About the property

Affordable, cozy little house, for self-catering travelers

At Casas La Selvatica we offer an unforgettable rainforest immersion experience. Beyond comfortable accommodation, you will experience the sounds, scents and sights of the jungle with its amazing flora and fauna. Better yet, you will be only minutes away from a picture perfect beach, grocery store and restaurants. The setting is ideal for couples or families who appreciate the comfort of an entire home rather than a hotel room, and the cultural experience of living in an actual local neighbourhood, surrounded by locals. Our homes are available for vacation rental for a maximum of 14 days.

Casa Mango is located in Playa Chiquita (6km/4miles South of Puerto Viejo) within easy reach of countless recreational activities (zip-line jungle tours, chocolate tours, sea based activities: snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, kayaking), tours of the indigenous communities, yoga studios, and many more.

Please read all the information on this page and ensure that you are comfortable with the description of the house, surroundings and the specifics of the area (rain forest environment), prior to making a reservation request.

Our property and the surrounding area are home to an incredible array of wildlife: you will most likely watch howler monkeys in their search for food, toucans or sloths right from the comfort of the patio. The home is located minutes away from a couple of the most picturesque palm fringed beaches in the Caribbean. Your host will be available to assist with information about the area, bookings for activities/tours and offer detailed attention to your comfort throughout your vacation.

Casa Mango is a small, self contained one bedroom house, featuring a bedroom with double bed, ceiling fan and walk-in closet; a bathroom with shower; a kitchen with full size stove, refrigerator and basic kitchenware, and an outdoor living area with a dining table, bench and of course, two hammocks! The house offers basic accommodation, and it is intended for budget travellers who seek an affordable and clean place to call home during their vacation. The house can only accommodate a single adult or a couple; is is not intended for families (due to insufficient space). Should you find that the comfort of a larger home would more accurately reflect your idea of a comfortable vacation, please consider our other home located on the same property: Casa Grande: HomeAway listing#348953

If you seek serenity, while enjoying the convenience of a picture perfect beach (6 min walk away) and services within a few minutes walk, this might be the place for you. Within a few minutes walk you will find: a well stocked grocery/general store (you will find most basic necessities here), a few restaurants, a couple of yoga studios and a bus stop with direct service to San Jose, Limon, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo.

Along with the accommodation, the following services are available on-site:

- UPGRADED, reliable WiFi internet service;

- on-site caretaker, available for assistance and information as needed

- laundry service ($5/load - wash, dry and fold).

- rental bikes are available at nearby grocery store (3 min walk away).

Detailed transportation information can be found under the "Map" tab. Please take the time to review the "house rules" (a standard rental agreement) which will be presented to you when you submit a reservation request (you will be asked to read and agree prior to your payment being processed). All payments are handled by the secure online payment system provided by HomeAway. By submitting a reservation request, you acknowledge that you reviewed all the information presented on this site and all your questions were answered to your satisfaction.

About Daniel or Jeff Mitroi Carlton

Our journey south was meant to be a temporary escape from the dark and rainy Canadian West Coast, in search of sunshine and warmth. After a brief search for a potential destination and keeping in mind that we desired nothing of an all inclusive resort, we quickly realized that one can have it all... in Costa Rica (Rich Coast)! As so many times before, we chose the off-beaten path...the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica was awaiting to be discovered! What a great surprise: not only did we get some rays and experienced the vibrant culture, but it all came with the most spectacular backdrop. The surroundings were magical! Lush green rain-forest filled with beautiful flowers, and wildlife otherwise only known to us from colourful atlases. There was a positive energy which we just could not get away from. After this first impression, a spark led to a dream and the dream became a plan...With the much appreciated help and support from our friends and families our new journey started at the end of 2009. Come join us and enjoy pure living...

Daniel or Jeff Mitroi Carlton purchased this house in 2009

Why Daniel or Jeff Mitroi Carlton chose Cahuita

Dear travelers,

We visited the Southern Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica for the first time just in 2009. Even before our vacation ended, we knew that we had just found a special place which would become our home one day. After relentlessly working on finding our dream home, we stumbled upon La Selvatica and literally fell in love at first sight. We are excited to share our home with you, open minded fellow travelers, and are convinced that you will soon discover your own reasons to love this place, and the reasons it was called 'The Coast of Utopia' by reputable travel journals. Happy travels!

Daniel & Jeff Carlton Mitroi

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the lovely stay at casa Mango. The house is simple, but we had everything that we needed. The weather was beautiful and we really enjoyed Playa Chiquita. Unfortunately we didn't see any sloths or monkeys near the house but we did see some beautiful birds and iguanas. The communication through whatsapp worked perfectly fine. Pura Vida!

