Beautiful, away from it all vacation!

  • 5 of 5

The area here is beautiful. My husband and I love the mountains and this offered the most peaceful, beautiful trip we had been on. No way to give less than 5 stars even with the few inconveniences of being out in the middle of nowhere. Amazing place! The sky is full of stars and the river on the property is crystal clear. The house is absolutely beautiful, clean and offered amazing views. Our 2 teenage boys and our lab were with us. They Loved it! We explored the river, fished and even explored the cave on the property. There is a climb up to the cave and a good 15 ft steep drop to get down in it. Take a light with you. We saw wildlife and even a bear while hiking in the woods on the property. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the top of the mountain. It is a steep climb. The path is wide and open. We enjoyed roasting marshmallows at the fire pit. The ladybugs do come out in the afternoon when the sun comes out. We couldn't sit on the decks during that time because of the swarms but it didn't bother us because they were only in the back of the cabin so we congregated elsewhere. To get to the river there, you have to walk down the driveway, turn to the right, the river lines a gravel road. The area you are allowed on is very nice and there is plenty of river to enjoy. You can drive down to the river and park at the entrance beside the gravel road. You can see the river from the cabin. It is very close and hearing the river run was so relaxing. You can't walk straight down to the river because the house is situated on the side of a mountain. My son and I hillbilly rafted the river which was fun. This would not be possible with low river levels because of the many boulders in the water. We drove an hour to Erwin to see a movie. We went out on Watuga lake which lines the roads leading up to the property for miles. It is a beautiful, clear, deep clean lake. Lakeshore restaurant is a must. It's the only restaurant we visited while in the area. Just remember, if the map says something is 22 miles- that means it's going to take you almost double that in minutes to actually get there because the roads are winding mountainous roads. My two teenage boys didn't have 1 complaint. You will never forget this place.

Owner's Response: Oct 2017 was a beautiful month to visit. The colors this year were wonderful. So good to hear that the stay was a Success. Really appreciate the 5 stars. Love to hear that all enjoyed not only the home but the scenery too. Yes, guest have a short walk or minutes drive down to the river with over 2000 feet of river frontage and fishing paradise. This river year round is up to your waistline in most spots and even as high as your shoulders in its deepest spots. On the edge next to the shoreline its shallow area great for youngsters looking to 'wade' into the water. Great hike too to the top of the hill so be sure to bring your hiking boots. Wow, how lucky to get a glimpse of a bear. Over the past ten years we have never seen one. Bears are very recluse and rarity. Glad you were able to get out and visit the quaint town of Erwin. Its a beautiful place that also offers white water rafting trips. It is just short of an hours drive to Erwin. Know too there are movies in Elizabethan and Boone. Both only a 35 minute drive from this cabin. Boone and Blowing Rock are side by side, vacation destinations that are popular with the guests. Both towns offer great restaurants, live music, shopping mall, Tanger outlet mall, TJ Max and Wal-mart. Perfect for any guest who might tire of the peaceful woods in search of some action. All roads are paved to your back door. The two lane hwy leading to town has a 45 mph speed limit and is very scenic. There are also scenic over looks along the way to take advantage of. Sorry about the lady bugs. Looks like they've moved on now. Please come back and stay with us again. Would love to have you as guests anytime.

Wonderful property with a great view

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful setting, and views of the mountains and river are gorgeous. Fishing on the river was excellent. We enjoyed relaxing on the deck every evening and cooked every meal at the cabin. You have a large kitchen and an out door gas grill. This place offers a really long dinning room table that sat everybody so we could all eat together. There's also two picnic tables on deck, great place for kids to eat and it doesn't matter what they spill. The home has gas logs upstairs and down stairs that are easy to start. The down stair game room came in handy with the teenagers and gave them enough space to watch TV and shoot pool and their own deck to hang out on. Up stairs the adults have the same set up with our own TV, fire place and our own deck. So if you are two families traveling together with kids then you should have plenty of room. The home was very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. Everyone in our group really enjoyed and yes, I think we'll be back later this summer and bring our boat. Gorgeous area, paved to the back door. Wifi works pretty good. You have unlimited long distance on the house phone which is nice because cell service in the mans isn't that great. Thanks for sharing you home. We very much enjoyed.

Great Experience

  • 5 of 5

Great stay at a great cabin.

This place has awesome views with a big river running past. It is truly a mountain get away, towns a good 30 minutes. Didn't realize how close to Beech Mtn so we'll be back for a ski trip this winter. Very clean, lots of nice furniture and a well supplied kitchen. We called the housekeeper and asked for help with a flat tire and her brother came right over and helped us. We enjoyed every evening, kicked back listening to the river and just hanging out together. Enjoyed, will be back.

October was a paradise stay for our family!

