About Karl Bromwell
I have been in Hawaii for over 25 years now and work at an Environmental Consulting firm as a Sr. Scientist/Water Resource Specialist. My wife, who has been in Hawaii almost as long as I, is a Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. We try and take advantage of the pristine ocean swimming, surfing, hiking and biking spots that are offered here on Oahu.
Karl Bromwell purchased this Apartment in 2011
Why Karl Bromwell chose Makiki - Lower Punchbowl - Tantalus
I came to Hawaii in 1986 on a surf excursion from NC after college and fell in love with the islands. I've lived all over the island, but ended up purchasing property in 2002 with my wife on Punch Bowl Crater. We started construction in 2004 and moved into our Hawaiian Pole House on the slopes of Punch Bowl Crater by February 2005. We've just recently completed the vacation rental in the space below the main structure.
What makes this Apartment unique
This tropical property offers beautiful views, island-style living, while centrally located providing easy access for day trip excursions!

Wonderful flat. Perfect for small family.
We enjoyed our stay very much. Conveniently located and quiet. Karl was quick to respond and very welcoming of us. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks for sharing your awesome space with us!
Clean, Convenient, Away from the Maddening Crowds
You'll get a little exercise climbing the steps up to this almost treehouse unit. Lots of Wonderfull windows and crosswinds. If that isn't enough, there are fans in almost every room.
We really liked the bamboo floors and have now decided to replace some of our flooring with something similar. It is much harder than hardwoods and so inexpensive you don't need to settle for laminate with all those harmful chemicals in the particleboard.
We loved the full sized refrigerator and cooktop range. Breakfast at home every morning and even cooked a couple of dinners.
I'm not a big fan of Waikiki. This place has the advantage of being able to get there in a few minutes for a show, which we did. However, it is nice to get out of that scene and mellow out, without the crowds or party noise. Personally, I prefer]red our evening with guitarist Jeff Peterson at Uncle's Fishmarket & Grill, which was even closer. (near Costco on Nimitz)
Comfortable Stay with Great Amenities
We really enjoyed staying in this vacation rental on the side of Punchbowl. This fit what we were looking for as it was not in Waikiki, but it was close to everything that Honolulu has to offer with easy access to the Pali Highway.
Parking: we unloaded in the driveway, and had no trouble parking across the street otherwise.
Property access: the winding path/steps up to the door was well-lit with easy access to the rental.
Cleanliness: the property was spotless upon arrival.
Entry room: there is a small bar height table and two stools, plenty of places to store unpacked luggage/shoes, and a mirrored closet with towels, hangers, iron/ironing board, broom/mop, 2 boogie boards, and a small cooler.
Bathroom: It's off the entry room with a full size washer and dryer, sink, medicine cabinet, toilet, and shower. Plenty of large, soft towels were provided, along with extra toilet paper, liquid soap, and laundry detergent.
Living area: There's a small step down to the living area, which included a small table and two chairs, a sleeper sofa (perfect for our 5-year old), TV/DVD player, and space for our toddler to sleep in a borrowed pack and play. Some of the windows have shades some don't.
Kitchen - off the living area and has a full size refrigerator with ice trays, a large sink, a cooktop, cabinet with plenty of eating, cooking, and baking utensils, and a multi-function microwave than can also serve as an oven. There was a coffee maker, filters, and coffee provided, along with some spices for cooking. There is no dishwasher, but it was easy enough to wash our own dishes and use the bamboo drying rack provided. We ended up also buying a drying mat to use while there, but brought it home as a souvenir.
Bedroom: It's a small step back up to the bedroom. There's a upright dresser perfect for clothes; a small desk with a desk lamp, local books and brochures, and a couple of fans. There was also a small filing cabinet with a printer on top. The wifi worked great! There is a queen size bed with a ledge between it and the wall, which made it easy to have our phones, water, etc. close by, and a large closet with an air mattress/bedding inside.
Temperature: Each large room has a ceiling fan and all windows open. We were comfortable temperature-wise.
Noise: The birds like to sing in the morning, but we brought portable white noise generators.
Owners: The owners live upstairs, were super responsive and provided us sand toys for the beach!
We would stay here again!
Enjoyed being away from Waikiki and having a cozy place outfitted with kitchen and washer/dryer in a quiet neighborhood. Location is very convenient to accessing freeway and getting around Honolulu. Karl, the host, is very welcoming and responsive to requests.
Easy to get to from the airport which was helpful when arriving late at night. Close to many attractions. Clean. Karl is very responsive when we texted. Keep the Windows closed at night as there's quite a bit of noise through the night. Small futon in living area was very uncomfortable but the kids managed. Bedroom was comfortable. Thanks for a pleasant stay Karl!
Comfortable place with great location
If you're looking for a comfortable place that's close to downtown and has easy access to freeways to get anywhere on Oahu, this is a great choice. Clothes washer and dryer in the unit came in handy too.
