Home away from home
The house is very nice. It’s a home away from home. Very convenient and near the beach. Carol the owner is very sweet and welcoming. She’s very easy to reach whenever you need her. The place is clean and have a lot of bed. I will definitely book this house again when I come back to Hawaii.
Won't stay here again
We stayed at this Kailua rental in March 2018. We were excited to book a vacation in this part of beautiful Oahu but were extremely disappointed by our accommodations. The manager walked us through when we got there and explained that geckos would show up in the living room every night, told us how to deal with any cockroaches that we spotted in the house (use a shoe) and how to carefully open the dishwasher that had broken off of the cabinet bracket. There were at least three corners of the house with large amounts of gecko droppings, coffee grinds were molded in the coffee maker, there were ants running along the front of the living room, the cabinets were rotting, closet doors were hard to open as they were off their tracks and the carpets were stained. The manager asked us to let her know if we saw ants so we texted her when we did and she brought in a pest control person. They told us that we would see more ants before it got better and indeed we did- it did not solve the problem in the time that we were there. The welcome package for the home states that contact with rodents, insects or lizards or their droppings were not a reason to break the contact and that no money would be reimbursed for these reasons. We felt stuck as we couldn’t afford to go elsewhere after paying for flights and this rental. We didn’t feel comfortable eating much in the house so we bought paper bowls and had cereal for breakfast, spent as much time out of the house as possible, eating more fast food than we ever do and went out to buy coffee every morning. The manager was always responsive in a timely manner and pleasant to deal with, the location is in a quiet community and about a fifteen minute walk to one of the most amazing beaches we have ever been to but sadly the home was a poor experience for us. We love Kailua and hope to go back but will not stay at this home again.
From the comments left by this guest, it is obvious that they weren't aware that lizards and ants, etc. like Hawaii too. Everybody in Hawaii lives with these tropical creatures, especially those of us on the windward side (Kailua, Kaneohe, etc.), in an older home without whole-house air conditioning. The reason for the explanation about geckos, etc we gave them upon their arrival was so they wouldn't be surprised or scared or freak out. Unfortunately, that didn't work. What they referred to as large amounts of gecko poop are actually gecko-stained areas in the carpeting that won't come clean no matter how often they are shampooed. There was no actual gecko poop. Also, what was explained is that geckos are creatures of habit and come and go on a regular schedule -- same time, same place every night. They are good luck and eat the other unwelcome guests.
Regarding the ants - That's one of the reasons we have a pest control service. As the pest control guy explained and as I did, the organic ant killer he applied in the corners up along the ceiling would attract many of the ants (hundreds hopefully) and they would eat the application and then disappear back to their nests to kill the rest of the ants. We had a lot of rain while these guests were here and the ants and other creatures try to come inside to escape their homes being flooded. It's called nature. Other than having regular pest control service there is little else we can do. And our pest control service is listed as the best in a top 10 list of pest control services on Oahu. Consider why there are so many pest control companies here.
Why there were coffee grounds in the coffee pot, I have no idea since our cleaning people thoroughly cleaned the house and appliances immediately before their arrival.
Why they felt they could not eat in the house is beyond us. Ants crawling on a trail along a ceiling and geckos that hang out in one or two places -- usually where they might find some ants to eat, do not endanger the kitchen or dining room surfaces or appliances, etc. I wish we could have assured this family that there was no danger to them, and no contamination of their food. But we were not given the opportunity to make them feel more comfortable until they contacted us about the ants 4 days before they departed. We are truly sorry about that & wish them aloha. Our advice for next time is to stay in a brand new home with whole-house A/C and no green plants or trees or shrubs close to the house.
great family house in quiet Kailua neighborhood
Seven family members visited Oahu for our daughter's college graduation. We were all comfortable in this spacious, classic house in a quiet Kailua neighborhood. It had everything we needed (towels, sheets, beach mats, parking) and we could prepare meals here for our large group. Very conveniently located - easy to get ot Kailua Town, Honolulu, North Shore...
Very spacious one-level
My family and I enjoyed our stay at Ke Ohana Hale. We had enough beds for my family of seven plus my mother. The kitchen was well equipped and the temperature was comfortable the whole time we were there. We never had to turn on the air conditioners, though it was nice to know they were there. We loved using the beach toys and boogie boards and Carol was an excellent hostess.
Very Nice, good for Family
I really enjoyed staying at the Kailua House. It was roomy and very comfortable. If you have a family and kids, this is the place you want to stay. It had plenty of room and beds for our whole family. 4 grandparents, 2 kids, and 2 parents. If you know Hawaii, then you know that most houses don't have AC, which this one did have 2 window units. They were not really needed that much, as the ocean breeze was plenty to keep the place cool. We were a short 10-15 min walk from the beach. This beach was almost like a private beach, as there were not many people there. Unlike the north shore beaches, or those of Waikiki. If you're looking for a home away from home, this is the place for you.
This is our second time at this home.
The new addition of air conditioning was much appreciated. Everything was great.
