Why Rebecca Parsons chose Damariscotta
I have been here since my first summer long ago. It has been a wonderful place to grow up swimming, boating, playing. The walk to the village is an easy walk - 1.5 miles.
What makes this Cabin unique
This is a nice little stroll around the point and children will enjoy this by bicycle.

Not up to VRBO standards
When we arrived for a two week stay, we were curious whether the owner was expecting us - the grass was very high, the border garden was overrun with weeds, a bag of Moo Doo (manure) was leaned up against the house, the deck furniture was covered with leaves and other debris. The inside of the house is not very clean - the dishes are all on open shelves, so we washed any that we used (don't bother looking in the cupboards!)
The yard is littered and bordered with cast-off broken lawn furniture, piles of old lumber, two old 50 gal. propane tanks (just off the lawn), old stove pipe; overgrown lobster trap, and more. A folding lawn chair down on the dock has a large hole in the seat and is filthy. The hammock is riddled with tears. All of this made sitting on the deck to enjoy the view of the river not that much fun. The deck railing needs to be replaced - the top rail is broken, rough and beyond repair. Any small child or animal can fall through the railing and down the 10 feet to the ground (our dog did just that). A couple of the deck chairs are broken. Inside, the couch has a make-shift throw to cover the torn & dirty cushions, and is very uncomfortable. The first floor bath faucet is badly corroded and cracked. The living room drapes cover the baseboard heater (fire hazard!); the switch for the upstairs bathroom light is faulty (another fire hazard).
Probably the worst issue is the smell from the basement, which is very damp and musty (and wet when it rains) - the laundry is down there, our only excuse for going down there, except to get the vacuum (we were expected to vacuum before we left!). The basement is full of old cast-off junk. The door to the basement doesn't stay closed, so the musty smell is a constant.
The owner's husband uses the garage on a daily basis and leaves "stuff" (tools, batteries, old metal parts, broken chair, machinery...) around the outside of the garage all the time. The garage is not part of the rental, but we had to look at all of this when entering or leaving the house. He used the cottage's garden hose to clean his boat while we were there, then proceeded to leave the boat parked in the yard for the winter.
We don't expect to rent a home filled with another person's cast-off junk. This place could benefit from filling a large dumpster. We suggest that VRBO not continue offering this cabin, and we really do not understand the 5-star ratings from others. This place should not be rented to anyone.
Hello Suzanne & Ellen -Needless to say I am shocked at your review and unfortunately feel it necessary to respond to some of your incorrect allegations.
The very first thing you see when you walk in on the counter with the key is a welcome folder with instructions and information. In the 2nd paragraph it states: "We ask all guests to go through the home and report any dissatisfaction within the first 24 hours to us." You were here 2 weeks and never a word even when either Richard or I talked with you on several occasions. Shame, shame because if I had a clue you were so dissatisfied I would have gladly made arrangements with you to leave.
I will touch upon issues you raised in which I feel you are incorrect. The first time I met you Suzanne your first question was when was the lawn going to be mowed, although not high as you state. I told you that as soon as the very very high temperatures and oppressive humidity passed the lawn would be mowed and it was very shortly thereafter. I also told you that myself or anyone I hired I would not allow to mow in the weather conditions we were having due to health concerns. This extreme weather leads to the condensation and mustiness of the basement and the basement door locks and was not unlocked when you arrived. You are not expected to vacuum and no where does it state such. As to the dog, deck, railings - all is up to code and the responsibility of the renter to look after their pets and children while on the deck or dock. The couch is not dirty and there is not a make-shift throw to cover anything. I have 3 couch covers especially to change after each tenant w/a pet leaves and to downplay the flowery pattern. The curtains are summer curtains and the winter drapes to not hang over the register and if one uses the light switches in the upstairs bedrooms correctly there is not problem; thus neither of these are fire hazards.
In closing I will say that I have 5 parties who return year after year staying anywhere from a week to a month and I am sure if your complaints were truthful they would not be returning year after year - or the 5 star ratings. As it appears you have been renting through HomeAway for a while, I am sure this is not your first negative review.
Enjoy your Fall. Rebecca
A wonderfully relaxing, welcoming, life-affirming spot!
A week was not enough.
A very comfortable and quiet cottage
We came to Damariscotta to have some quiet down time and explore the Maine mid-coast. The cottage was perfect for our trip. Our hosts, Rebecca and Rick, are fantastic folks. We felt very welcome and our hosts were not at all intrusive, but offered information and helpful suggestions for our stay. We were able to bring our dog and she enjoyed the stay as much as we did - although the Chipmunks did tease her a bit :).
Having the kayaks available was great and I suggest taking the time to explore the river. Damariscotta has everything you need close by and is a nice central point to go for day trips to many fun areas. The back deck of the cabin is a good place to sit and relax, read, watch the river flow by or enjoy your coffee or a frosty beverage.
Another perk - the washer/dryer in the basement!
Log cabin getaway
Another wonderful vacation in the charming log cabin! And with the apartment over the garage, it becomes the perfect spot for multigenerational families. Who can beat sun, salt water, kayaking, seafood, and soaring eagles! Thanks again, Rebecca and Richard!
This was our favorite vacation rental!
The property was absolutely wonderful. We so enjoyed the full month in Damariscotta and surrounding mid coast towns. Damariscotta was the perfect hub for our numerous day trips to the close-by villages too numerous to list, but favorites were Rockland, Camden, Bath and Boothbay Harbor. Within 30 minutes you can hit so many wonderful adventures. And the town of Damariscotta is a great vacation in itself with wonderful restaurants and fun things to do. The home was just perfect for the two of us and our dog. We often cooked at home (lobster and oysters time after time) and the kitchen had everything you could think of to get the job done. Wi-Fi, Cable, Washer and Dryer, Kayaks and the prettiest sunsets you will ever see with a deck looking over the Damariscotta River... We hope to be back soon!
My wife and I enjoyed our 2 week stay very much.
We found the cabin to be clean, very well furnished, and comfortable for the two of us and our small dog. The view of the river and rock bound shore were spectacular - the sunsets an added attraction! The owner was always available if needed. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to a friend and hope to be back next year. The location of the cabin being close to downtown Damariscotta yet within 20 minutes of the Maine coastal spots of Pemaquid and Boothbay Harbor as well as Damariscotta Lake was special; Pemaquid State Park for swimming was a jewel!
There is much to do with the farmers' markets, theater (movies and live), restaurants, cafes, book store, antique shops and festivals.