The area is enjoyed by independent travellers and it is better suited to travellers not adverse to being in occasional and relative close proximity with geckos, spiders, humming birds, agoutis, bats or any other creatures which inhabit the nearby rainforest. This is NOT a bug free zone.

Decent house, howler monkeys, not near beach

  • 2 of 5

I found it a little out of the way, and more importantly, the owners misled me about the proximity of a beach wherein swimming was available. I enjoy swimming in the ocean, and was looking for a place to stay that was walking distance to a beach that was swimmable.

While it only takes 5 - 10 minutes to get to a beach from the house, that beach and nearby beaches are rocky and there are warnings all up and down about the dangerous undertow and rip tides.

I found, some 5 kilometers away, a calm, clear, non-rocky place to swim - just north of the Puerto Viejo town. Definitely not walking distance.

Other issues include the presence of howler monkeys, who spent each night howling their butts off - a weird, creepy sound that kept me awake all night, both nights. I was on vacation so I could catch up on my sleep during the day, but the proprietors should have warned me that the house was under siege every night.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of your 2 days stay at Casa Mango. We apologize for the discomfort created by the presence of the howler monkeys in the immediate vicinity, but are so happy that they are still coming by every now and then! As always, we invite all prospective travellers to thoroughly research all publicly available information in order to ascertain whether a destination they consider for their holidays is a match to their interests and lifestyle. We also welcome any specific questions and will provide links to aid with the trip planning research.

pas très propre :(

  • 1 of 5

House needs improvements

  • 3 of 5

It was ok. The house need some improvements tho... mostly in the bathroom. Location is good because is just minutes from every other beach, the one that is across the street is full is reef... dead one so you can't really get in unless your wearing water shoes.

Owner's Response: Thank you Hilary for your comments! We only wish you would have been more specific, as we are committed to improve our services in order to meet our guests' needs. The bathroom has a functional hot shower, flush toilet, sink and mirror. At the time of your arrival, basic toiletries, toilet paper and good quality towels were provided, as this is standard for all our guests. If anything was needed in addition to this, we would have been happy to provide. We encourage our guests to communicate to us (by email) or to Daniel, the host, during his daily checking in with the guests anything that could make their stay better. Regarding Playa Chiquita beach: it has been often described as "uncrowded Playa Chiquita is a favourite for those who want to relax on the fine sand and in the beautiful waters surrounded only by nature. It is really several small bays so you may be able to find your own small beach with no one else in sight" by media outlets (BBC Travel, NY Times etc.), travel magazines (Travel and Leisure) and independent sites (Puerto Viejo Satellite). There are definitely coral bays (which provide shelter from high waves), surrounded by areas incredibly with fine sand. There is something for everyone - one simply needs to walk around and find his/her perfect spot! As always, we strongly encourage any future travellers to ask for details about our services during the pre-booking communication, as well as do their own research about the areas they are about to discover. Sincerely, Daniel & Jeff

Great deal for budget travelers!

  • 4 of 5

Great location, casa mango has all you need amenity wise. Near a well stocked grocery store that has affordable bikes for rent. Overall my stay here was great! It's too bad there is not more seating on the front patio though. The bench in the pictures isn't there anymore and the chairs aren't that comfy, so my boyfriend and I switched off taking turns in the hammock. It also would have been nice to have an extra fan in the bedroom because it can get very hot in the back of the house! However at such a cheap price those faults are just part of the experience. The owners are very quick in response to any emails you send, which is great. On a side note, Internet doesn't work very well unless you move closer to the router in the back of the house near the other cabin. As we only needed Internet to plan the next stop on our vacation this wasn't too much of a hassle. And Dani, our host, was the best! Very helpful with knowledge of the area, and we felt super welcomed by him, and not afraid to reach out to him at any point during our stay with questions. Casa Mango was a great find!

The owners were very prompt with their replies to our inquiries and the property managers were very helpful. This had been our fourth stop in Costa Rica and the only stop on the East Coast. Read the letter that is left in your place because there is some great information about walking to the best beach in that area.

Does feel like you are in the centre of a jungle at times! We had our own transportation but everyone rides bicycles and the terrain is flat and great for that. The gourmet store at the main road is also great, with some items at a better price than others. We were not night people, but without TV it was a little lonely, but we met our neighbours and that made our holiday. They had everything we needed, even a kettle! Enjoy!

Very nice place

  • 5 of 5

If your looking for a more wild experience away from a 5 star hotel, this is a great place to stay. It,s location to the incredible beaches where the forest comes right out and clear blue water is great. Rodrigo the property manager was very helpful and friendly giving us tips of what to do and see. The owners were also very helpful through email when I was delayed they helped with a hotel in san jose. Highly recommend this place for the adventurous types who enjoy nature.

