Overview

About the property

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 7)

Exceptional, private property right on one of the most scenic routes in the country. One of few rental properties with such a privacy and yet so close to everything.

Situated on an old hilltop farm property set off by stone walls and private woods, right on Historic Old King's Highway (Route 6A), yet set well back from the road. You will enjoy quiet seclusion, yet still be only 10 minutes by car from all that Hyannis has to offer: restaurants, shopping, movies, tourist attractions and the ferry to Nantucket. Fantastic location for a first time Cape Cod visitors who would like to explore the Cape to the maximum in a short time, including 18 beaches in 15 miles radius.

A paradise for active, outdoor children with a swing set, enormous sandbox, playhouse. Ideal, too, for couples or smaller families who enjoy hearing birdsong in the morning as they sip their morning coffee on the private deck.

The restored farm kitchen keeps it original character and very well equipped. There is adjacent traditional parlor great for family board games or afternoon tea time. The living room with fireplace opens onto a spacious secluded deck. Full size bathroom has tub/shower and farm pedestal sink, and washer/dryer.

Master bedroom boasts a king bed plus a cradle for babies up to 6 months, at no extra charge. Second bedroom has 2 twin beds, while 3rd bedroom has a comfortable twin-sized bed with trundle plus a cozy built-in child's sleep nook. Beach chairs, umbrellas, sand toys on site for your use.

Savor brunch, coffee, ice cream and get your local groceries (including authentic French bread and wine) in popular Barnstable village with its authentic New England appeal, only minutes away. Short drives to major beaches (Craigville, Sandy Neck, Hyannis) as well as Hyannis Whale Watcher cruises (based out of Barnstable's Millway marina), and the Audubon nature preserve at Long Pasture. The perfect launching point to any destination from Sandwich to Wellfleet.

Keywords: Completely remodeled vintage farm house on a large lot; so many original and charming features were preserved that for one summer the house was the set for shooting a historical movie. Convenient location with easy access to all Lower Cape and Mid-Cape attractions. Free beach pass allows access in season to 18 Barnstable salt- and freshwater beaches!

About Miriam Everhart

Miriam, a European-trained architect, and Craig, a U.S. government analyst, live with their young children (3,9,11,11 and 14)in Europe (Germany this time) most of the time. For that one summer in three that they can spend in the States, they wanted the best America has to offer: Cape Cod.

Miriam Everhart purchased this farmhouse in 2009

Why Miriam Everhart chose West Barnstable

Though neither of us is originally from New England, we want our children, who don't normally live in the States, to gain a sense of American history and values by living in a place where a lot of that history started: the Pilgrims, after all, first made landfall on Provincetown's 'First Encounter' beach. The significance of America's mix of cultures is brought home to them when they attend the Wampanoag Native American Pow-wow in Mashpee every July. Beyond history, there are the uncountable facets of nature, from the beach to the bogs, and from surf critters to birds. The Cape is not a place that encourages kids to sit in front of a computer or a TV screen all day, but to get out and experience life! When the inevitable rainy day crops up, there is still plenty to do locally and, ranging farther afield, in places like Plimoth Plantation and Boston. These are places that should not be unknown to any American children!

Once we had found our diamond-in-the-rough after nearly a year's searching, we spent the entire summer of 2010 remodeling and refurnishing it, as well as re-landscaping the garden, adding flower beds and clearing brush.

Why West Barnstable? Though perhaps not as chic as Brewster, Orleans, or Osterville, West Barnstable oozes authenticity. Beyond that, we're close to it all: while the crowds sit in those mid-summer traffic jams on Route 6, we have so much right at our doorstep in Hyannis, plus we can use back roads to take us virtually anywhere else from Mashpee and Sandwich to Brewster, Orleans, and beyond.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Conveniently located to three major Cape arteries (Mid-Cape Highway Route 6; Old King's Highway - Route 6A; Route 132), our house is nonetheless quiet, private, and peaceful. We within striking distance of all major Lower and Mid-Cape attractions, beaches, plus the 'downtown' amenities of Hyannis. Want to go off Cape for a while? The Nantucket ferries dock only 15 minutes away, while a 35-minute drive puts you in Wood's Hole to catch the Vineyard boats.

Whale watching? Millway's 'Hyannis' whale watching boat ties up about 4 miles from us: when your kids see a pod of mother whales and their calves diving under the boat and resurfacing on the other side, they'll talk of nothing else for weeks. Clamming and critter collecting are big draws in Barnstable Harbor at low tide.

There are big draws for grown-ups, too, including nightlife in Hyannis and antique places and fine arts & crafts boutiques galore all along 6A. Deep-sea fishing is available from multiple locations, rent a kayak, enjoy the gentle waves along the Bay or the wilder surf of the Atlantic: you can do it all in a single week!

