was a very cute town with little shops and restaurants. We loaded up on groceries at the Wal Mart and just made simple meals at the house at our leisure. Everything we needed was there in terms of pots and pans, utensils, etc.

The furniture is very comfortable ... the master bed felt great and we slept great, waking up to the beautiful sunrise. The master shower had a great waterfall shower head and bench. Double sinks and lots of counterspace.

Matthew was very prompt and helpful during the booking process and everything went smoothly.

We definitely hope to come back soon, it was the best vacation we've had in a long time!

Wonderful house, magnificent views!!

  • 5 of 5

The house and property are beautiful! When we first got there we had some questions for Matt and he responded quickly and thoroughly! Very quiet and private. If you take enough food with you, you won't have to leave the house. I highly recommend it for a peaceful getaway!!

Beautiful spot for relaxing but forget about summertime fun!

  • 3 of 5

The house itself was nice and the location is beautiful. The neighbors we met were unbelievably friendly and kind - true Southern Hospitailty at its best! The house needs some TLC as far as little wall blemishes and filthy door knobs. Exterior lacks seating as the lounge chairs on the tiny patio were broken and the deck itself isn't wide enough for chairs. The kitchen is nice and very convenient although there is a nasty pizza stone inside the oven that REALLY needs to be replaced. The trash can in the kitchen needs to be replaced as it was unusable and the outdoor can was WAY too small to house anymore than a few bags (If you are staying more than a day or two its a hassle!). These little inconveniences are somewhat disruptive to a vacation but not a deal breaker. The true deal breaker is the July and August "secret" that we were not told about before our trip. The jelly fish made it impossible to use the beach area or swim. There were hundreds if not thousands of them along the shore. You could see them from inside the house there were so many of the little buggers! The only outdoor water activity we were able to enjoy was fishing and crabbing from the dock. So sad that such a great water opportunity isn't usable. I was very disappointed that we were not told about this issue - I would have definitely taken my kids somewhere we could be swimming and paddle boarding - which I completely disclosed to Mathew before we booked the property, and he never mentioned the issue. He only told me about the "nettles problem" after our arrival when I asked him what to do about it - and was told it was a well known issue for the area. So, in a nut shell - if you want to swim or do any water activity at all do not rent here during July and August! As pretty as it is...... there are only so many hot summer hours you can sit on the dock staring at the water, bitter about booking the property that boasts a beach and water access!

Owner's Response: Understand the disappointment of the renters but she had mentioned they stayed on the Chesapeake Bay in a prior year so just assumed they knew about the nettles. Also, her exact words when inquiring were "... hoping to switch gears and instead have a quiet, mini family vacation. Looking forward to fishing and crabbing!". We try to be up front as much as possible as we're not looking to ruin anyone's vacation plans. Also, please note that the stone patio is probably 300sqft total and there are 4 adirondacks and 2 loungers available outside for seating.

Beautiful view

  • 3 of 5

Owner is friendly and quick to respond to questions. House is beautiful, with a gorgeous waterfront view from every room. However, there is no easy pathway to the fishing pier, several uneven rocks make it extremely difficult to maneuver. Pier deck is poorly built, no handrails and uneven steps would be dangerous for older visitors or children. Too many jellyfish to enjoy small beachfront from neighbors path, as you can't get in the water with jellyfish. Upstairs bed is comfortable and shower is amazing with many jets. Quite a distance to restaurants and shopping, so come supplied with food to cook. Also, no coffee pot or toaster. Otherwise, home is well supplied and clean.

Owner's Response: We have a toaster oven available (in the pantry) and a french press (in the process of getting a k-cup). Feel free to always ask as we try and respond promptly :-)

Perfect location for a relaxing vacation!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful, clean property is situated perfectly, with wonderful water views in every room of the main home. We had a great time even though the weather didn't cooperate. We played board games and sipped our coffee relaxing in the rocking chairs letting the nice breeze flow through the livingroom. The whole 2nd floor is the master suite and has wonderful views as well. The 3rd floor is the super cute cupola. We enjoyed sitting in the dark up there, watching the lightning storm that was many miles away, reflecting off the water. The kitchen has everything you could possibly need and want to prepare spectacular meals. We don't typically dine out, so it was refreshing to have everything we usually use at home, while on vacation to eat well. There is a beach practically in the back yard, where we took great photos of wildlife in the creek and wetlands behind the beach. The patio, side porch, and balconies all come with great vantage points. The closest store is only 11 miles away and a quick drive. We really enjoyed our stay and hope to be able to come back soon with our kids. They will love it too. Matthew was quick to respond and provided great customer service.
