3 Bed, 5 bath Spanish Colonial in Historic Centro, with sunny courtyard

**Please note: We use this house each year from November until April. Sometimes we travel on short notice and the house may be available for rental during those months. Thanks for your understanding.

Beautifully renovated and stylishly decorated, our 3 bedroom home features Spanish Colonial architecture and all the modern conveniences! Perfectly suited for 2-3 couples, we have a truly enviable location, just two easy blocks from the Jardin. Our outdoor areas include a spacious center courtyard with fountains and refreshing dipping pool, a second level covered patio with wet-bar, and a covered rooftop. Plenty of places to relax, entertain and enjoy.

Your rental includes our wonderful housekeeper, Sofi who can also prepare simple and delicious Mexican fare. Meals prepared during her working hours are included, although you will need to pay her for groceries, or any extra hours involved. Ricardo is our gardener and comes Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to tend the plants and pools. Both are trusted members of our household -- we wonder how we ever managed without them!

The location is unmatched for walkability and convenience to the Jardin (two blocks North), Parque Juarez (one block South) and the busy Ancha de San Antonio shopping area. There are more than 30 eateries, from posh to simple, within a 10 minute walking radius. The closest grocery is a small but well-stocked tienda on the corner. The proprietress Eva speaks English.

The renovation of Corazon de Oro was overseen by a well-known local architect and builder, with a strong interest in historic renovations. The home is full of interesting architectural details including handsome stonework, thick walls, antique doors, cantera arches and columns, boveda ceilings, skylights and more.

The ‘golden heart’ of our property is a light-filled courtyard, featuring a trio of waterfalls, a reflecting pool and an in-ground dipping pool that can be heated on request. By day or night, there are beautiful things to see everywhere you look, making it a delight for entertaining, or for enjoying all to yourselves.

With more than 3200 sq ft of living area, Corazon de Oro is ideal for up to six adults or family group. There are living rooms on each level, indoors and out, allowing plenty of space to find quiet time or engage in different activities.

The house has a coveted southern exposure, lots of south-facing French doors, and several spacious outdoor areas. During the winter the low sun warms the house with passive solar heat; during the summer the sun is more directly overhead, which keeps the interiors cooler.

The house is located in the Historic Centro, on the first block of Sollano, a one way street heading into the center of town. It is two blocks from the central Jardin and La Parroquia, and one block from Parque Juarez. The area is a mix of private homes, and a few small businesses and boutique shops. Some very nice restaurants are located on Sollano and neighboring streets, and there is excellent shopping as well.

Being in the Historic Centro means you are likely to hear church bells, fireworks, dogs, parades, music and more – it is all random, and sometimes chaotic! Wedding parties often proceed up Sollano to the Jardin, accompanied by singing musicians, giant puppets, and the Tequila Donkey. We often race to the roof's edge to watch these 'parades' go by.

San Miguel is a wonderful walking town, and you will very rarely need paid transportation. However, taxis are plentiful and charge a flat fee of 35 pesos ($2.50 USD) for most trips. It is more at night, or if you call for a cab. There is an extensive bus system, and several reputable shuttle companies for further explorations.

Although we have no pets, there are several neighborhood cats who traverse the connected rooftops, and find our yard especially hospitable. It is okay to befriend these cats but please do not feed them, or invite them into the house. Some guests are sensitive to allergies and we want to make our house comfortable for all.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS

I designed the accommodations to be ideal for two couples sharing a house, so there are two spacious Master Suites, with very similar amenities. The Courtyard Suite is located on the courtyard level, and has direct access to the courtyard.. The Overlook Suite is located on the second floor overlooking the courtyard. In addition, there is a separate Casita suite located toward the front of the property.

COURTYARD SUITE

The Courtyard Suite features an American King bed with a unique silver-leafed tin headboard. There is walk-in closet space with drawers, a sitting area by the gas fireplace, a full-length mirror, and air-conditioning/heating system. Two sets of French doors lead directly out to the courtyard.

The Courtyard Suite has an ensuite bathroom. The large, airy shower is tiled in marble, and has two separate shower controls and shower heads. The beautiful double-sink vanity in this suite has a honed Carrara marble top and deep drawers in the solid wood cabinetry. High quality polished nickel fixtures are used throughout.