As for culinary attractions, the Cape has it all, from the simplest clam & ice cream shacks to world-class cuisine. Local produce (think corn, tomatoes, zucchini, berries, peaches) coupled with local seafood, along with every imaginable item at huge grocery stores like Stop 'n' Shop make dining in a treat, too. If you're a native dry-lander, one single clambake or lobster bisque should change your mind (and your palate) forever.

For a big-city night out, Boston is easily accessible by car : park at Quincy or Braintree and take the T to all downtown destinations.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Overall, we had a great time and more importantly, our little one loved it... You were right the house and the yard are very toddler friendly... As a mom, I also appreciated most beddings and blankets being out of cotton... and comfortable pillows.

Charming Blue House

  • 5 of 5

We loved this home! It was centrally located to explore upper and lower cape over our week long get away to cape cod. The home has three bedrooms upstairs that are perfect. Our oldest especially loved the curtains that hid the tucked away bed in the kids room. Between a fun sandbox in the front and swing set in the back yard, with lounge chairs for reading, while the kids play, we would have been content just staying at the house all week! A great back yard deck with a full table made for dinners outside a breeze. When the sun goes down, the fire pit serves as a great gathering place to tell stories and create memories.

Be sure to read the history of the house that Craig and Miriam provide in the welcome packet, very informative and fun to think about how the cape was many years ago. Craig and Miriam are excellent and responsive hosts! They have created a wonderfully charming home that our girls didn't want to leave, pleading on the last day to stay in the 'blue house'! We can't wait to come back.

Beautiful time in Cape Cod

  • 5 of 5

We had such a lovely stay at this farmhouse in Barnstable. It was me, my husband, my 5 year old daughter and 2 year old son. The place is cozy and welcoming, and very clean upon arrival. The kitchen was stocked with all of the supplies we needed. We really took advantage of the beach pass and enjoyed the Craigville beaches, as well as the bay beaches. Gray's Beach in West Yarmouth was our favorite during low tide! My children absolutely loved the sandbox with all of the toys. We did have many mosquitoes around, especially towards the evening, so we did not stay outside when it got later. Overall it was a wonderful stay!

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

The house was clean, quiet, and very comfortable. The landscaping was very well maintained. The homeowners and property manager were very responsive. The home was centrally located, and we were able to day trip everywhere we wanted to go. No complaints at all, and I wouldn't hesitate recommending this property to friends or family.

Great house, good location. Had everything we needed.

  • 5 of 5

I found the property to be everything we needed for both of my married children and their families. The location was easy to find and.very convenient to shopping and dining in Hyannis, yet we were able to enjoy the quieter side or 6A. We used the beach pass several times and the kids loved Millway beach. I found the house to be well appointed with dishes, glassware, and cookware. We even made cupcakes one day. We certainly would love to stay again next year!

The property was wonderfully landscaped with a place for everyone to find their own piece of fun!

  • 4 of 5

This vacation home was perfectly suited to our family of 5plus 2 grandparents. There was enough space for everyone to spread out and enjoy the vacation in their own way with a spacious family room to bring us all together. Some of the details needed to be addressed such as light bulbs and some drippy shower heads but these were remedied and not an issue. Having the washer and dryer right gets made a huge difference in allowing us to stay on top of laundry so we didn't come home to loads and loads to do. The fire pit was great though may need to bring in more fire wood as there wasn't enough for more than one or two nights. Plenty of storage for items brought such as food and kitchen goods. We had great access (and took full advantage of) to all the cape offers including fishing, beaches (LOVED having the beach pass 😁) Smitty's ice cream, movies, shopping, mini golfing and the inflatable water park. The bedrooms were fairly comfortable though only 2 had AC. Luckily the weather wasn't too hot. The only suggestion is that you could tell the house had been closed up for awhile and needed to be aired out but after a couple days of windows open etc. things improved. The house is on a main road so we weren't comfortable havin our 11 and 13 year old ride bikes on the street but the houseis set back significantly from the road to feel private and secluded. Plenty of yard space and the photos online accurately depict the size of the property. Overall, we would definitely stay again! (We stayed week of July 4th 2017).

Owner's Response: Thank you for your input and your kind review. I am glad you had good time and enjoy your stay. I am very sorry for the light bulbs, but we are fully booked during the summer seoson and the cleaning crew comes during daylight so they have no way to know (or the time to check) every light. I hope you found the drawer in the kitchen which is labeled "light bulbs" and were able to replace them. As for not having enough wood for the fire pit, I am sorry for that as well, but we are not responsible for restoring the wood supply every week. Thanks pointing this out - I will note this in our webside description, wiith all the places that sell some in 5 min drive. Yes, you are right the house was winterized, but it was rented for few weeks before your stay and there were no complains about any odor. However, there was a record heavy storm few days before your arrival (the rt. 6a in front of the house was in emergency state for few hours) and part of the basement got some water. That was the reason for the heavy air in the house,I think, and I apology for it. Thank you again beeing such a great tenant and thanks again for staying with us! Hope see you next seoson. Enjoy rest of your summer! Sincerely, Miriam
