This 1920 cottage was built by a Great Lakes ship captain. It has been in the same family 80 years. The cottage sits on a bluff hanging over the beach, a mere 56 steps below. Watch sunsets (and the kids) from a screened porch perched above the beach.
A few weeks in this cottage allows you to step back to a slower, simpler time.
The beach offers the finest, whitest sand in the world and provides miles of beautiful barefoot walking.
This is the warm, clean side of Lake Michigan. Lolling and floating in the lake in the heat of summer is an unbeatable experience.
30 yards down the private lane is a tennis court shared by you and a few neighbors on a friendly first-come, first-served basis.
Four bedrooms are located in the main house; the 5th (with bath) is in a guest house next to the garage. Both main house and guest house are air conditioned.

About Tonya Arana
We are three siblings in our 60's who grew up summering in this cottage. It was bought by our grandfather in the 1920's. Our mother grew up there as well; summertime she now lives two houses away on the same lane.

Why Tonya Arana chose Lakeside
We are three siblings in our 60's who grew up summering in this cottage. It was bought by our grandfather in the 1920's. Our mother grew up there as well; summertime she now lives two houses away on the same lane. It has hosted many of our family's weddings and reunions. This cottage is a cottage. It is well lived-in. It is not fancy. But it loves an active family, and tolerates moderate normal use well. The echoes of decades of joy linger.
What makes this Cottage unique
It is uniquely tranquil and beautiful. It is a place to create your own fun, whether in the lake, on the beach, on the tennis court, or on nearby golf courses.

Everything we needed
We needed a get away for our family ranging in ages from 22 months to 64 years old. The 8 of us each had privacy when we wanted and family time when preferred. Plumb cottage was spotless when we arrived and had everything we needed. Our family loves to cook and the kitchen was well equipped for cooking family dinners. We will go back to Plumb Cottage and next time, we'll pack less; as it's all there.
We made some great memories.
I thought the property was accurately represented online and through the photos. It is an older cottage but clean and right on the water. The price was high and we never used the separate guest house which smelled musty. The beach was beautiful and the views from the screened in porch were stunning. The two king bedrooms are a plus and the beds were comfortable with plenty of storage space. The surrounding towns are a short drive and the farmers market on the weekend in Union Pier is excellent. I would say the biggest complaint we had is the Sat-Sat rental since check-in is late in the afternoon and check out is early the following Sat. As a result, you don't get a "full" weekend and our kids that work we're not really able to enjoy the rental for more than a day.
We have been coming to Harbour County Michigan for the past five years and have stayed at a few different rental homes on the beach. This home was perfect for our family of four plus my in-laws. The guest house was great for when we had a cousin and his son come for one night as well. Staying right on the beach is priceless! This home is very casual and has a great beach cottage feel. I would also like to note that the rental company was extremely nice to work with. They were very responsive whenever we had questions and they provided lots of helpful advice about the area.
Fabulous location but house outdated
The location of this house is magnificent, but the owners clearly have not put any of their proceeds into updating this house. The furniture is old and mis-matched, and the springs in the LR sofa are such that it is difficult to extract ones-self. The guest cottage has window shades in it that are yellow from age, the lighting is dismal, and it smells of mildew. Additionally, the bathroom in the guest cottage is in serious need of an upgrade...aqua tile with yellow stains on it. Access to the beach is excellent, but there are no beach chairs anywhere to be found. Back porch with view of the lake is fabulous. One story living space is excellent for those who can't do stairs. With a little updating, this house would be a charmer, but as it is, I think it is overpriced and would hesitate to recommend it.
I'm sorry you were disappointed. We try to make it clear in our listing that this is a cottage built in 1920. We do say, "A few weeks in this cottage allows you to step back to a slower, simpler time." This is not a place for the granite countertop crowd. Happily, those with a yen for that "slower, simpler time" of the 1920's seem to prefer it. Four out of our five reviews are Five Star, mostly from return renters. We are booked heavily into October and for part of the 2014. Many of the items you mention will be fixed, but only over time. So...come with expectations of enjoying the porch, beach and dining room. If you want modern plushness, you'll find it only elsewhere.
This was the perfect spot for our small family get together. Located on the beach, the setting was gorgeous with fine white sand, perfect for building castles. The accommodations were a great fit for six adults and three small children. My wife and I opted for the guest cottage while our children and grand kids spread out in the two separate sleeping quarters in the main house. The property is very private, quiet, and had a nice home like feel to it. The grand children loved the very kid friendly large front porch and we adults were more than satisfied with the living, dining and kitchen furnishings. We had perfect weather and are considering meeting here again.
A Slice of Heaven
We stayed at Plumb Cottage last August and couldn't wait to return again this summer. As we unloaded the car, we commented that it "feels like home." Plumb Cottage has the personality of an old friend -- comfortable, casual, friendly, and nurturing. It's the perfect place for family gatherings with enough room to spread out for sleeping, but great spaces for togetherness - especially the screened porch. We had the good fortune of sharing the cottage with four generations of family members.
The private beach is truly terrific; you can't beat the fun in the sun and sand. And, the sunsets...ahhh...each night is a different and amazingly beautiful show of nature, easily watched from the porch. The neighborhood is safe and lovely - perfect for walks or bike rides. The unique shops and great restaurants of New Buffalo, Harbert and Sawyer are very easily accessible. The grandkids' favorite, of course, was Oinks! If you have any questions or issues, Tonya is just a phone call away with immediate assistance.
Plumb Cottage at Lakeside is a "slice of heaven" not to be missed.