OVERLOOK SUITE

The Overlook Suite is on the second floor. It has an American King bed set in a four-post alder wood frame. An entire wall of closets will hold your wardrobe nicely. This room has a spacious sitting area in front of the fireplace, and a small desk. Two sets of French doors open to small balconies, and one of the balconies leads to a set a stairs that bring you to the Courtyard level, so you do not need to traverse the house while going down to the pool.

The Overlook Suite has an ensuite bathroom. The large, airy shower is tiled in white, and has two separate shower controls and shower heads. The beautiful double-sink vanity in this suite has hand-painted semi-recessed vessel sinks and a single deep drawer in the solid wood cabinetry. Extra towels and toiletries are stored in decorative baskets beneath the vanity. High quality polished nickel fixtures are used throughout.

Both Master Suites are located in the back of the property, far from the street. The location makes them quiet (well, as quiet as possible... In San Miguel there is no escaping the church bells, fireworks and festivities in Centro!)

All bedrooms are nicely appointed with quality bedding, pillows and linens. Custom furnishings and fixtures, made by local artisans, make these rooms extra special.

CASITA SUITE

The self-contained Casita Suite is located toward the front of the property, and is reached via a small set of stone steps inside the first estancia (sitting room). It overlooks the estancia, and has some views to the Courtyard. It also has a window to the street. It has a large bedroom, a separate kitchenette, and a charming bathroom.

The Casita Suite has a full mattress set atop a Grand Tour iron bed frame. A charming Kiva-style fireplace warms the casita, which is graced with dark wood floors. Finished in bright white and vivid reds, this space is a bit boho and welcoming. A pair of white-washed armoires store your clothes. A small TV is hidden behind a pair of doors on the fireplace wall.

The bathroom of the Casita Suite has a large sink set into solid alder cabinetry. A high round window and skylights over the shower keep this room bright and airy during the day. The

shower is spacious, tiled in red and white, and finished with polished nickel fixtures.

The Casita kitchenette is two steps above the sleeping area, in a separate room. It has a cantera counter top, and stainless steel sink. There is plenty of room to spread out, read and relax. Note: The casita is never rented separately, so you are assured of complete privacy.

LA COCINA (The Kitchen)

The main kitchen on the ground floor with a window to the street is a cook’s delight. Located in the oldest part of the original structure, some of the walls are two-feet thick and over 200 years old. It has a super-efficient galley layout, with lots of counter space and excellent lighting. It comes fully equipped with large and small appliances, quality pots and pans, and so much more.

Honed marble counters, a windowed cupola and a high boveda ceiling keep this room light and bright by day, and it has excellent task lighting. Deep drawers hold most all the plates and dishes, so it is easy to reach items. (Cooks, please ask me for the extensive list of Kitchen Equipment and gadgets.)

The Italian made stove features a five-burner gas cooktop, and two electric ovens. A nearly-silent disposal and integrated dishwasher make short work of clean up, and the kitchen faucet is a work of art which must be seen to be appreciated.

***The entire house has purified water with excellent pressure, and plentiful hot water. We drink from all taps without problem. Our water-softener removes mineral deposits which can really take a toll on your hair. ***

There is an outdoor kitchen (sink, BBQ and fridge) on the second level terrace, and also a wet-bar/kitchen in the casita.

EL COMEDOR (The Dining Room)

The semi-formal dining room, just off the kitchen, features an elegant yet welcoming trestle-style dining table, upholstered chairs and bench, which were designed and crafted by one of San Miguel’s fine wood-workers. It seats 8-10 comfortably. The elegant Manuel Padron armoire serves as a storage area for linens, tall vases, candles and some the larger kitchen appliances.

The second floor terrace is ideal for alfresco dining – anytime! Here you will find an outdoor kitchen, complete with sink, gas BBQ and mini fridge. High quality outdoor furniture makes this even more special. Sheltered from strong sun during the day, and beautifully lit by night, it is a delightful spot to take your morning coffee, a leisurely lunch or that evening libation.

Or take a meal in the Courtyard by the reflecting pool, where there is a 4 person seating area, plus two adjustable lounges. We have an outdoor gas heater to ward

Why Carla St John chose San Miguel de Allende

After several years of coming to SMA and renting some very nice vacation homes, I knew what I wanted when I was in a position to purchase. Location was paramount to my ability to explore SMA, day or night. I'm in and out, several times a day -- sometimes just to drop off a purchase, or pick up a sweater in the evening. I cannot over-emphasize the convenience of the location.

