Overview

About the property

7 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps 17, 18 with rollaway

Complete with old wooden beams and brilliant sunrise and sunset views. It is a wonderful house for large families, groups of friends or anyone who simply likes lots of space, airy rooms, scrubbed pine floors and country living by the sea. Perfectly located at the end of a quiet private road, you can relax to your hearts content. Watch seagulls wheeling high overhead, inhale the wonderful mixed fragrance of pine needles and salty sea air, listen to bird songs or stroll down to the shore in Hulls Cove to look for sea glass and other treasures that the sea has left behind. Acadia National Park is just down the road. Hike or bike the scenic carriage roads and trails, climb a mountain, go sea kayaking or walk over to secluded Lake Wood for a swim.

May we also suggest taking a moment to look at our 6 bedroom Orchard House situated on the same private lane.

It is property # 3752195 on Homeaway and VRBO

Guestbook comments from the manager

This group of Alaskan gals (and 2 guys) were constantly commenting on how much they love this house. All the little details were noticed. The towels were plush, the beds comfy, the bathrooms plentiful, the deck sublime, the deer adorable. we had a wondeful time here. Thank you!

Notes:
This is a wonderful house for children; with one and a half acres of rolling lawns, lightly wooded for adventures and exploring. Well behaved dogs are welcome but because of the town leash law they are not allowed to roam free. The house is stocked with everything necessary to make your stay carefree. A large deck and patio with a gas and charcoal grill offer plenty of room for outdoor dining. It is a short Walk to the Hulls Cove General Store where you can get a morning newspaper and local gossip or catch the Island Explorer Shuttle bus to downtown Bar Harbor and most points in Acadia National Park and on Mount Desert Island.

The outside grounds were great for activities, bbq, afternoon happt hour, lawn games. Great nature viewing--deer, wild turkeys, groundhog and lots of birds.

Charming, secluded farmhouse that oozed personality and character.

  • 5 of 5

The home was unique in every sense of the word. We loved it! Everyday we'd notice a new piece of furniture or picture that just made you stop and take notice. The property was perfect for our group of 12. There was plenty of room for large family get togethers and dining and other rooms where everyone could have their own private time to relax and unwind. The kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked - the basics and much more were thoughtfully provided. Thanks for a wonderful week!

Maine Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect week in the Bar Harbor area, couldn't ask for better weather. It was a family vacation of - 10 adults/8 children. The house was perfect for our large family, plenty of beds for everyone.. The house is conveniently located near downtown Bar Harbor (about 10 minutes) & the entrance to Acadia (5 minutes). After a busy day sightseeing we returned to the house to enjoy the large yard. We brought along corn hole & the house was equipped with other outdoor toys & horseshoes. The kitchen dinning area provided plenty of seating for meals and for board games. The house is on a dead end - no traffic.

Charming, spacious farm house

  • 4 of 5

Three families--6 adults and 6 kids ages 19 to 9--stayed for a week and had a great time. The house is charming and spacious. Bedrooms were all good sized and one of them (BR #7) was huge. Lots of seating in the kitchen for a crowd, and the living room is large with lots of comfy leather couches and chairs. There's an additional sitting room, too, when family members need to get away from each other!

Trish was great to work with, very responsive. Trish is generous in stocking up the house with toiletries, paper towels, etc that normally don't come with a house rental.

Location was superb. The house is at the end of a private road, so no traffic at all in front of the house. It feels very secluded. We never saw the neighbors (only on one side). The lawn is expansive and was great for kids to run around. We ate every meal on the large deck. A restaurant in Hulls Cove, Peppers, served Guiffords ice cream (try the Maine Black Bear--yum!) , which is less expensive than the more famous location in Bar Harbor). The "secret" lake up the road has great swimming and diving off the rocks--a huge hit with the kids. Trish will tell you how to find it. I'm not writing it here so it says a secret!

We rated this 4 stars because we did have a few house maintenance issues, which may have been due to a late-season rental (end of August) and the wear-and-tear that comes with weeks of rental use.

Also, a heads-up on location: As mentioned above, the house is located on a private road off of Crooked Lane in Hulls Cove. Be advised that Route 3 West heading out of Bar Harbor is closed for long-term rebuilding (I believe the sign said until 2019) and all traffic is diverted onto Crooked Lane. Crooked Lane doesn't have a sidewalk or shoulder, so it's a bit daunting walking to the general store or ice cream store as cars and trucks fly by.

That said, the house is a 3-minute bike ride to the Hulls Cove Visitor Center and the start of the carriage paths, so if you enjoy biking, this is an ideal house location.

Owner's Response: It was an absolute pleasure to have your family staying here at the farmhouse and so very glad that you enjoyed everything about the house, Acadia national park and the rest of our beloved Island. Our own children grew up here, and had endless fun and adventures in peace and safety so it is really lovely to know that your children enjoyed the very same things. We always aim for perfection on our end but sometimes even though we watch for it, a little thing can get by us in which case we definitely appreciate your bringing it to our attention.

19th century feel with 21st century amenities

  • 5 of 5

Quaintly set in the country with less than 20 minutes to key places including Acadia Park and Bar Harbor. Children loved cliff diving, sand beaches and a local park's rope climbing, not to mention being five minutes away from ice cream and pizza. We all loved walking the beach during low tide and many of us spent much time hiking Acadia's trails.

This is the first rental we've had that provided bathroom and kitchen paper goods along with bonus items like make-up removal, soap and hair dryers. Nice!

Cider House Farm has the charm of an old home--uneven floors, creaky beds, no air-conditioning (not needed; house full of fans), wrap-around porch, and loads of decor that set us back to its 1865 origin. We'd recommend this property to anyone who appreciates the old, blended artistically with the amenities of today. Trish Ropp, the owner, was friendly and helpful, available at anytime--a pleasure to work with her. Thank you, Trish, for making Cider House available to rent.

Great owner, Great location, Great historic home

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family of ten just completed a two week stay in the Cider House. This home handled the three sections of our family perfectly with room for more. Each daughter's family had a wing of there own upstairs and my wife and had our own bedroom and bathroom on the first level.

This home has all the charm that you would expect in one of its age. The seating area in the dining and kitchen area are very adaquate and could handle more than our family of ten.

The property is beautiful and provides plenty of space for the sports equipment provided with the Cider House. Following a day with the crowds in beautiful Bar Harbor and Acadia, this home, although only one mile from the Hulls Cove Visitor Center of Acadia allows you to relax in a secluded country like setting.

In short - from ages 7 to 72 - we loved The Cider House.

Hulls Cove is a quiet and beautiful little cove just 3 miles from downtown Bar Harbor. The sun rises over the water and the Porcupine islands, each morning; the sky and sea delight the eye. Some days the islands are draped in fog and the water looks like silver. Other days the water sparkles like diamonds and countless shades of blue. It is ever changing and always breathtaking. At the Hulls Cove General Store you can pick up coffee, a newspaper and grocery items or board the free Island Explorer shuttle bus. The Chart Room Restaurant offers delicious dining right on the water or pop into Peppers for pizza and calzones.

Lake Wood is just up the road. It is part of Acadia and a great place to swim. Bullfrogs like it too!
