About Manager

We are a couple of intellectuals, we studied and worked in several European countries and often travell around. We have no family links with the island of Hydra, but we fall in love with it at first sight.

The natural beauty, the sympathetic affinity among rocks, sea, pines and the deep traces of histories and myths of gods, pirates and heroes are the elixir of this lasting love affair.

Why Manager chose Idra

We bought this outstanding, 200 years old, very large and beautiful historical mansion six years ago, when it was a ruin, inhabited only by the many seagulls fishing in the ocean spaces below it.

We fully renovated it to its initial condition with the approval of the Greek Archeological Service and enhanced it with all the contemporary amenities bringing it to high functional and aesthetic standards, obtaining so the approval of the Greek Tourism Organization.

Now, we are happy to live long periods in it and host nice people from around the world in the privileged, fully independent guesthouse of this unique landmark of Hydra.

The seagulls are always here to carry like "drones" the glances of the soul to pirouettes in the limpid light of Hydra.

What makes this apartment unique

Unique majestic views of the port, the town and the ocean from any point.

Comfortable, all facilities, high aesthetics...

The Seagulls' Nest is very friendly to and welcomes all nice and civilised people independently of their personal characteristics.

Town network water is not drinkable in Hydra. Mineral drinkable water is provided with no limit to the guests in the Seagulls' Nest. This is an old mansion, built in 18th century. For two centuries it was the house of a family of pirates and then sea captains, heroes of the 1821 Independence War and shipowners until 1985. There are no 'Ghosts' around, but there are a lot of memories and character. It was built at a strategic position high on the rock with strong stone walls as a defensive castle. Relics found by the present owner are carefully gathered in a private collection. A large rain water collector, once the only sauce of water, still provides water taps in the gardens and the large terrace for 'primitive', very pleasant showers. The owner and manager of the property, an academic, is always available and willing to ensure very good and friendly hospitality in more European languages. The place is offered to the guests in excellent condition and absolutely spotless.

Perfect house in perfect place!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here in late June with our two teenage children. Everything form beginning to end was perfect. Our host was helpful from the first enquiry to seeing us on our way at the end of the week. Although in the adjoining apartment, he was invisible unless we needed advice, which he was very willing to give. The apartment is a beautifully restored old house refurbished with flair and high quality interiors. It isn't large but was perfect for the four of us. The terraces at all levels, give spectacular views over the harbour and the steps up and down will keep you fit - not ideal for those with young children or knee problems but we enjoyed the daily walk up and down. Hydra is the most sophisticated of the Greek Islands we have visited but priced accordingly - cuisine is international rather than typical Greek though you can find more of the old style tavernas if you wind into the back streets. Beaches are plentiful and mainly organised although with the help of sea taxis (€50) you can explore more remote areas. Overall a fantastic property in a fantastic place - we can't recommend this highly enough.

Architectural gem with breathtaking views of Hydra top notch hospitality!

  • 5 of 5

There were so many incredible aspects to our stay at Seagull's Nest, quite frankly, I am not sure where to begin. From the minute we arrived, our lovely, and incredibly gracious hosts took care of every detail. We were met at the ferry by a man and his mule to help carry our luggage up the hill. The guest house is situated on the lower level of one of Hydra's most splendid villas which has been lovingly restored, or shall I say rebuilt, brick-by-brick, to its original glory. We opened the doors to our guest quarters and were immediately blown away. The setting is light, airy and impeccably decorated with art, both traditional and modern. This place could be on the front cover of a design magazine. The views from the guest homes' multiple terraces will take your breath away. The all new kitchen is extremely well equipped and our hosts showered us with lovely extras that included a beautiful bottle of wine, Nespresso coffee pods, perfectly ripe fruit, and delicious sweets from a local specialty bakery. The linens are top notch and so are the appliances and furniture. My absolute favorite aspect of this rental: the terraces at sundown. I have taken many trips to Greece and this rental experience was, by far, the best. It's a hike to get to get to the Seagull's Nest, but its well worth it. And is situated in a really fascinating part of the island - one rich with history. What a place! I simply cannot wait to return.

Wonderful apartment with stunning view

  • 5 of 5

The listing and pictures did not do the property justice, Its a wonderful combination of a tradition historic building sympathetically restored with all modern facilities. It has stunning views over the harbour, town and Saronic Gulf.

The owners provided more than we expected ,including beach towels, bottled water, toiletries, plus a generous starter pack of tea, coffee, sugar etc. Too many other extras to mention.

Very effective aircon, hot water and showers, not always found in Greece! The apartment was spotless. The beds were very comfortable and the terraces, and gardens were much enjoyed.

The owner met us at the port with mules to carry our bags up to the property and was very friendly and helpful with information and advise en route. There are a number of ways to reach the Seagulls Nest, some longer but easier others shorter but much harder. You will be much fitter when you leave but the views and the property are worth every step. There is interest at every turn and the labyrinth of alleyways distracts you from the effort of the climb.

The four corners supermarket is a reasonably level 5 mims walk, passing Leonard Cohen's house on the way.

We can't recommend this property highly enough.

We are counting the days till we can return
