About Victoria Gowan

My husband and I are retired and enjoy traveling to this, our second home. We hope you enjoy it as well.

Victoria Gowan purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Victoria Gowan chose Smoky Mountains

We designed and built this home in Cherokee Landing because of its unique beauty and location. It's only 1.25 hours from the Ashville airport, 30-45 minutes from Highlands/Cashiers, 45 minutes from Cherokee and Harrah's Casino, 25 minutes from Nantahala White Water Rafting Center, 15 minutes to the town of Franklin, NC and all of the antique malls, gem mining opportunities, shopping, and restaurants.

What makes this cabin unique

Fishing from the river bank, or fly fishing from the rocks in the river, while watching the grandchildren tubing down the river make this a unique location. This is a family friendly ATV loving neighborhood. PS. Free long distance and WiFi provided at our log home!

Guestbook comments from the owner

I am Victoria, the owner of River Bear Cabin, and just arrived at my custom log home and read some review in our guest book. Here is a terrific one:

"It's early sunday morning, cool with a light fog. In a few hours we will be on our way. We spent a week here with our 92 year old mother and good friends. It's hard not to write and not be sentimental. So many first time memories and experiences happened here....

Granda Betty, "mom" is what she's called, was awestuck with your home. She loved your high ceilings and home decor, often refering to it as a "castle". Betty went gem mining and cleaned two buckets at Rose Creek Gem Mine - loved it! Our friends took Betty tubing on your river! The more rough and quick the water, the more she squealed and laughed. She even said she would go again! Betty also took a motorcycle ride down to the river, where we enjoyed fishing, picnic dinner, and a lovely fire while we enjoyed good conversation and the soothing sounds of the Little Tennessee river.

We enjoyed going through the Franklin Gem Museum with over 6,000 specimens. We regularly went to the fresh fruit & vegetable stand on Rte 28 in Cowee - couldn't believe it - boiled peanuts!

Our friends were able to celebrate their 9th wedding anniversary this week - Magical! The went sight-seeing by motorcycle and were able to make memories to cherish. We took a 4 plus hour train ride in Bryson City. Well worth doing, beautiful views of the Nantahala river, the mountains, waterfaulls, banjo music and story telling. We also enjoyed a free concert, "Pickin" music in downtown Franklin at the Gazebo. Everywhere we went we were met with friendly and knowledgeable staff and local people.

Thanks you so very much for sharing your beautiful and comfortable home with us. We felt pampered and although there was six of us, we all could find quiet time when we wanted it. You gifted us with precious memories that we'll hold dear for a lifetime....Thank You!

Peaceful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is great! There is everything you need! Loved that it was close to river and that it a great porch. We fished, went on a hike and relaxed. Loved the fireplace. The only thing missing that we would like is a fire pit right outside the house but we had fun without it! We did use fire pit at the common grounds one day and loved it! The owners are nice and helpful and answer email very quickly. We would love to be back in summertime!

Beautiful Cabin on Little Tennessee River

  • 5 of 5

We had a blast catching fish and tubing in the Little Tennessee River just at the bottom of the hill at the cabin. The cabin has everything you need to make your own meals, full washer and dryer, and comfy beds. Cell phones don't work well in the cabin but they have placed a booster and it helps but we were on vacation so didn't really need our phones too much. We were able to have a fire and s'mores by the river. There was plenty of firewood on site so you don't have to buy any. We hiked all around the Cherokee Landing grounds to see deer and squirrel. There is a suspension bridge just right up the road from cabin that the kids had fun going over. Bryson City, Nantahala Outdoor Center (whitewater rafting and zip lining), Smokies Mountain NP for some hikes to see waterfalls, and Highland for more falls (Cullasaja, Dry, Bridal, and Bust Your Butt Falls) are not to far from the cabin and make great day trips. Like other reviews said make sure to stop in Franklin at a grocery store or the Walmart before heading to cabin. Victoria was prompt with any questions we had. If we are in the area again we definitely will see if Victoria has room for us!

The one thing we wished the cabin had was a table on the deck to have meals on.

