Location superb

  • 4 of 5

This is definitely a respite from the more crowded beach area. The view of the docs and the Marsh with the kayakers and boaters is breathtaking. A 10 minute walk up second Street leads you to the beach and two different choices for public beach access. you're still near the pier and can walk there in a few minutes. All the bars and restaurants are walkable but we ended up doing a golf cart for $50 a day for an aging grandparent. There's a cute local store for odds and ends but a 10 minute drive for Super Walmart.

House is nice inside and everything seemed clean ( kitchen drawers and cabinets could use a little TLC) I would've preferred some basic cleaning supplies and a broom so we could keep the floor clean during our stay as the vacuum isnt great. I'm not a fan of pillows on a couch that I know they can't wash but that's just me. There are two beautiful decks that should be finished soon and will be a cherry on top of this house.

The pool is just steps away and has an equally beautiful view of the marsh, bathrooms and plenty of chairs.

Owner's Response: Thank you Colleen for your comments and suggestions. I will remind the cleaning crew to make sure that the unit has some basic cleaning supplies and a broom available for the renters. The balconies are finished finally and look great. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay.

Hostile Property Manager and Construction Site Makes This a Very Awkward Stay

  • 1 of 5

Folly Beach is a great place to visit and this property has a great location. However, we had problems with the property, made worse by the reaction from the property manager. Reading through other reviews, Melissa's hostile and irrational behavior in response to problems seems to be a pattern.

4 weeks before our stay we were told the back deck was under construction and unusable but that views would not be obstructed. Our stay was for Easter weekend so there were no other remaining properties available for rent. We were also told that we would not receive a discount because this had already been applied when we booked. However, this was not shared at the time of booking or we would have chosen a different property. When we arrived there were construction workers actively working on the deck (also not something that was shared). This is a particular problem because they are working on a deck outside the living room and master bedroom, rooms with floor to ceiling glass doors and windows without window treatments. So you are staring at 3 construction workers 2 feet away from you while trying to enjoy a vacation. Not to mention all of the hammering, drilling and 8AM arrival. I reached out to the Melissa to ask about their schedule and find a solution. Over text Melissa insisted there was nothing she could do and she felt we had been given all of the information in advance. I tried to find a compromise on the scheduled days or arrival times. She stopped responding to text. Hours later she arrived unannounced at the front door. She immediately began yelling at me. Several times she had to turn her back on me to face the wall and take deep breaths. The calmer I stayed, the more upset she became. She not only explained that this was my fault for somehow not knowing to ask more questions, but that I should be grateful for the still '$1MM' view that we had despite the ladders, extension cords and three large men outside our windows. She spiraled, complaining about other guests that had raised issues with her and how this was out of her control. I asked to speak to someone else but she denied me. She suggested we leave, but as I noted this would have left us homeless for the weekend. Eventually I wrapped it up, saying this wasn't productive. I then learned that she owns the unit next door, undergoing the same construction making it hard to believe this was out of her control. Additionally, the dock is also a construction zone and there is not a grill.

Owner's Response: Again, I apologize that Maury was so dissatisfied. She asked for an early check in and I granted it for free. I did explain that by arriving early there would be construction. In checking in early, she was there while the construction was going on. Had I not granted this request, the workers would have been gone before her check in. Maury asked repeatedly for 1/2 off prior to ever arriving and then immediately upon arriving. I explained in advance that the unit was already discounted. Since March (when the construction began) I have had consistent renters. All have been given the same information in advance. Please read the reviews, all were satisfied, happy even. Maury was seeking money back and nothing I did or said would appease her. She was informed of the deck restrictions as soon as I became aware. She was offered a full refund if she was not interested in the property. I do not own the property or the one next door, I manage them for the owner (he owns both.) I do own a property in the neighborhood across the creek. The construction was a direct result of a storm and damage that needed to be repaired. Neither of these events are in my control. I do not hire the contractors or manage the construction, only the rentals. The construction is almost complete. I did not arrive unannounced, she called and asked me to resolve the workers being there during her early check in. I came to the unit to discuss with the construction team their hours, and they did agree to leave early to try to assuage her concerns. The dock is not under construction. A sailboat crashed into the dock. She is referencing it's removal (beyond my control.) It is now fixed. I did not yell at anyone. I have a reliable record of accommodating my guests above and beyond their expectations. I left and told her I would do anything in my power to make her stay more comfortable, but giving her money back was not an option. She then threatened she would write this review. Maury had full use of the house and amenities (except back decks) which I explained in advance. It is my goal, in every rental to meet any needs the renter might have while staying. I asked if I could do anything to please her, and she replied that nothing less than $500 would appease her. I could not honor that. I did explain to her that Folly is a happy, relaxed place and that this type of dissatisfaction was uncommon, and I felt helpless to remedy it. For that I am distinctly sorry.

Great Experience

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Healing Hideaway. My family of 4 and in-laws had plenty of room. Every thing is right around the corner. From restaurants, grocery stores and the beach. My daughter was able to paddle board and canoe in the Folly River while my son and father-in-law fished and crabbed. The best part was my wife and I were able to watch it all from the screened porch with a great breeze and ceiling fan. Melissa, who manages the property lives next door and was very helpful. The only possible negative is parking for this end unit can be a pain. I highly recommend Healing Hideaway.
