A Christmas Disaster!

  • 3 of 5

We booked the cabin with a dream of spending Christmas and New year away from towns and people waking up to peace and quiet while spending evenings relaxing, popping outside every now and then to see if the Northern Lights were visible.

We met Luffi in Reykjavik to collect the keys, did our shopping and then headed off on our 90 minute drive to the cabin. We drove along the gravel highways up to the cabins and then the problems began. The road to the cabins was not clear of snow and there was no way we could get up there in our 4x4. We tried to walk the last 400m to the cabin but even that was impossible as the snow got deeper and deeper. We turned around and got an apartment for the evening in Selfoss. The following day Luffi bravely drove from Reykjavik in a terrible snow storm by which time the snow was deeper and deeper and could not be cleared. We stayed back in Selfoss for a few nights but decided that we had no option other than to fly home early. Our emergency accommodation was taking all the spare money we brought with us for fuel and food. I am sure the cabin would be amazing if we could ever have reached it. We were so close! I cannot thank Luffi enough for trying so hard to help us get to the cabin but the weather beat us all! When renting this cabin in winter you must be aware that the highways are cleared by snowplough but the last 400m from the highway to the cabins do not seem to have any form of snow clearing procedures in place. This was also a problem for a previous guest who did eventually did get to the cabin.

Owner's Response: Christmas in Iceland 2016 09.01.2017 We are very sorry for what these very nice people went trough and that they missed Cristmas. This is the second time that people had problem getting to the house. Last year it was only one day that it was to much snow and this time it was tree days. We have rented our houses for four years, all year round and these are the only problem we had. Usually the snow is removed by snow plow but at Christmas and New Year day they don´t. I also missed the Christmas day trying to help the people to get to the house but that is not an issue for me. We never know how much snow will be at this time and it has been very little snow over the last years, and we can not control the weather yet, but when we do, we will inform you all.

Lovely cabin

  • 5 of 5

Luffi and Anna are absolutely fantastic!! My partner and I arrived during an extreme weather warning with heaps of snow and strong winds, so the conditions were bad. We rented a small 4x4 (you wouldn't want anything less) and drove from the airport to the cabin after picking up the keys from the owners. With the weather being bad we drove very slowly and most signs were covered with snow which made navigating somewhat of a challenge. As we drove up the driveway our car got thoroughly stuck in knee deep snow, about 100meters away from the hut. We tried to dig out the car but it was impossible! So we texted Luffi for help - especially as we booked to go to the blue lagoon early the next day.

It was about 9pm when Luffi and Anna arrived in their truck; they had driven for about an hour and a half just to come and rescue us! It was brilliant, they were so kind!

After getting the car stuck/rescued we made sure to park it at the far end of the driveway so we didn't have any further problems. The roads to the cottage were icy on the first few days but by the end of our stay they were clear and easily passable. The weather was really unusual though, and it didn't detract from the enjoyment of our stay.

The cottage itself was lovely and warm and the kitchen was new and nicely presented. We didn't have any problems with the cabin, it was clean, cosy and had everything we needed. We spent most of our time during the day driving to different attractions and it was great to come back to somewhere warm and quiet.

We had a great adventure and the owners are excellent, they went above and beyond to take care of us. Would go back again.

Nice spot, but with a few downsides

  • 3 of 5

We, a young couple with our baby, found the quiet cottage in a good but not completely clean condition, as there were dust and dirt below the bed and lot of hair on the sofa. The equipment in the house was satisfying. We've found everything we needed. However, although we stated that we were arriving with our baby, the owner was not able to provide a baby cot (the only accommodation in Iceland on our trip which didn't do that) and did not prepare linen and towel for her.

Since it was quite cold the days we were there, we needed the heating, but although we incremented the temperature on the device, and although it ran and ran, it didn't really get warmer inside. Hence, we heated with the oven, which we know is really not recommended.

Furthermore, due to an unfortunate situation of the owner, he was not able to meet us in person to provide the keys. Hence, we had to pay the rent per bank transfer instead of handing it over in cash. But although it was not our fault, he wanted us to add a small fee for bank transfer, which btw he already claimed for paying the deposit. This fee was not stated in the conditions on the internet site!

Last but not least, the cleaning is optional. You may do it yourself, which we found a good solution. However, this allows the chance of getting a dirty sofa on arrival... If you like to include the cleaning, be aware that the conditions are contradictory. The internet offer shows a different (smaller) cleaning fee than in the document provided by the owner. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to tell you the exact amounts due to the review guidelines of HomeAway.

Altogether, this cottage offers the opportunity for a very nice and quiet Iceland holiday, but it would be better to know all these little drawbacks in advance.

Owner's Response: When a customer have something to complaine about, it is nessaserry to inform the owner so he can fix it. These customer of mine never contacted me while they where here, so it was impossible for me to know of any problem. It took me 10 minutes to fix the heating system.

Great house =)

  • 5 of 5

Very nice house. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The road to the house is a little adventure, but our small Toyota Yaris managed the gravel road every day ;).

In the area are lots of things to do (hiking, fishing, horses, beautiful landscapes...).

We had a wonderful time there!