----Why We Love This Place----

San Miguel de Allende is specially blessed - Gorgeous weather year-round. Warm, welcoming citizenry, including a vibrant expat community, and locals who are rightfully proud of their special town. Fantastic food of all kinds. Festivals beyond count. Live music from classical to mariachi to street buskers. There are many opportunities to dance, take art classes, relax and rejuvenate. No car necessary! Plentiful taxis are available for 35-50 pesos, and there is so much to do within easy walking distance.

What makes this house unique

When I bought the house, it was in sore need of renovation. It had wonderful location, lots of space, lovely outdoor areas, and 'good bones', but was pretty ramshackle and certainly lacked the kind of amenities one comes to expect: reliable plumbing and private bathrooms being the most obvious.

Since it needed updating, I took the opportunity to create what I always seek in a vacation home: Open floor plan, welcoming spaces, and especially parity for couples traveling together (it's really difficult to choose a 'best' bedroom).

Notes:
Purified water throughout the house. The location is tops, and once inside, you are a world away from the Centro scene. I love the ability come and go several times a day, without a long walk or daunting hills to slow me down. The layout of the home provides privacy from neighbors. No one can see into our courtyard or pool area (unless they are in a hot air balloon). The courtyard is a jewel by day or night, with stunning vistas in every direction, and blooming plants all around. The patio is visited by hummingbirds and butterflies, the fruit trees are already producing delicious limes and oranges (which you are welcome to use during your stay). The hot tub/dipping pool is a super-relaxing way to end the day, or start it. The large rooftop with gentle double-sided glider-swing is a terrific place to escape it all, read or watch the sunset.

Wonderful!

Great location if you want to be in the centro. We love the lively environment so if you don't mind lots of music and church bells this is the place. The house is gorgeous and charming and most of all very tidy and clean. The property manager is super helpful and had great tips on eateries. I highly recommend booking and staying here! Would definitely come back.

Lovely home, fantastic location.

This home is exceptional! Well decorated, spacious, clean and comfortable. When we arrived, Sofia the housekeeper/cook was waiting on us and Manolo, the manager, arrived shortly thereafter and was incredibly helpful. The outdoor patio was an exceptional space and the roof deck under the stars or during the day soaking up the beautiful sun was awesome as well-- take a drink up there on a Friday night and listen to the beautiful music being played at the Jardin. Lovely view of the Cathedral at night. The Owner is wonderful to work with booking our stay. This home is well located-- close to the Jardin and a few minutes walk to the beautiful Rosewood Hotel and the Instituto. It is a perfect place to stay and you will not be disappointed! It is FABULOUS!

Beautiful home, great location

Like most homes in SMA, this one is discreet and plain from the street. Inside it is like a palace. It is decorated in neutral colors and well maintained. It has comfortable clean upholstered sofas and chairs. There are at least three sitting areas inside.

The kitchen is large and equipped. ( You will have to buy some detergent, paper towels, etc. )

Our bedroom on the second level had a firm comfortable king size bed. . One wall was dedicated to closet and storage space...enough there to stay a year!

The bathroom had a very large walk-in shower and two sinks. Toiletries and a hair dryer could be located in a drawer of the vanity.

Each bedroom had a mini-split AC unit with a remote controller if it gets warm enough to use them.

We enjoyed the outdoor areas. The grandchildren splashed in the lovely pools which are shallow and not intended for swimming. There are a multitude of doors leading to the area. The second level has a covered terrace and a grill. One more level up is a rooftop terrace with awesome views at night.

A washer/dryer are located in a room off the patio.

The house is located just a few blocks from the Jardin or center of town. Along the way are great restaurants and small shops. Across the street is a small grocery store. For major shopping a Megastore is a 30 peso taxi ride away. You can catch a taxi on Terraplen which is the next cross street from Sollano. On Saturday mornings there is a fantastic organic market on San Francisco past the Rosewood hotel.

Even though the house is in the Centro we found it to be very quiet in the bedrooms which are at the rear of the house. The walls are well insulated against heat and noise.