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our stay here at the cabin. Our family is very out doorsey. We enjoy hiking, fishing and canoeing. This was the perfect spot. The place was clean and well furnished. Evening cooled down enough for us to use the fireplaces, the gas logs came on with just a flip of the switch on the wall. The kitchen is very spacious and had lots of cookware that looked fairly new. Coffee maker, crockpot, fry pans and pots. Just about what you'd expect, nothing fancy but clean. After spending the first night, we all woke up refreshed and said wow, those beds are great. Even my husband who is hard to please said his back felt much better. The beds are memory foam and extremely comfortable. Upstairs is a little hotter than down stairs so if you’re cold natured stay upstairs and if your hot natured stay in the down stairs bedroom where my husband and I stayed. Bedroom stays dark too even with the morning sun which allowed up to sleep in and get much needed rest. We received a call from housekeeping to insure we were comfortable and enjoying which we really appreciated. Didn’t need anything but nice to know someone is around in the area. You are really out in the country but the 30-40 minute drive back to town is only one road and a very easy scenic drive. Our paper work directed us to several local activities. We visited Shirley’s restaurant and the Captains Table which were just 10 minutes down the road. Shirley’s made us feel like we were family and the Captains Table serves adult beverages so we all indulged in a margarita. The next day we visited a winery on Watauga lake. They offer free tastings, have pretty good wine and sell bottles that are very inexpensive. The views off the deck of the cabin are gorgeous. Listening to the river below is very relaxing and a big plus. There's two picnic tables, a bunch of chairs and a very comfortable love seat and two cushioned chairs around a cocktail table. So plan on spending a lot of time on deck. It was our favorite place to park in the evenings. We walked along the river in the evenings too and explored, we also hiked to the top of the mountain which was fun and great exercise. We’ll give this place 5 stars all around. Just know cell phones don’t work well but the house phone offers long distance so its no big deal. We just forwarded our calls to the cabin. Thanks for letting us enjoy your bit of paradise.

Owner's Response: Thanks to you all for saying such kind words and giving future guests an idea of what to expect. Glad you all had fun, followed the welcome package and tried the area activities suggested. Being on almost 40 acres and having so much river frontage makes this an ideal spot for active families and outdoorsmen. Know you are always welcome back.

Did not love it.....has potential, but

  • 1 of 5

The views are great; the sound of the river below is clearly relaxing. My overall impression is that the house is well used with not much reinvestment in its upkeep. The opening pic on the site shows leather furniture that looks comfortable and inviting. I should have paid better attention to the furniture in following pictures and noted they are not the same...and not comfortable at all. There is no direct lighting over the dining table and every cushion of the dining chairs are hollowed out, we had to take the pillows from the sofas to sit comfortably during dinner. The kitchen oven had not been cleaned in what appears to be a long time. If you love to cook, the lighting in the kitchen is poor, some due to missing lights but mostly overall kitchen design with no overhead lighting shining down, several lights throughout the house had burnt out bulbs. There are no dressers in any of the bedrooms nor is there any luggage stands to place your luggage. The shower in the master bath had an odor that permeated into the master bedroom, I had to go out and get a plug in air freshener. The deck had cigarette butts left in a sand ashtray and the lower deck had hardened dog poop on arrival. The deck has been neglected and railings need attention, there are decent gaps between posts and the rails across the top deck. Deck furniture is not what I would expect for a rental at this price point either, outside of picnic tables on either end, there were no side tables between chairs and no ottomans to kick back with and enjoy the view.

I spoke with the cleaning lady as we were leaving who said the house could use a deep cleaning. I relayed this info to the owner along with the above findings; I don’t think my feedback was taken as constructive criticism, she was initially confrontational on the onset of our conversation.

Owner's Response: We always appreciate constructive criticism in a respectful tone. The property is advertised as providing guests with almost 40 private acres to hike and over 2000 feet of river to fish, swim and enjoy. For future guests know there are light bulbs in the cabin cabinet above the fridge so if any burn out during your stay feel free to change or call maintenance/ housekeeping for help. Both housekeeper and maintenance are neighbors that have worked for us for many years, provide their contact numbers and would be happy to come over and help. The leather furniture, kitchen table are not brand new but comfortable and functional. There is indirect lighting in the kitchen which is softer than florescent lighting. We advertise deck chairs, picnic table, a large gas grill on deck. There's also a coffee table, cushioned love seat and two cushion chairs that is almost brand new. All bedrooms have large closets for guest use and plenty of room for their suitcases. We found no odor in any of the bath rooms. Deck is power washed frequently and railing is built to code and in very good shape. Our housekeeper is a sweet heart and handled this aggressive guest politely and professionally. All decks were swept and clean just prior to this guests arrival. This guest stayed for 10 days, never called to report any problems and brought a dog which may explain the poop on deck that our housekeeper spent the afternoon cleaning up.