Owner's Response: Victoria & I are delighted to hear that you all had a wonderful time at our custom log home, River Bear Cabin. All the activities you described make for a very fun vacation. There is so much to see & do, all within a 30-45 minute trip. River Bear is ideal for any of the seasons. Many of our guests request a wintertime week or two. Of course, spring & summer are perfect with cool nights and pleasant days. And, of course, the fall leaf changes are a very beautiful and busy rental time. So, come back whenever you can.....we have many repeat guests. And thanks for the great idea to put a table on the 12X45 foot deck for food and such. We will look into that when we return in a few weeks.

A River Runs Through It

  • 5 of 5

Most beautiful stretch of the Little Tennessee River for miles! Perfect for those that love to fish and play in and near the river. The cabin is very cozy and comfortable and appropriately decorated with bear and fishing art throughout. It is well stocked with everything you could possibly need except food. Franklin is less than 30 minutes away if you need groceries and a convenience store is 10 minutes. The large common area is beautifully maintained. It is a good aerobic workout to scale the steep slope to the cabin from the river and a nice walk along the river and and community road for those who like the exercise (me). For those that don't (my husband), it's a short drive down the hill to the river. Dave and Victoria were very helpful and friendly. We hope to return again when the trout are plentiful!

Owner's Response: Melody's kind words reflect the fact that this is our second home which we visit & enjoy at least four to five times a year. And, yes, we agree that our community, Cherokee Landing, is on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Little Tennessee River. Victoria designed the log home, and we work hard to make sure that all items are in place so that our guests have a most enjoyable vacation. River Bear Cabin is our only rental and we take pride in ownership. We wish every vacationer has a terrific time at our mountain retreat!

Owner's Response: Donna M. offered a "short & sweet" review and we are very grateful for the kind words. This log home is our second home and we have lovely art work on the walls, interesting antiques, and fun fish & bear items that decorate our cabin. Everything we can think of is provided. We travel to our cabin between four & five times a year not only to enjoy it but to make sure that all is in good repair and ready for another mountain vacation family. Summer, winter, spring or fall, renters enjoy Rive Bear Cabin, the river, the community common area and the surrounding towns and activities. We love it and hope that all our guests do, too!

Mountain vacay

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five just returned from a week spent in this beautiful cabin. The cabin is just as described in the VRBO posting. It is very clean and well stocked with everything you need. We loved the common area where we fished, tubed, and picnicked. The surrounding area is beautiful as well. We visited several waterfalls, the Wayah Bald fire tower (which has a spectacular view), Rufus Morgan Trail, and the towns of Highlands, Cashiers, Franklin, and Nantahala. Lake Nantahala is one of the prettiest lakes we have seen with it's emerald green water. We used the grill at the cabin to prepare several meals and also dined at Motor Co. Grill, which has great burgers! While in Franklin, we visited the town square, the gem museum, and the Franklin Historical Museum, all of which were very interesting. Overall, this was one of the best mountain vacations we have ever had. Our whole family agrees that we would happily return to River Bear Cabin and this area of North Carolina.

Owner's Response: Now this family really knows how to vacation! They took advantage of all the surrounding area to entertain their family. The various activities are for all ages and likes. And don't forget the weather. When it is 95 degrees in, say, Atlanta or Tampa the high in the mountain may reach 85 with virtually no humidity....and the lows by mourning are in the 50's! And that is all summer long! Come and see for yourselves......

Wonderful Get-Away!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is just beautiful--beautiful view, comfortable and truly away from it all but close enough to civilisation if you need it. My husband, daughter, and grandson and myself all enjoyed all the amenities. I would truly like to visit again during the warmer months of the year. Thank you for sharing your wonderful vacation home with us!

Owner's Response: Many couples & families enjoy coming to our cabin in the wintertime. The chance of snow, the peace and beauty are always there. But the spring and summer offer so many activities which involve the outdoors. One of our busiest times in in the fall when the leaves are if one wishes to come and stay in our custom log home in the fall months, book early.....
