About MARGARET SMITH PIERCE

Mike and I are 30 year residents of the Big Island. We have always loved the Volcano area and spent a lot of time camping and staying at different B&B's in the area. We purchased Pukeawe Cottage in 2001 and then within the next few years we were able to purchase the lots on both sides of our house giving us almost an acre of land. Much of the land was over taken by invasive species and we have worked hard to clear the land and replant with natives and non invasive plants. We feel very proud of what we have created here and hope our guests enjoy the park like surroundings.

MARGARET SMITH PIERCE purchased this house in 2001

Why MARGARET SMITH PIERCE chose Volcano Golf and Country Club

We chose to buy our future retirement home in this neighborhood because it is secluded yet close to all the things we enjoy. Hiking and biking and working in our gardens are things we enjoy when we visit our home in Volcano and we look forward to doing more of it when we are able to retire. We are both very busy small business owners in Kona so we cherise all the time that we have at Pukeawe Cottage.

What makes this house unique

You will be visited daily by the birds that drop in to be fed. We provide the food so

you can enjoy their presence.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The cottage was so great! I didn't want to go home! Cozy fire, beautiful stairs and rooms. We went bike riding, ate some Thai food & got a souvenir from Volcano. Thanks so much!

It is so peaceful.

wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect home for our family! It is immaculately clean and every convenience was provided. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of room to spread out. We had 6 in our party. There is wifi and books/dvds - multiple entertainment opportunities. But it honestly is just SO CUTE. There are almost tame pheasants and finches that will come in the mornings when you throw out bird seed. There is a garden area and side porches. Extra parking. Super great location for all things related to Volcano and the Volcano Winery is walking distance. Go for a tasting one afternoon - you won't regret it. We went back up to the outlook at the national park one night and got to see lava boiling and shooting up. It was amazing. Thank you for such a wonderful place to call home.

The house was so charming. Yard was so beautiful. We were able to find everything we needed in the kitchen/pantry. Lot of birds visiting the yard. Definitely would come back.

Beautiful cottage in a great setting

  • 5 of 5

I absolutely loved this cottage! First, the location: so close to the national park, making it easy to stop back in between outings. Also, we walked to the winery, 5 minutes away, and enjoyed a wine tasting. The outdoors is lovely; the owners clearly take pride in it. One added perk is that they provide bird seed, so in the morning you can sit and watch all the pretty birds come to feed, a great way to start the day.

Inside, the cottage is comfortable and very well-stocked. Whatever you need, they have. I shared with my mother, and we each had our own room. I will say that since the only heat is from the woodstove, it helps to be able to know how to build a fire (luckily for me, my mom has those skills). But there are also comfy blankets. The house just feels welcoming and like a real home rather than a sterile vacation rental.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review of our property. It does get quite cold in the winter months and the wood stove is the primary source of heat. We do have several electric space heaters and electric blankets on all the beds. Sounds like maybe you didn't locate the space heaters. Glad your Mom was able to build a fire. Happy you were comfortable. Mike and Margaret

Perfect for exploring Volcanoes NP

  • 5 of 5

We stayed only one night, but it was the perfect place for our family of 6. Super cozy and nice. Wood-burning stove. The kids loved the yard. Just minutes from the entrance to Volcanoes national park -- it was a snap to drive over late at night to see the glow of the lava lake in Halema'uma'u Crater.

Consider stopping at a larger grocery store prior to arriving at the house to grab your main supply of groceries -- the store in the town of Volcano is handy, but it's a smaller, convenience-type store.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of our property. We are glad you took advantage of the location and viewed Halema'uma'u at night. Sometimes it is much more than a glow. We have seen some large lava fountains on several occasions. Your suggestions of shopping ahead at a larger store is very good. Volcano village has a couple of small stores and there is also a convenience type store at Kilauea Military Camp right across the highway from our neighborhood but no large grocery stores near by. Amazing and felt like home

  • 5 of 5

One of the best places we have stayed. Attention to detail was amazing. We didn’t want to leave. We had our two young kids with us and they just loved everything about the house and property.

The best part was it was spotless and also provided the little things such as hot chocolate, coffee, laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner and all the amenities. These little things mean a lot to travelers (especially those with kids that always forget things) and it made the stay that much better.

We really felt like we were home rather than renting a home when we were there and even my 3 year old was sad to leave. We had a great time and loved the house and wish we could stay so much longer.
