About Mike Karlson and Lisa Christensen

I am the owner/operator of Honu Sports. I have lived in Hawaii for over fourteen years, and am originally from California. I started Honu Sports 14 years ago and am a scuba diving instructor and captain. We offer daily scuba and snorkel charters.

Mike Karlson and Lisa Christensen purchased this condo in 1998

Why Mike Karlson and Lisa Christensen chose Kona Coast

My mother owns the condo unit and I manage it. She bought it because of its great location and beautiful view. She bought it for family and friends and she has never lived in it. We both live within minutes of the condo.

What makes this condo unique

I love the sound of the surf and the great view of the ocean. It is beautiful to see the dolphins spinning in the mornings and sunsets in the evenings. I love that it is in town and convenient to all that Kona has to offer.

Just as described! Wheelchair Friendly.

We searched many sites for a condo in the main walking area of town, with a pool, elevators, and workable with a wheelchair... and chose this unit. You will find that there are very few locations that can fill all three of these.

We were familiar with the location of the building from an earlier vacation to Kona, but had not been past the storefronts on the first floor. 503 is just as pictured and described, and has all the little extras you may need for time at the beach, including coolers and folding chairs. It also has a first rate view out the front when you are home. Turtles, dolphins, dug-out's, and iron man swimmers could be seen all day long from the living room sofa. The covered parking is a great extra.

My wife is in a wheelchair; and this unit has a queen bed, which allows for more clearance for walkers and wheel chairs in the bedroom - and Lisa has a tub/shower chair available for use. We brought our own suction grip grab bars just to be sure. With an assistant, the entire property worked well...we could get the wheelchair around, the halls, the elevator, pool, sidewalks, and out into the town with no issues. Without an assistant, my wife did well in the unit, halls, elevator, and pool; but had issues working with the main lobby doors the elevator. The height of the lock, in combination with the strength of the door closers ended up repeatedly trapping her until someone else came down the elevator or entered the lobby. This is not likely to be an issue for most people, but when I was scuba diving, this ended up limiting her ability to get to the pool as frequently as she would have liked.

Overall - wheelchair or not - this is a great property.

great location....

  • 5 of 5

We spent one week here and it just flew by. Such a great location, we walked every morning along Alii Drive. Had coffee at Lava Java. and malasadas at Happy Donuts. It was so nice being able to walk to so many shops and restaurants. Every night falling asleep to the sounds of the waves breaking against the rocks and waking up to the smell of fresh salty air, a dream for us. We will definitely be coming back! Alhoa and Mahalo......

Great condo in a great location with incredible sunsets

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 2 fabulous weeks in Kailua-Kona and were lucky enough to have come across this condo on VRBO. It was perfect for us and the location in the heart of town made walking to meals fun and easy. It is on the 5th floor, directly off Alii Drive and the ocean is right there!! We never closed our doors to the lanai and loved the sound of the waves rolling in. I got some incredible sunset pictures and we loved Wednesdays when the Cruise ship parked outside our room! The condo was very clean and had everything we needed. Mike & Lisa were great to work with and fixed the one issue we had immediately. We would definitely recommend this place and hope to stay there again next year. Also, the covered, designated parking place was an added bonus.

Convenient location, comfortable accommodations, wonderful property managers. Simply... perfect.

My wife and I LOVE to vacation in Hawaii. While planning this trip to the big island -- our third -- we were lucky enough to discover this very affordable condo right on Alii drive in the heart of Kailua-Kona. The condo is a wonderfully comfortable home base for great day-trips to anywhere on the big island. (There is even a reserved parking space in a covered lot. Very convenient!)

But you don't have to drive to enjoy several of the most popular places in Kona. There are a lot of great bars, restaurants, and shops nearby, all within easy walking distance. For example, immediately south of the building is the Island Lava Java restaurant. It's SO good, morning, noon, and night. Bonus: there's a great little tattoo shop nearby if you're considering taking home a lasting memory. (;->) There's a trolley service too, to take you to places that are a little farther than you care to walk.

The managers, Lisa and Mike, are amazing. They make arrival, orientation, and departure as simple and convenient as it can possibly be. And, it seems that they know just about everyone on the island, and vice versa. If you want to experience Hawaii -- more than just the typical tourist traps -- ask for and follow their advice. Sailing, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, hiking, general sight-seeing... ask them; they'll hook you up!

I have been very lucky to travel to a lot of places in my life. Without hesitation I can say that Hawaii is the most fascinating and enjoyable place I have ever been, and this condo is a GREAT place to call home while you're there.

The location is perfect. It's VERY comfortable, it had everything we needed; it's an awesome price-performer. The view of the ocean from the lanai is breathtaking. Having coffee there in the morning, and enjoying a glass of wine and the sunset in the evening... wow... you really MUST do yourself this favor. You will love it.

Great Condo in the heart of Kona

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for five nights and couldn't have been happier with our experience. The condo was clean, well appointed, and the perfect size for the two of us. The ocean view is fantastic, and really dominates the room, in the best way. You will be absorbed in this view while you're eating breakfast on the large and comfortable lanai, of course, but you'll also be just as likely to find yourself staring out it while you're in the kitchen making coffee. If you are here for the ocean, you will not be disappointed, as this condo seems designed to bring it to you. You can hear the soothing crash of the ocean waves from every room in place.

The location is perfect for easy access to everything you need in town. Walking distance to the farmer's market, and all manner of restaurants and cafes. If you have a car, covered parking is provided and easy to access. What's more, Mike and Lisa have provided everything you need for a great stay in Kona, from beach chairs and towels, to wi-fi, spotting scope, TV, washer/dryer, and plenty of cupboard space.

Mike made checking in and out very easy, and was easily accessible for any questions or needs. We really couldn't have asked for anything more and were thrilled with our stay. We would absolutely love to stay here again if we ever have the chance. We hope we do!

Great condo

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I just returned from a one week vacation on the Big Island and stayed in this condo. It was very comfortable with the Hawaiian decor, comfortable bed and furnishing and big lanai over looking the ocean. We had breakfast very morning on the lanai and watched the town come to life. It's central location is perfect for walking to all restaurants and local shopping, especially the farmer's market where we bought papayas and pineapple. All transactions with Mike and Lisa were efficient and easy. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