I can't begin to say how accommodating the owner was. She provided us with excellent information for our first trip to SMA. Manolo, the property manager, was there to greet us on arrival and stopped by two or three times to check on us. The housekeeper came three times to give the house a thorough cleaning. I felt like a queen!

There is a selection of books on the main level and DVDs located in a credenza behind the sofa on the second level.

I have only one suggestion for the owner and it is minor. It would be nice to provide a small variety of games or puzzles to appeal to kids and adults.

It was a perfect vacation and we are looking forward to another trip! Tip: Mexicans prefer cash.

Perfect vacation house while staying in San Miguel

When you first pull up to the house, it does not look like much from the outside, mainly because the houses are close together, but once you open the door it is magnificent. The kitchen was marvelous, bed rooms were warm and inviting. I loved the the little fountains. The upstairs deck and roof deck are a great place to watch a sunset and enjoy a cold beverage. We even cooked in our last night and took advantage of the large outdoor grill, which I loved. Sophie(house keeper) and Juan(outside care taker) were very friendly and professional. The location of the house is perfect, close to down town, we walked everywhere. My real rating of this place is 4.5 stars, only falling short of 5 because the pool was a little smaller than we had thought. Would love to come back again sometime!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your nice comments. To clarify for readers of the review, the pool is more like the size of a hot tub. It is perhaps 8 feet across and 4 ft deep, with seating on the sides. It's very nice for taking a dip to cool off, or to heat up for a hot tub, but it is not a swimming pool. The rectangular water feature seen in photos is a shallow fountain, not a pool. I hope that helps describe it better!

San Miguel Gem

My family of four rented this house over Easter week along with my in-laws. It was the perfect size and set-up for 4 adults and 2 kids, but three couples could make it work if someone is OK with a smaller bedroom.

The house is everything that we expected and more. It was like living in a showcase, down to every last detail. The furniture and décor is much nicer than in any house I have ever rented. It is obvious that the owner put her heart into the renovations.

The location is perfect- far enough away from the Jardin to be quiet but a very short walk to shopping and restaurants. An equally short walk in the other direction to the lovely Parque Juarez.

The property manager Manolo was wonderful, he was there to greet us on arrival and gave us a thorough tour of the house. He made himself available and was very quick to get back to us.

Finally, the property owner was very accessible and helpful. She was easy to contact and very responsive by email when we had questions. She even followed up with us during our stay to make sure that we were happy.

Overall one of the best vacations we have had, thanks in part to this amazing property.

MAGNIFICENT

Where can we begin to tell you how much we LOVE this property? We came for a week in August. The location is marvelous. A few blocks to the Jardin and Juarez park and the city's best restaurants. Right in the center of it all is this oasis of elegance and beauty that we feel fortunate to have found. The design of this property with respect to the architectural elements, the colors, open and naturally lit spaces and how all of the rooms connect are amazing. This is a very large special property with so many areas where people could hang out. Really several living rooms including the beautiful courtyard, the roof, the main living room on the first floor, a smaller area with its own fireplace near the dining room, the wonderful porch with an outdoor barbecue, and a beautiful other living room on the second floor. There are two spectacular master bedroom suites with amazing bathrooms and great closet space. What is difficult to describe is the beauty of the property. The stonework, the lighting design and fixtures, the use of gorgeous antique wooden doors throughout, the tiled floors, the furnishings, and the tile work in baths and number and placement of plants in terra cotta pots throughout the villa. No expense seems to have been spared in this property: from the architecture, design, furniture, linens etc. high-end. Understated elegance and colonial beauty with a modern edge (example the waterfalls within the arches surrounding the dipping pool). The kitchen is also beautiful and highly functional with every potential gadget one might want or need. In the front part of the property is a sweet small casita that serves as another lovely smaller bedroom complete with en suite bath and its own small living room. The casita is connected through the main villa living area as well. The house keeper Sofi does a great job keeping this prize IMMACULATE and can make breakfast if you ask. Manolo, the house manager is a phone call away, extremely friendly, and always available for any questions etc. Really, very very clean and smelled wonderful. We could not have better dreamed up this lovely villa in such a magical city. Photos do not do it justice. We too were reticent leaving a review as we are in the midst of planning a return and don’t want to risk it not being available.
