Unbeatable location, tired house and very difficult owner

  • 2 of 5

We spent 6 weeks at this house. The location is absolutely top notch, and the house, if issues were to be addressed would be quite nice. The managers, Vicki and Ted, were very pleasant to deal with, but the owner Kris is very erratic and unpleasant.

Upon arriving we noticed that the house was overall quite dirty. There was a ton of expired food in the cabinets and refrigerator. It was also very cluttered with the owner's personal items filling many of the drawers and closets. We alerted Vicki to this and in response, Kris, the owner called me and assured me we were mistaken and the place was very clean. She offered to refund us in full, but what good would that do us as there were not other properties immediately available.

There is insufficient water pressure to use more than one faucet/shower/dishwasher at a time and a few of the drains are very slow. There were several open containers of Drain-o in the garage, so its clear that this was an ongoing issue.

Potential renters should also know that two of the bedrooms are tandem, meaning that one bedroom only has doors to the outside patio and another bedroom - so there is no bathroom access from one of the bedrooms without going through another bedroom.

On checkout, we walked through the property with Ted and all seemed OK. Upon enquiring about the return of our several thousand dollar security deposit a week after we left, we received a very long and agitated list of grievances from the Kris, the owner - several of which we have no idea when these issues occurred (a tear in a window shade for example). She then proceeded to not return our deposit until beyond the CA State deadline of 3 weeks and deducted several hundred dollars for 3-4 bricks at the edge of the driveway that were "damaged."

Overall, we made the best of the situation as its really in the perfect location. However, unless you can be assured that you will not have to interact with the owner I would suggest you consider other properties.

Great location, but a bit old and not very clean

  • 3 of 5

This house is in the BEST location if you wanted to spend time in La Jolla Shores. You are steps away from the grass area, beach, park, and shops/restaurants. There is ample parking for your cars. The managers were very nice and willing to help with any issues we had. But we were disappointed with the overall cleanliness of the house. The floors, counters, and bathrooms were not up to the standards I would expect for a rental home in this price range. The kitchen was difficult to navigate and the pots and other items were not clean overall. We had two crawling babies with us and they were covered in black filth after crawling around for a few minutes. The appliances were VERY old and the water pressure and water heater were an issue, also because of the age of the house. Sitting in the chairs and enjoying the view was our favorite part, but we wished the house was maintained much better than what we ended up with.

A very very special place!

  • 5 of 5

This house is a magical place we started coming to a few years ago and return as often as we can. We can’t recommend it enough. I really feel lucky that we found it. It has everything we hoped it would and more. Kris, the owner, is a wonderful person and you can tell has great pride in the house.

The house is right on the narrow spit of the park that sits then on the beach. It is the best of both worlds. You can play or have a picnic on the grass or the beach. The views from the house are AMAZING. Not just a sliver of the beach/ocean but a huge area, including down the coast because the house sits elevated above the park and street. We have watched dolphins and even seen whales spouting from the living room. Though I am not a surfer, I understand this is also a favorite spot for that too. Our kids love the ocean and there are areas on the beach with almost no surf that is designated for wading. The other thing we love about this place is the two car garage and a huge driveway. We had three families come over for a Saturday at the beach and all could park in the driveway instead of dealing with the hassle of street parking, which can be tough.

The photos don’t do it justice. The living and dining area are an airy white that adds to the warm comfortable classiness of this place. All the original wood floors, tiles in the bathrooms, fixtures and detail are so cool. You can tell when it was build in its day they didn’t spare expenses. This is not a tired beach houses. It is crisp, clean and very comfortable. There are two fireplaces that are great on cool nights. We also love the private garden patio off the master bedroom. It was also very handy have a washer/dryer and shower in the garage.

Can you tell we love this place!? It is fabulous!