Nearest Airport
130 Miles
San Jose (SJO)
Nearest Beach
0.3 Miles
Playa Chiquita
Car: not necessary

If you plan to arrive at La Selvatica on the day of your flight you will have to chose a flight landing in San Jose no later than 2pm. Similarly, if you plan to depart La Selvatica on the day of your flight, your flight should depart San Jose at 2pm or later.

Air travel: Upon landing in San Jose, you can continue on a Nature Air or Sansa direct flights to Limon (30 min). In Limon, you can take an airport shuttle which will drop you off directly at La Selvatica approx. 1 hour later. Both airlines offer fares as low as $39/one way.

Airport shuttles: A few reputable transport providers offer daily departures in air conditioned minivans, directly from the airport, and operate in door-to-door service, so will drop you off directly at La Selvatica. Average cost is $50/person (one way). For updated schedule, rates and to reserve please google Interbus, Easy Ride, Gecko Trail or Caribe Shuttle websites.

Budget minded travellers can catch one of the frequent direct city buses right outside the airport going downtown San Jose (buses run 24/7). The trip cost approx. $1 (450 colones - local currency) and takes approximately 25 minutes. Get off at the terminus stop. The bus is safe and reliable. When off the bus, catch a taxi and ask the driver to take you to Terminal de Buses de San Carlos. The taxi ride will take approx. 10 min and cost $4 (2200 colones, metered). If you prefer to take a taxi from the airport to the San Carlos bus terminal: taxis are readily available outside the terminal. Note that there are two types of taxis: orange (licensed for airport, available as you exit the terminal and more expensive) and red (licensed for the city, available on the road just behind the airport parking lot and less expensive). The cost of a trip downtown is approx. $22 (red) or $32 (orange) and takes approx. 25 minutes. You will also see numerous other drivers offering their services. This could be a money saving option if you speak some Spanish and are willing to bargain heavily.

Buses: there is one direct daily bus from downtown San Jose to Playa Chiquita, and four daily buses to Puerto Viejo, where you can catch a taxi to La Selvatica. The direct bus leaves Terminal de Buses de San Carlos at 12 noon and drops you off 2 minutes walk from Casas La Selvatica, in front of El Duende Grourmet Grocery Store, after a 4.5 hour scenic ride through cloud forests and a picturesque stretch of the Caribbean Coast. This trip from San Jose to Playa Chiquita costs approx.$11. Buses to Puerto Viejo leave the same bus terminal at 6am, 10am, 2pm and 4pm. Upon arrival in Puerto Viejo, you will see taxis waiting right at the bus stop. Ask the driver to take to La Selvatica Playa Chiquita. The taxi will cost approximately 4000 colones ($7.5) - always confirm the price with the driver before departure. Buses tickets cannot be reserved in advance online, but can be purchased from the ticket office at the bus terminal. For departures on weekends or busy holidays, it is recommended to arrive at the bus terminal 1 hour prior to your bus departure to ensure you will be able to reserve your seat.

Private transfer from airport to La Selvatica could be arranged. A minivan of up to 8 people cost approx. 200 USD. Generally, this option is the most expensive was to travel, but could be cost-effective for a family or group travel.

Car rental: 7 global car rental companies have offices at the airport in San Jose. For an updated list of options, please visit the SJO airport website.

River Rafting: our collaborator Exploradores Outdoors offers an adrenaline filled rafting trip from San Jose directly to La Selvatica. There is one daily departure at 6am (you would have to spend the night in San Jose). The tour operator will pick you up at your hotel, drive to a river exploration center where you will embark on a 4 hour descent on Pacuare River. You will then be driven directly to La Selvatica. Lunch is provided and your luggage is safely driven while you are on the raft. The trip can be booked directly on the tour operator website for $99/pers or through us for $90/pers.

Driving directions (approx.4.5 hrs): from San Jose follow signs for road 32 to Limon. In Limon, follow signs for road 36 to Puerto Viejo. Once you reach Puerto Viejo, stay on the same road which goes through town, and continue to drive toward Manzanillo. Playa Chiquita is approx. 4 miles (10 min drive) after you exit Puerto Viejo (you will first drive through Cocles, then Playa Chiquita is next). Keep an eye out on your right hand side for El Duende Gourmet grocery store, then take the very first road to the right (small gravel road, you will see our sign there). Keep right on that road for 20 seconds and you will see our entrance.

If your rented car has a GPS, the approximate location for Puerto Viejo is:

latitude: 9.637614227510818

longitude: -82.71361827850342
