About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-5)

City living and an organic environment make this apartment the perfect experience—right in the historic district of Capitol Hill, in the prestigious Lincoln Park neighborhood, a short walk or bike to everything! If we are already booked, try our 2nd floor unit: VRBO # 85729 -- it's done in the same style!

This charming 1912 corner row house is a historic renovated corner barbershop, with a private entrance, 900 square feet of sunny living space with high ceilings, full sunlight through large windows that face east, south and west. There is a bus stop on the block, and it is a ten-minute walk to the orange-line metro at Eastern Market and then just one stop to the Capitol and the beginning of the Smithsonian Mall. Take a ten to twenty minute walk to a variety of neighborhoods (including Barracks Row, Eastern Market, Pennsylvania Ave, Lincoln Park and more) that offer shops, restaurants, and services. If you love to walk, take a leisurely stroll through the historic houses and gardens of East Capitol Street and arrive at the doorstep of the Capitol. We also have bicycles for you to use-- a fun and free way to tour the city, if you are so inclined!

Step outside to stroll the quiet, charming, and safe neighborhood, or picnic on our large grassy yard amidst the scent of lilacs and forsythia. Explore the great neighborhood, which offers a wide-open tree-lined green space as well as an upscale restaurant and corner market that features Polyface Farms meats and more. Great restaurant options are everywhere-- and you can walk a few blocks to shop for groceries at Yes Organic Market and Eastern Market, plus full-size grocery store six blocks away. Take pleasure in the kind of neighborhood experience that Capitol Hill will offer at every turn. The apartment has natural heart pine wood floors and bamboo floors, organic bedding, plant-filled windowsills, and complimentary natural bath products and organic pantry items.

The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful at night. Adding to your comfort: organic cotton sheets, chlorine filtering shower head, organic cotton towels, yoga mats and instructional DVDs, and lots of leafy-green plants. You will breathe easy, stay healthy, and rest well here. There's also the convenience of wireless internet access, unlimited local and long-distance calling, a flat-panel TV with cable and DVD player, a diverse selection of DVDs, and a washer/dryer.

Great location for spring Capitol visit!

  • 5 of 5

Jo made it easy for us to feel at home. We have stayed at many VRBOs and this one had to be the best outfitted in terms of having anything you might need available. From books and games for rainy days or exhausted evenings to a Safeway card for grocery discounts, cooking supplies like one would have at home, and bikes- with locks! - for traveling around.

While it's a small apartment, it's well- appointed. Our two daughters slept on the pullout couch and while they grumbled a little about sharing a bed, they had plenty of space. The bedding and towels were high quality, and Jo was very responsive to any questions. The location was great for travel around the major sites - by metro, Uber, or bikes (and we tried it all). We cooked most of our dinners in and really appreciated the abundance of cooking supplies - and the grill lit on the first try!

Thanks again - highly recommend!

Owner's Response: Kristen, big thanks to you and your family for being ideal tenants -- I enjoyed having you and would host you again any time. It's always good to know the cooking supplies are appreciated and that the kitchen had some good cooks in there. Hope to cross paths again.

Nicely located, great host. Bicycles made it possible for us to visit the area without having to move the car. Recommended place.

Ideal location in Eastern Market/Capitol Hill

  • 5 of 5

What a great place. Very clean and very quiet in a great location close to Eastern Market and Capital Hill. The apartment was very charming and it was supplied with everything we would need for our weekend stay (which was a nice surprise!). An added bonus, which we didn't have time to take advantage of, are the bikes that the owner makes available to the guests. WOW - can't wait to come back and bike around the area. This is going to become the first place we will check on our future visits to DC.

Spring Break Getaway

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 5 stayed 4 nights at this rental over spring break. The apartment was clean and quiet and accommodated our three kids well with the pull out chair and couch. The owner is top notch and provides all you need to feel at home (including a nice welcome basket with snacks). The neighborhood was nice and a great starting point for biking or running. We did think it was a bit far from the metro for the kids early in the morning when it was still very cold or late in the evening after a long day. We spent more $$ on Uber than we planned :). That said, the distance from the trains and such was clearly known prior.

Wonderful apartment - great host!

  • 4 of 5

My wife and four kids stayed for 5 days. First up the host Jo is wonderful. She's great at being in communication, met us at the apartment and got us settled, left us a lovely welcome pack and was happy to do anything she could to help us. The apartment was as described in it's listing. It was very comfortable with a well stocked kitchen. Located in a lovely area, the apartment was very clean and towels and linen were all fresh. There was a small convenience store around the corner. We felt very comfortable. The only point I would mention is that it's a 15 minute walk to the Metro from the apartment which towards the end of our stay became a little exhausting for the kids so thats something to keep in mind but otherwise this is a great apartment and if we visit Washington again Jo will be our first call.

Unpleasant experience

  • 2 of 5

The host is nice and helpful. She provided useful information about the neighborhood before we checked in. And she greeted and showed us the house after we arrived. However, the 1st floor apartment turned out to be so disappointing that we had to move to a hotel later at night finally.

In short, the apartment was lack of maintenance. There was bad odor in the rooms and it cannot be removed after hours of fan running. There was also strange smell from the pillows and quilt. The bathtub was dirty. The snacks provided were approaching expiration dates. We just cannot accept a living place in such condition.

We informed the host immediately and she was sorry for that. We got a full refund and decided not to come back. It can be improved if the host pay more attention to the details of the apartment before renting it out. We hope that future guests will enjoy the stay after the apartment is renovated.
