About Tom and Daris Hale

Tom and Daris are artsy musicians that perform with the Austin Symphony, Ballet Austin, and Austin Lyric Opera. We have spent many years performing and living abroad in places such as Italy, Austria, Mexico, Germany, and most recently in Tanzania.

We have two feral children that are relatively house broken and rarely bite. The kids have to attend ballet, opera, and symphony more than they would like and usually resort to hanging with the stage crew. Quite frequently we host foreign exchange students (high school and college) just because we enjoy sharing the best of American culture, like spray-on tans, and dog sweaters. Seriously, we love people and sharing Austin with them. We look forward to hosting you!

Tom and Daris Hale purchased this townhome in 2012

Why Tom and Daris Hale chose Austin

This property is amazing because it is very private and quiet, yet very close to Austin's finest attractions. You will be closer to ACL than people can park their cars! You can go jogging and then jump into Barton Springs. The greenbelt is great for hiking during the day and 6th Street is fab for evening pleasures. This is a great place if you want to have fun and then retreat to a peaceful accommodation. Then hopefully you will have time to enjoy some coffee from the fancy machine or watch a movie on the large flat screen TV.

What makes this townhome unique

The views, the quiet wilderness even though you are in the city, the artsy neighborhood, the greenbelt, and of course, Barton Springs-wow! Zilker Park!

Unbeatable location, place with amazing hosts

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I live in Italy, but decided to have our first child in Austin. So, we were very picky when selecting a place to pass our time for 4 months. We really did get lucky with this Townhome. :) I really can't say enough about this place and its owners. First, the location cannot be beat. I lived in Austin for several years, so I know. You are walking distance to all the best music events like ACL, Blues on the Green, etc and easy access to Town Lake, Barton Springs, etc. You are also right across the river from downtown and have easy access to 290, I35 and Mopac/Loop1. Arriving up north to Mopac/Parmer only took 45 minutes with traffic. The place is on a quiet street with amazing neighbors. We stayed here 4 months, so it really was our home away from home. The kitchen has all the amenities you might need-- tons of dishes, pots, pans and even a CrockPot! Great AC, great water pressure, lots of space, easy parking. The upstairs bedroom has a bath with a tub and a balcony with a great seating area. The downstairs bedroom has a bath with a shower and a sliding door that looks out to nature. It really is beautiful and spacious. The tv/living area is great. We were easily entertained with Netflix and all the options available to us in that regard. They even had a dvd player. They have a grill outside that they kept ready-to-go with gas for us. We grilled out often. But last and maybe most important: Daris and Tom are incredible hosts. They were soooo kind to us. Not only were they quick to respond to all emails and were available to quickly take care of any request we had, but they are just so cool and laid back that I wish they were our neighbors for life. I was pregnant, so they went out of their way to purchase cleaning supplies that were chemical free for us. Their kids are even amazing- always greeting us with a smile and a wave when we saw them. The family showered us with gifts for our newborn child too, as if they hadn't done enough to make our stay perfect. I was so sad to leave, and am looking forward to staying here again. We had an amazing stay and this place and its owners will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Excellent property, great owners, highly recommend

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a nice spot in Austin for valentine's day for my wife, son and daughter in law. We found it at Tom and Daris' place. The property was well maintained with great directions and easy to find in a comfortable but varied neighborhood. They had actually upgraded the property a little from the pictures we saw, and the new sofa and decorations really enhanced the place. I had some important work to do throughout the weekend and the balconies and the way the space was set up allowed me to work without interference. Wifi worked without a glitch throughout. The kitchen was roomy enough for two or three to work together to cook, and the beds, linens, and overall cleanliness was excellent. The pride in ownership and passion for hospitality were evident in many small details throughout our stay. Very comfortable experience all around! One note: the driveway is steep and low clearance vehicles should park on the street. But because it is at the end of the cul de sac, street parking is plentiful and safe. I parked a new car there for three days without a problem. Sign up and enjoy a great stay.

Very pleasant, wonderful neighborhood for walking.

  • 5 of 5

Property is clean, well-maintained, nice amenities (soft sheets, a cold beer in the fridge!), great high ceilings and a nice view, comfortable and well-maintained bathrooms, good beds. Owners very responsive. Terrific location, close to everything. Loved the fireplace, perfect for the weather during our stay. Looks like it is well-outfitted for summer too. Would definitely stay again!

Nope

Not enough lights to make it safely up the "stairs" which are actually leaf covered stones that are loose up a hill. Very hazardous.

Dark inside with little to no natural light allowed in the minimal windows

Dead cockroach in downstairs bedroom, and bed is a mattress on the floor.

Live cockroach in upstairs loft "bedroom" found in my clothes .

Upstairs bathroom with dirty soap and or scum on windowsill.

Upstairs shower with zero pressure and faulty plumbing causing lots of water to come out of tub spout during "shower"

Upstairs shower does not drain so you end up standing in water to your knees.

Owner ( was he? He didn't tell me his last name) told us he was going to enter the property "if that was ok" and then didn't leave us notification if he did or didn't.

Rental car bottomed out on driveway. Too steep

Will never stay here again and frankly worried about standards of this company

Pictures are not reflective at all of the property

Extremely poor value

Owner's Response: Wow! We were totally broadsided and disheartened by this review. This guest never indicated any problem during their stay. Only 3 days before this, we received a 5 (Five) Star review from guests that want to book the property for future events. Sadly, this poor reviewer traveled from afar only to endure the cancellation of Austin City Limits due to a deluge of rain (12 inches in one night). Perhaps they have redirected some of their pain and anguish on to their review of our property. For future travelers please know that Tom and I are very dedicated in providing a quality experience and the best customer service. It is a very nice property, but rightfully not advertised or priced as an upscale home (we have one of those and it rents for 2 to 3 times the price of this one). If there should ever be a problem we have 24/7 repairmen available. The City of Austin did send a gas service man to the property for a routine visit. There was a note left on the front door. This property backs up to a green space which most people really enjoy. This could increase the incident of bugs, but we employ a regular organic pest service and have never had a complaint. Regarding the mattress being on the floor, this is grievously libel. The mattresses are (and always have been) on IKEA Malm platform bed frames. They are nice beds as one can clearly see in the photos. We promise--no surprises. We will make sure you are satisfied with your stay--just communicate your needs. We made an attempt to contact this guest after we received the review. We offered to 'make it right', but at no point were our efforts accepted. I'm sorry this guest did not have a wonderful time, but I feel it was through no fault of ours.
