About Victoria Gowan
My husband and I are retired and enjoy traveling to this, our second home. We hope you enjoy it as well.
Victoria Gowan purchased this Cabin in 2001
Why Victoria Gowan chose Franklin
We designed and built this home in Cherokee Landing because of its unique beauty and location. It's only 1.25 hours from the Ashville airport, 30-45 minutes from Highlands/Cashiers, 45 minutes from Cherokee and Harrah's Casino, 25 minutes from Nantahala White Water Rafting Center, 15 minutes to the town of Franklin, NC and all of the antique malls, gem mining opportunities, shopping, and restaurants.
What makes this Cabin unique
Fishing from the river bank, or fly fishing from the rocks in the river, while watching the grandchildren tubing down the river make this a unique location. This is a family friendly ATV loving neighborhood. PS. Free long distance and WiFi provided at our log home!

My husband and boys and I had a great time away for Thanksgiving this year! We loved the cabin and it had all we needed. Very clean, comfortable and cozy. We enjoyed the board games and family time. If we go to Franklin again, we’ll definitely want to stay here.
Great to hear that the family enjoyed all the River Bear Cabin had to offer. Many of our guests enjoy the wintertime in our NC mountains. Yes, the board games are available, books to read, movies saved in the Dish ON Demand. What about outdoors? Sixty three acres to walk, fantastic common area with fire pit, gazebo, pavilion, bathhouse and children's playground.
Please come again! Many of our guest are repeat customers. We are overlooking the Little Tennessee River and it is a quick walk down to the river which is great for fishing (no license required), swimming, tubing. Our deck overlooks it all. Be sure to review all our photos on our VRBO site.

Fabulous mountain lodging with river view and access
Great communication with owners, who are very gracious and accommodating!!
As owners, we have been traveling to our custom log home for almost 20 years. We update often (new picnic table, new mobile phone booster system, etc) in order to improve our rental. Our renters suggested a way to improve our mountain views, and we responded by acting on their recommendation. After all, we enjoy our log cabin often and always want to make sure that a great time is enjoyed by all!
SECOND TIME AROUND AT RIVER BEAR. I THINK THE GRANS LOVED IT EVEN MORE. WONDERFULL GET AWAY FOR ALL.
Thanks for being our guests again.... Many renters come a second, third or more times. Whether you are a couple or a family, River Bear has something for everyone. The river is amazing; the common area is enjoyable day or night, and th house itself? Very comfortable and inviting.....
Perfect place to relax and get away
Great location, well maintained and equipped home. Accommodating owners. Anxious to come back.
These guests have already booked another stay this fall. We stay often at our custom log home and do everything we can to maintain & even upgrade our cabin. Looking forward to hosting these guests once more!
Clean, comfy cabin in the mountains
We really enjoyed our stay in the cabin. There was plenty of room for our family of 5 (13 yr old girl and 8 & 9 yr old boys) to spread out for alone time or gather for family time. The large dining room table accommodated our family plus our parents who were staying nearby. We did not use the picnic table on the deck but found it cool that it also converts to a bench for extra seating. We loved having a fully stocked kitchen and the grill. We made several meals at home. It was also really convenient to have the washer and dryer available. The kids really liked having their own beds and bathroom near their rooms. We enjoyed the quiet evenings on the deck listening to the rushing river water although we could not actually see the river due to thick trees. There are pros and cons to that - we thought we'd have a river view but also felt pretty secluded and private. We were a little disappointed since we thought based on the description and reviews that we'd see the river. The trek to the river wasn't too bad but it is steep as are all of the roads in the neighborhood. My FWD SUV navigated the single- lane, gravel roads without too much trouble though. We were also disappointed in the river itself. We have had a lot of flooding at home and heard from locals there has been heavier than usual rainfall in the Smokies also. The river was running too fast to safely play in. There also weren't good spots for entering and exiting the river if you wanted to tube as mentioned in other reviews. The fishing was also not as desired. We had 4 people fish the river using multiple baits on several different day at different times of day and didn't get a single bite. The boys did enjoy the playset and flat, grassy areas by the river.
We didn't have any trouble finding the cabin or getting in once we arrived. The owners left great instructions. The central location to Franklin and Bryson City was nice. Bryson was a little further away but we liked the vibe there more. We ate at a great Italian restaurant and sandwich shop - sorry, can't remember the names! Lots of cute local shops also. Due to the winding mountains roads, we did spend at least 20 minutes driving to get to pretty much anything but that comes with the privacy and seclusion of the cabin that we were looking for. I only mention it so if someone doesn't want to spend lots of time driving, you might look closer to the towns.
Overall, we had a great vacation and would definitely recommend this cabin!
Dave & I really appreciate such a comprehensive review of River Bear Cabin. We are happy that there was room for all the family. With 28 ft ceilings in the gathering room and 16 ft ceilings in the two upstairs bedrooms, the rooms seem even larger.
The summer view is loaded with trees and it is, indeed, difficult to see the river. The best times to see the river from River Bear is winter, of course, and even spring and fall. It has been a very rainy season this summer and water from upstream has caused the river to run faster. Most summers, the river is low & slow. The same goes for fishing.....if the water is rushinig, the fishing is difficult.
Excellent comments about the drive to "civilization." We are centrally located to many exciting towns, such as, Cherokee, Highlands, Cashiers, Bryson City, and, of course, Franklin. Franklin is 20 minutes at most, and the other towns are 35-50 minutes away, but well worth the trip (and yes, on curvey mountain roads.) We provide many brochures in the cabin about trout fishing, horseback riding, zip lines, escape rooms, whitewater rafting, antiquing, and great food. When one books our custom log home, Dave or I would be happy to make suggestions about activities for young and old.
We have many guests come back for another adventure, and hope that this family will consider us another time!
Great location, beautiful scenery and wonderful neighbors!
