About Karen Olson

Aloha! Brent, originally from Oregon, and I (Karen) originally from Ohio, both moved to Kauai in the early 1980's (when we were too young to know any better) met, fell in love, got married, and have been here ever since. With my design background and Brent being a general contractor, we began Olson Homes Inc. which is a design/build firm specializing in custom homes here on the south side. We live in Kalaheo, but ever since I came here and fell in love with Kauai, I dreamed of having a little place in Poipu, near the beach. I never thought it would happen, but this property kind of fell in our laps and my dream came true! And we set out to build our perfect beach cottage. We named it Ke'ola, 'the life', because we feel it represents the amazing quality of life that Kauai has to offer. Karen is a plein air (outdoor) painter, and you can see her work at

Why Karen Olson chose Poipu

Perfect location and an incredible beach house.

What makes this house unique

We manage this rental ourselves, live in Kalaheo (15 minutes away) and Brent is usually working in Poipu - so anything that we have overlooked we can take care of immediately. Just call or text, and we will take care it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such an amazing family vacation. Such a beautiful home! Kids both said they were glad we stayed here and not at a resort. Hope to come again some day, we are all pretty sad to be leaving :(. Thanks for everything karen!

Luxury in Real Life

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough about this house. Not only is it stunning and filled with gorgeous art and architectural details, everything has been considered to provide an outstanding stay. A brief walk to the beach allows you to watch the seals every night and enjoy sunset in paradise. We loved relaxing on the lanai, dining outside, or letting the outside in with the big sliding doors. Having an outdoor shower for sand (or just for everyday!) was nice and the walk-in closet and master bath are amazing. Proximity to the walking trail also makes a dinner date at the Hyatt a breeze as well. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a vacation where real life can feel luxurious.

Amazing Kauai beach house,

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Ke’ola beach cottage! The house was perfect for two couples and was equipped with everything we needed. We loved the doors that opened onto the lanai and made that space so enjoyable! It was a short walk to the beach and many shops and restaurants were a short drive away. We hope to come back and stay here again! Mahalo!

It was perfect. Family of 4, kids 5 and 3. Easy access to beach, and path.

This was just magical. First time to Kauai for our birthdays. The location of the house to Poipu beach was just a short walk. We arrived to the beach to be greeted by monk seals and beautiful sea turtles.

People recommended lydgate beach for the kids. But to be honest, poipu beach was nicer, prettier and in walking distance.

We headed to Kauai after An RV excursion in California. I normally would list all the places we saw but the house, location was everything we needed and wanted. The hot tub was nice, we didn’t end up using a lot. The kids loved running around the property, enough room to chase them and throw the ball around.

We had dinner every night on the lanai, listening to Fred Astaire, dancing with my husband and kids. I was in heaven as the song goes. And it was playing on an amazing sound system. It was magical...these are the moments that I relish when I drink in my memories. We did this nightly, loving our sanctuary in a place that smelled as good as it Felt!

Thank you Kauai... and to Karen for letting people come together in a beautiful home to make memories!!!

Truly paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Kauai, traveling our teen-aged sons, and it was wonderful. Karen and Brent's home is beautiful and well-designed! We loved all the wonderful details and amenities of the house. The kitchen and pantry are well-stocked with everything you need for cooking and Fiestaware dishes, that made cooking easy (we made most meals at the house after shopping at Costco and Safeway in nearby Lihue).

Most of our time was spent on the porch with the doors open (we only used the screen door at night) and there were geckos, birds, and chickens (of course) to watch each day. The neighborhood is residential and quiet and the beach is just a short walk away. We had many walks along the beach and saw sleeping turtles and monk seals each day.

Karen also provides a notebook of local places to shop, eat and visit that was very helpful in deciding what to do. Just be aware that some restaurants in the area close at 7:00 pm.

The clothes washer was an appreciated feature because we didn't have to pack as much and I got everything washed before we went home!

We did spend some days hiking the trails to the waterfalls and also went shopping at the near by shopping areas. Don't miss the food trucks (especially Fresh Shave, Kickshaw's and Chip Wrecked at Warehouse 3540).

We highly recommend staying here and hope to again in the future!

Ke'ola Beach Cottage is located smack dab in the heart of Poipu on little Pane Road, one of the last remaining 'old Hawaii' residential streets in the area. With nothing between the cottage and the ocean, 100 steps out the door is Brennecke's beach, famous for its perfect boogie boarding waves, and if you are looking for calmer water and beautiful snorkeling, just walk next door to Poipu beach park, always on the 'top ten' list of Hawaiian beaches. Full of hustle and bustle during the day, the beaches at night become a stunning quiet oasis - best place for a moonlit walk, or a picnic dinner by the water.

Ke'ola Cottage is located about 60 feet from the Poipu Kai greenbelt walking path. This path is beautiful lighted walkway connecting everything in the area - so within a ten minute stroll you can get to the Hyatt Regency and Shipwreck beach, the Sheraton, Marriot Waiohai, Kiahuna Plantation, Ko Kea Resort ( the old Poipu Beach Hotel), Poipu Kai, Poipu Shopping Village, not to mention dozens of restaurants. Tennis is right out your back door, and the Kiahuna Golf Course and Grand Hyatt Coarse are both about a 5 minute drive away. Don't forget to check out the National Tropical Botanical Garden, and on your way there stop by Spouting Horn for the gorgeous views and the best prices on Hawaiian jewelry and trinkets.

If you like farmers markets there are two GREAT ones during the week - first is the Koloa Sunshine market every Monday and noon sharp!, located at the Koloa ball park, and all the produce is grown here on Kauai. The 2nd is the Culinary Market on Wednesdays, 4:00 pm, at the Shops at Kukuiula, There is always live music, cooking demonstrations, lots of fresh fruits and veggies, as well as prepared food vendors. - make sure you buy a slice of pie from 'The Right Slice'! This is the 'happening' place on Wednesdays for locals and tourists alike. From Kukuiula Harbor, you can catch a trip to one of the more than 20 dive sites right off our south coast, or take it slower with a sunset or whale watching trip. Take it even more easy and schedule yourself a day at one of the several spas (Hyatt has my favorite!) in the area. Again, the cottage is in a great location - right next to the Koloa Heritage Trail, which you can follow with an interpretive map and learn the history of the Koloa and Poipu area.
