Beautiful location! Wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

Wow. We loved our stay at this cottage. It's off of a dirt road in between two small towns. The ocean is across the road. We actually saw a Minkie Whale from the front porch, with binoculars. The sunsets are spectacular. The host Germaine, was wonderful. We drove the Cabot Trail, went whale watching, hiked the Skyline Trail, and watched fishermen unload snow crab in Grand Etang. What a wonderful experience!

A Lovely Home in a Beautiful Spot

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights in this lovely home. First impression was the view from the front porch and the sunset every evening. Inside were four comfortable bedrooms which were very clean. Two bathrooms and a nice size living area. The kitchen had everything you might need for meal prep, however, we only ate breakfast in. Germaine, who manages the property visited us one evening and was full of information about the area. But, what most impressed us was how warm and friendly she was. We found that with all the people we encountered on Cape Breton.

This property is well cared for and a delight to stay in.

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at this wonderful home. Booking was seamless- info provided by the owner was timely and very useful. Germaine - the local contact - was a pure joy to meet and made us feel at home and was a phone call away for any questions or concerns. The home is spacious and was very clean with all amenities. Home is well cared for both inside and out. What a view! Spectacular sunsets, watching the lobster boats drop their lobster pots, the eagle we saw fly by numerous times, the green mountain in the backyard - loved every minute! Loved our walks down to the beach - the rocky shore is beautiful. Right on the Cabot Trail and the Natuional Park was beautiful. (Make sure you do the Skyline hike). Hope to get back there again....

Awesome view. Cute house with everything. Lots of room.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this house. It was clean and had everything you could want. Great for families. Beautiful area and people. We loved meeting Germaine who is the wife of Russell's cousin. She maintains the property and will check in you. She is a special lady. You'll love this rental. Would definitely come again.

This place is amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in a lot of rental homes in a lot of countries and this one is our favorite. The location is perfect -- you feel remote with a 180-degree view of the ocean with no other sign of human life, yet the local market is a 3-min drive away. (Or you could walk there and forage your own oysters and mussels along the way.) You're 5 min to Cheticamp and 15 min the Highlands park Cheticamp entrance. We hiked nearly every day in the park, bought local fish on the way home, and returned to make it for dinner in the well-stocked kitchen. On our one stormy day (which was amazing to watch from inside the cozy living room), the kids played hours of table tennis downstairs in the basement which is like its own little apartment with kitchen, new shower, and bedroom. We didn't need to sleep down there though because upstairs has three bedrooms and a bath -- just right for our family of 4. The kids also loved the big grassy yard where they could play soccer, fly their kite and play catch with our dog (who was in heaven -- she never gets this much space to run!) while the grownups could watch the sunset from the rocking chairs on the front porch. We also walked down to the water's edge where we collected rocks and drift wood and across the road to the two lakes where my son attempted to catch fish. (We got worms for a $2 donation in a shack behind the Dollar Store in case you're looking!) On a practical level, the house has everything you could ever need -- an abundance of towels, blankets, pots and pans, you name it; even a food processor! -- it's very clear that this was someone's home, not a property just to rent out. It's truly a special place. Definitely worth the 16 hour drive to get here from NY!

Beautiful Views. Perfect Location For Exploring Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed here for two nights and loved it. House sits right across from the ocean. Stunning sunsets. Beach access is right up road. Home is very comfortable. Has all the amenities you need for your stay. Enjoy views from the porch or living room. We enjoyed nightly ping-pong tournaments in the finished basement. Peaceful and quiet. Entrance to Cape Breton Park - and arguably the most scenic section of the Cabot Trail - just 10 minutes away. Good selection of restaurants and co-op a few minutes away. Perfect home for families.

Nearby stops - Mr. Chicken soft serve ice cream is delicious.

Located on the ocean with the mountains to our back. In a small fishing village and within walking distance to 2 lakes. It is a short drive to the national park (rated by National Geographic as the #1 island in North America) we own 200 hundred private acres nearby to hike. Great ATV trails.• The Cape Breton Highlands National Park is located just 15 minutes away from the house. It is just beyond Cheticamp as you travel the Cabot Trail. There are so many great hikes. A few of our favorites are the Skyline & the hike down to Fishing Cove. There are some great short ones, too - such as The Bog, and Lone Sheiling. They have maps of all the hikes at the Visitor Center

• Gampo Abbey, a Buddhist monastery in the Shambhala tradition, is not too far. Pema Chodron is the principle teacher there. It is located in Pleasant Bay, which is a town in the middle of the National Park. It takes about 45-60 minutes to get there from the house. There may or may not be tours going on (I believe they end at the end of August), but you can walk all around the grounds & visit the Stupa. There are some fun hikes on the property, the view is amazing, and in general it is just a pretty amazing place

• There are some great restaurants/cafes in the area. The All Aboard Restaurant and The Frog Pond Café in Cheticamp are two of our favorites. If you are travelling through Mabou - the Red Shoe Pub is a great spot. The Doryman Pub in Cheticamp has lots of great music (fiddling, great traditional music, etc). If you travel to Baddeck (about an hour away on the Cabot Trail) - check out the Herring Choker, a great little café & bakery. There is also the first brewery in Cape Breton there - the Big Spruce Brewing Company (beautiful spot). In Margaree (about a 30 minute drive) is a great cafe called the Dancing Goat (and across the street is a great local artisan shop called Two Macs)

• Beaches are wonderful! If you walk from the house just down our dirt road (heading in the direction of Cheticamp) in a few minutes you will get to some large boulders on the left & here is a path down to the beach. It is a rocky beach - but the rocks are incredibly beautiful & often you will find you are the only one there. One of our favorite beaches is Margaree Harbour beach (about a 20 minute drive). There is also the Cheticamp Island Beach (just 5 or so minutes away).

It is such a slow & simple place. Sunsets are beautiful from the porch. There are often bald eagles on the cliff in front of the house. There is a sweet little museum down at the harbor at the end of our road that teaches about the mi-careme (or mid-lent) festival celebrated in Cheticamp and by many Acadian communities. Le Trois Pignon is a cultural center in Cheticamp that has a wonderful display of hooked rugs & explains the history of hooking in the area.

Enjoy & let me know if you have any questions.
