House, 1 Bedroom + Other (See Description), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)
Visit the little red cabin, a cozy and eclectic writer’s home in the woods, just a 5-minute walk to the village of Phoenicia. No need for a car, the Trailways bus brings you to the village, and your feet carry you the rest of the way. This 1-bedroom cabin is perfect for a single person or couple.
Built as a rustic hunting cabin in the 50s, it has been renovated with wood and ceramic tile, and decorated with traditional and contemporary art. Now it is one large (600 sf) space with a vaulted ceiling and skylights. On cold or rainy days, hang out in front of the woodstove set into a beautiful cobble-stone chimney, or luxuriate in the Mexican-themed bathroom, looking out into the woods as you soak in the tub. Mountain and river views are afforded from the bedroom and living room areas.
Other features include a deck with Adirondack-style chairs and table, board games, a fully-equipped kitchen in which to whip up any confection from cappuccino to cupcakes, fresh bed linens and bath towels, WiFi, unlimited phone calls, ceramic tile, and hardwood floors. There is a twin air mattress available for a third guest.
The cabin sits across a small street from the confluence of the Stony Clove and Esopus creeks. Nearby, enjoy hiking through thousands of acres of Forever Wild mountains, tubing, biking, antiquing, exploring mountain villages, farmers markets, or yoga, to name a few attractions. Fifteen minutes to Belleayre, Hunter and Woodstock.
Please be aware that this is a cabin in the woods and can have animal visitors, such as the occasional mouse or ant.
Trailways bus from Port Authority stops in the village, which is a 5-minute walk to the house. Driving time from New York is about 2.5 hours.

I'm a writer & editor. During the 10 years I lived at the cabin, I was a reporter for the local newspaper.

Why Owner chose Phoenicia
I was lucky enough to inherit the cabin from my father.

Excessive Clutter, No room for Guest Belongings, Kitchen barely functional
The cottage did not feel welcoming. If your stay is a short one---a weekend perhaps---where you plan to eat out and NOT do any cooking then this cottage could possibly work for you. But for a longer stay like ours, this was definitely not the place. Excessive clutter everywhere--no room for a guest to put belongings---every shelf & drawer - and the one closet in the cottage---was filled with owner's clothes and belongings. The kitchen was barely usable-----dirty & disorganized---with jars and bottles filled with food remnants past their prime, a tiny refrigerator badly in need of defrosting, pots and pans that needed to be scoured before you could even think about putting food into them. The kitchen counters (if you could call them that) were painted plywood and the paint was chipping. The bathroom had a tub with a hand held shower unit--difficult to navigate---and no shower curtain to absorb splashes. The toilet was malfunctioning, makeshift towel racks kept falling off, and the shelves were filled with the owner's toiletries leaving no room for the guests'. The cottage had some artsy touches (like the exotic bathroom tiled sink), and the wooded setting and attractive exterior of the house was all very nice---as was the close proximity to town. But for the most part the interior was filled with clutter (board games without the board, non-working flashlight, irrelevant odds & ends on shelves). We had to try to overlook the clutter and live out of our suitcases because the owner apparently gave no thought to the comfort of guests.
How unfortunate that you felt I didn’t care about your comfort after I counseled you on where you could have your car repaired before you even arrived, on where you could rent a car until yours was repaired, that I immediately offered to refund you for the remainder of your stay since you so clearly found my cabin unsuited to your needs, that I allowed you to stay an unspecified number of days in order to find another place, that I offered to have shelves cleared for you since you found inadequate the amount of space for your belongings—which I’ve not had complaints about before. It’s true, I didn’t have the batteries in the flashlight replaced for you. Nor did I track down the missing Scrabble board. Perhaps it was hidden within the 8 or so other board games at the cabin. As for your complaints about my pots and pans being dirty, that’s simply not true. They have been lovingly used over the years, and as anyone knows who has enameled cast-iron pans, the enamel sometimes discolors. Besides the counters you mention, I have a very large butcher block counter, which is fantastic for chopping. The tub is for seated showers and the handset is an expensive telephone stye, which is not only beautiful but functional. The photos and description of my house are accurate.
I had a great long weekend stay at the cabin in Phoenicia. Rachel was very helpful with directions and suggestions for local businesses and attractions. The cabin is beautifully decorated with great artwork and furniture, and the kitchen is well appropriated with all the cookware necessary to make most meals. The property is surrounded by trees and vegetation, which afford perfect privacy, but it's close enough to town that you don't feel isolated or completely cut-off. Nice farm markets and a full grocery store all within a 10-15 minute drive. I will definitely like to return the next time I'm in the area!
Everything you need and nothing you don't
This cabin is so cute and even better in person. It literally was perfect for a long weekend away with our dog. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen had everything we needed, and we loved sitting out on the deck listening to the water. It's a short walk into town for restaurants, shopping, the market. Absolutely perfect. We couldn't have asked for a better place!
Elisa, I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay! You were a delight to have, as well.
We had a wonderful time on our stay. Wonderful, warm and comfortable. Our three year old still talks about the amazing time she had in Phoenicia in our little cabin.
Beautiful fall getaway
My boyfriend, our dogs and myself had a great time at the Little Red Cabin. It is the perfect size for a couple and we enjoyed our nights playing scrabble (provided w the cabin) by the fireplace. There isn't a TV but with Internet access, you don't miss it and was nice to get away from. The cabin has a unique charm and we felt right at home.
The location is great and even with Rt 28 being so close, I couldn't hear the cars/trucks. We've visited Phoenicia before by way of camping but now I think we'll be renting a cabin every year instead. The town is small but has everything you will need if you don't have a car. Woodstock is only a 20 min drive and is fun to walk around as well and there are more restaurants there. Hiking in the Catskills is amazing!
Can't wait to go to Phoenicia next year!
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Little Red Cabin, everything was exactly as described on the website. Cabin was cozy, rustic and charming. Rachel was a pleasure to deal with.
Walking distance into town and hiking, just off 28 and surprisingly barely there traffic noise.
Very much enjoyed our stay and would love to return at a future date.
Phoenicia is home to white water tubing on the Esopus river.
