The Cottage at Sand's Edge - (completed remodeled) Oceanfront

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5-7)

When renting a beach house why settle for locations described as: minutes or blocks to the beach? The Cottage at Sand's Edge is BEACHFRONT (ten steps from the sand). Enjoy the ocean and beach views. Open the double wide french doors and let the cool ocean breeze waft in. At night, let the sounds of the ocean lull you to sleep. Enjoy a five minute drive to Capitola Village, walk to the Santa Cruz Harbor for cocktails and dinner in the sand or zip off to the Boardwalk for a day of fun with the kids....

(please note there is some construction going on next day and on the beach, no constuction is done on the weekends at either location - beach construction is expected to be done by May 2018)

Guestbook comments from the owner

Please read- there is NOT a hot tub at the cottage. In one of our reviews it states that there is, that was posted in error.

Thanks. Athena

Beach view cottage

  • 3 of 5

It was funky cute. Parking space is small. $18 a day for on street permit. The two steps at the front door were very steep, I needed help getting in. There are also steps on the small deck that goes back to the driveway and down on the patio. You are across from a very busy street to get to the beach. Gas fireplace pilot light was off. We figured it out and got it lit. There were five us so space was small, but we managed. Bbq is charcoal, but they had a bag to use. Bed was comfy. Enough kitchen ware for cooking.

The positives: great communication with owner...she will respond immediately to your questions or concerns, flexibility of owner, and location. You are right across the street from the beach. You can hear the waves from the bedroom when the window is open. The street out front is busy, but that can't be helped. Liked the hose outside to wash sand off my kids before getting them in the house. Liked having the washer and dryer so I didn't have to bring sandy, dirty clothes home.

The negatives: it was dirty. Things just weren't clean and tidy. Things left from previous guests (ponytail holder on top bunk with hair on it, champagne cork on chair), food on floor and cabinet, dirty pots, dirty floors, ants, stained pillows, stained blankets, and dust. Owner indicated that a different cleaning service was used before we came. Bathroom is small and there is no tub. This made bathing my 2 and 3 year olds difficult. I should have asked that before I booked but didn't think of it. Seems like that should be included in the description though. Description says there is a DVD player, so we brought our workout videos and workout clothes. Disappointed to find that there wasn't a DVD player. Very uncomfortable pull-out couch.

Overall, it was a fun trip, but wasn't exactly what I was expecting.

Great Location, great views of the ocean

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cottage! A perfect spot for a few days of relaxation. Location was great. Close to great food and a beautiful view of the ocean from the deck and from the living room. No need to go down to the beach when you can hear the waves crashing from your porch! I began each day with a coffee on the deck enjoying the ocean.

The property was clean and well equipped. The bunk bed room is very small, so consider this if you are planning this for larger teens and expect this as a get-a-way space for them. The street in front of the house was quite busy (no easy to cross at times during the busy day). We also enjoyed the fireplace in the front, as the beach fire rings tended to be "claimed" by evening for a fire. Parking for our car was convenient, however, parking for any guests (or a second car) might be difficult if they arrive after the public beach crowd starts to show up.

We recommend this cottage and would definitely look to rent it again when we make our next trip out to California!

Charming but noisy

  • 2 of 5

The house is tiny but charming. It has a kind of bed and breakfast vibe, not fancy. I would not plan to spend time relaxing in the house because it is so small but the location is great. The big problem is the constant TRAFFIC NOISE all day and night. The house is on a major thoroughfare and there are cars and noisy motorcycles going by at all times. We kept the windows closed and it did not seem appealing at all to sit outside. Even though we were beachfront, we could not hear the ocean over the traffic. It was nice to be able to walk to the beach but I regret paying a premium for this house being on the ocean since it was so noisy.

Not as portrayed but acceptable

  • 3 of 5

Property is across the street from a very nice beach, Twin Lakes, the view is 80% fantastic 20% a view of the beach bathroom facilities. The front patio/deck is pleasant and well appointed with a fire pit (Presto logs only), Weber BBQ, table and chairs. The table was missing a piece of the foot but that was remedied by placing a small rock under the leg. The interior is clean, beautifully decorated with homey touches and quality furniture. The master bedroom is small yet comfortable with a very comfortable bed, two nightstands, small closet and two mirrors. The second sleeping chamber is very small, I can't call it a room, my walk in closet at home is bigger. I would not recommend anyone over 5'5" sleep in the bunk beds in this room. Kids would love it! I was told by my travel partner that the fold out sofa bed was typical of that type of bed comfort wise. It took a bit to figure out the light switches. They are labeled but the labels seem to have no relation to the actual connection. The switch labeled "Inside" turned the fan on/off. The switch marked "fan" did not do anything that we could figure out. Thankfully the switch marked "outside" actually turned the outside lights on/off. The kitchen was well stocked with dishes a microwave, an apartment sized refrigerator and stove. The refrigerator's bottom door shelf was broken and rendered the shelf unusable. The bathroom is small, has a nice sized shower, a toilet that is set too close to the sink. overall the bathroom is adequate for a weekend up to a week. Parking spot is fine for a Toyota Camry sized vehicle anything bigger is a tight squeeze. Communication with the owner was pleasant and all correspondence was answered in a timely manner. Location is great, walking distance to the harbor and the Crows Nest Restaurant, several good restaurants are within a five to ten minute drive, boardwalk is 15 minutes away. The best thing about this place was the location, for the price I've been more satisfied elsewhere. I'd be hard pressed to recommend this place to friends or relatives due to the cost. In summery it was just OKI.
