About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-5)

City living and an organic environment make this apartment the perfect experience—right in the historic district of Capitol Hill, in the prestigious Lincoln Park neighborhood, a short walk or bike to everything! If we are already booked, try our 2nd floor unit: VRBO # 85729 -- it's done in the same style!

This charming 1912 corner row house is a historic renovated corner barbershop, with a private entrance, 900 square feet of sunny living space with high ceilings, full sunlight through large windows that face east, south and west. There is a bus stop on the block, and it is a ten-minute walk to the orange-line metro at Eastern Market and then just one stop to the Capitol and the beginning of the Smithsonian Mall. Take a ten to twenty minute walk to a variety of neighborhoods (including Barracks Row, Eastern Market, Pennsylvania Ave, Lincoln Park and more) that offer shops, restaurants, and services. If you love to walk, take a leisurely stroll through the historic houses and gardens of East Capitol Street and arrive at the doorstep of the Capitol. We also have bicycles for you to use-- a fun and free way to tour the city, if you are so inclined!

Step outside to stroll the quiet, charming, and safe neighborhood, or picnic on our large grassy yard amidst the scent of lilacs and forsythia. Explore the great neighborhood, which offers a wide-open tree-lined green space as well as an upscale restaurant and corner market that features Polyface Farms meats and more. Great restaurant options are everywhere-- and you can walk a few blocks to shop for groceries at Yes Organic Market and Eastern Market, plus full-size grocery store six blocks away. Take pleasure in the kind of neighborhood experience that Capitol Hill will offer at every turn. The apartment has natural heart pine wood floors and bamboo floors, organic bedding, plant-filled windowsills, and complimentary natural bath products and organic pantry items.

The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful at night. Adding to your comfort: organic cotton sheets, chlorine filtering shower head, organic cotton towels, yoga mats and instructional DVDs, and lots of leafy-green plants. You will breathe easy, stay healthy, and rest well here. There's also the convenience of wireless internet access, unlimited local and long-distance calling, a flat-panel TV with cable and DVD player, a diverse selection of DVDs, and a washer/dryer.

What makes this apartment unique

This house is a rare find in DC: a corner property with no close neighbors on three sides, so lots of windows that are open to light and air, and surrounded by a large yard and patio. The enclosed yard has an organic garden-- help yourself to tomatoes and more while you stay.

Spring Break Getaway

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed 4 nights at this rental over spring break. The apartment was clean and quiet and accommodated our three kids well with the pull out chair and couch. The owner is top notch and provides all you need to feel at home (including a nice welcome basket with snacks). The neighborhood was nice and a great starting point for biking or running. We did think it was a bit far from the metro for the kids early in the morning when it was still very cold or late in the evening after a long day. We spent more $$ on Uber than we planned :). That said, the distance from the trains and such was clearly known prior.

Wonderful apartment - great host!

  • 4 of 5

My wife and four kids stayed for 5 days. First up the host Jo is wonderful. She's great at being in communication, met us at the apartment and got us settled, left us a lovely welcome pack and was happy to do anything she could to help us. The apartment was as described in it's listing. It was very comfortable with a well stocked kitchen. Located in a lovely area, the apartment was very clean and towels and linen were all fresh. There was a small convenience store around the corner. We felt very comfortable. The only point I would mention is that it's a 15 minute walk to the Metro from the apartment which towards the end of our stay became a little exhausting for the kids so thats something to keep in mind but otherwise this is a great apartment and if we visit Washington again Jo will be our first call.

Unpleasant experience

  • 2 of 5

The host is nice and helpful. She provided useful information about the neighborhood before we checked in. And she greeted and showed us the house after we arrived. However, the 1st floor apartment turned out to be so disappointing that we had to move to a hotel later at night finally.

In short, the apartment was lack of maintenance. There was bad odor in the rooms and it cannot be removed after hours of fan running. There was also strange smell from the pillows and quilt. The bathtub was dirty. The snacks provided were approaching expiration dates. We just cannot accept a living place in such condition.

We informed the host immediately and she was sorry for that. We got a full refund and decided not to come back. It can be improved if the host pay more attention to the details of the apartment before renting it out. We hope that future guests will enjoy the stay after the apartment is renovated.

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in DC. After an action packed day, we were glad to come back to a calm relaxing home. The house was clean and worked well for a family of 4. One of my favorite memories is sitting outside watching the fire flies. The kitchen was fully equipped and we were able to cook or bbq several of the nights. Good location, we didn't have a car and didn't feel like we needed one - easy walk to the Metro. Felt very safe. Great vacation!!

Excellent and enjoyable stay

  • 5 of 5

We just came back from a great trip in DC. Thanks to this fantastic place, close to everything. The house was clean and wonderful just as described and more. It's in a safe and quiet neighborhood. We walked to store late at night and also walked to restaurants (from Jo's recommendation list of restaurants) for dinner most night. We enjoyed all our dinners, she was right on target for all her recommendation. We had no problem of finding good parking for our car everyday. One day, we even rode the bicycles that Jo provided for sightseeing.. Jo was very accommodation to all our need. We loved her welcome basket and a lot of useful stuff in the pantry. She even brought us pastries from 1 of her favorite bakery, they were real yummy. Best of all, she was quick to help me with my personal problem even after I already moved out and back at home. This is the best Vrbo and the best landlord. She provided us with a lot of good informations to get around DC. Thanks Jo! You are the best, I can't stop praise about you and your place to my friend.

Not Horrible, But Not Great

  • 2 of 5

The property was interesting, the history of it is that it used to be an old barber shop, which was really rather cool. Unfortunately we felt that it was a bit misrepresented. It was incredibly small. We had 5 guests and only one bed, 1 couch that pulled out (and was not at all comfortable), and an odd little pull out futon that reminded me of the skinny tables at the doctor's office. My teenager stayed on that and while he is skinny, it was a ridiculous size and he fell off one night.

All of the blinds did not lift or pull down, so on a couple of the windows (with no other shades or curtains) remained open and we felt a bit exposed. There was a welcome basket with a couple of sodas and some crackers, that was a nice touch, there was no ice though. As we prepared dinner that first night we weren't able to find a few things and we tried to contact the owner, but she took a really long time to communicate with us. There were no updated maps and while there was a book there to help us figure out the neighborhood, a few of the restaurants were closed (good thing we did a yelp search before attempting to go to the restaurants that were recommended by the owner). There were locked cabinets and when we asked for the codes, they didn't work on half of the locks.

It was clean, so no complaints there. One of the burners didn't work and the toaster oven was hit or miss on whether it would actually toast (or get hot). We ended up having to go and buy our own pitcher to use - there was a pitcher we were told, but it was in one of those locked cabinets that we didn't get the code to.

There weren't enough pillows for all the guests, there were exposed nails or staples in the floor, there weren't enough towels, there were no instructions (no good instructions) on how to work the television and I've got a tech-minded husband... and overall it was just all a bit of a disappointment and I wouldn't choose to stay here again. I feel like the effort was there, it wasn't like we were neglected on purpose, but it was unfortunately a total miss.

There is a nice pizza place within walking distance and there was a Safeway that was a little further of a walk, but reasonable. The metro stations were about 15 to 20 min away walking, so not terrible, but not terribly close either especially after a full day of walking around as tourists in DC.

Sorry we didn't have a better experience.
