Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is a small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door.
Puako is conveniently located for visiting all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, first class restaurants, shops and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may choose, with the exception of the volcano which is a 3 hour drive from Kohala.
Several fabulous beaches are minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding.
The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 40 minutes, Kailua Kona 50 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes.
The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 150 feet from your doorstep with crystal blue water that is 72-76 degrees year round.
Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.
Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort.
The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!
We love this place! Thanks for keeping it so nice! Hope to return someday. The house was more than we expected, even though we stayed here before it was better than ever. Love that you allow direct beach access through the main house yard - we noticed that few other cottages do so. Wouldn't be the same to walk around to the public access. We didn't need the A/C but it's a nice option and the fresh orchid is lovely. Staff at Aloha Debbie was friendly and professional.
Puako is a quiet residential beach area with a lot of lava and not a lot of sand--in many areas the water is also very shallow. The cottage isn't meant for a long stay--with only one inside reading chair and three feet of kitchen counter, this is a unit for people who will be gone all day. The two twin beds masquerading as a king bed are not comfortable and the entire unit could use a deep clean, new sheets and a few matching plates and glasses. The ocean view from the bedroom is nice but the lanai overlooks the driveway. It is inexpensive but we wished we had spent more.
This property is amazing. We stayed in the studio above the garage and it was well appointed. It had everything you could ever need and more. There was a beautiful ocean view from our bedroom! The beach was just a short walk across the lawn where we went snorkeling, swimming, and sunbathing daily. There's plenty of chairs for hanging out on the beach and watching the sunset. It was very private. We hardly saw anyone on our beach and never saw the homeowners the whole time we were there.
The unit had a beautiful large 2 sink vanity; it also had a walk in closet and plenty of towels for us to use. We felt so lucky to stay here, and all the neighboring homes were very high end (and quiet). The kitchen and dining area fit our needs perfectly. The King size bed is two twin beds pushed together so as long as you're not positioned in the center - it's very comfortable. We would definitely stay here again... and hope to be back soon.
Lovely garden apt. Well appointed, great lanai overlooking a huge monkeypod tree and mango trees. Very close to the beach- a stroll across the lawn and you're there. Quiet neighborhood. Lots of Aloha from neighbors and at the little General Store across the street. Go, you won' be disappointed!
My wife and I enjoyed the best vacation yet while staying in this cottage right on the beach. We have been to Hawaii 5 times and this accommodation tops the list. We had everything we needed in the kitchen, and were within walking distance of the general store. We had snorkeled all over the island and decided to finally snorkel in our backyard and for the first time encountered turtles. We really had diamonds in our backyard and did not know it. We would stay here again and again. Great neighborhood and wonderful and the cottage was perfect.
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at Hale Okalani. We stayed for 5 nights in February 2014. They have everything you could need: beach towels, boogey boards, bikes/helmets, cooler, beach chairs, maps, guidebooks- not to mention a hair dryer, little bath things, bath towels, etc. The kitchen is stocked as well with a blender, pans/pots, toaster oven, microwave, etc. They have plenty of plates and cups and wine glasses There is a little general store across the street that stocks ice and anything you could forget, and about 10 minutes to the south is a Foodland grocery store where you can stock up on your food. And the closest gas station we could find was about 15 minutes away.
The location is perfect. The owner's backyard is the beach, and the beach has a great reef with tons of fish and sea turtles galore, perfect for snorkeling and exploring. And during whale watching months, it's perfect! We saw more whales than we could count just from the beach. They are about a 4 minute drive from Hapuna Beach, and about 10-15 min drive from the Waikoloa resorts. We did excursions up past Hawi and Waipio Valley, and it really didn't feel like we were driving forever. Helps it's all so pretty. It was a pretty perfect central location.
The room itself is nice as well, the bed was comfortable and there was a/c for the warm nights. It was quiet. From the main bedroom window, you see the ocean. There is a bbq on the porch, but we never got around to sitting out there, we always went down to the beach. The owners are friendly, but you do barely see them. True, the wifi isn't great, but that wasn't a big deal for us and the shower could be improved a bit, but it wasn't a drawback at all. We'd definitely stay here again!
The location of this rental is very nice. Located in a quiet neighborhood on puako beach. We were happy to have such close access to the tide pools on puako beach. This kept our 4 year old entertained for hours. The swimming and snorkeling at this beach is decent.
The rental itself does not have ocean views. I would not recommend this rental for people who might be spending a lot of time in it. It is nicely furnished with everything a person might need and served us well as a place to sleep and clean up. It does NOT have reliable wi/fi.
We were able to explore the island and many beaches from this location and will probably stay somewhere near Puako beach when we visit again someday.
