About Melissa Lawrence

We are Kailua locals who love to travel ourselves. Our friend Petra Evers is our property manager. Petra is originally from Holland but has been living in Kailua for 20 years. She speaks english, dutch and spanish fluently. We live down the street and will be available to you.

Melissa Lawrence purchased this studio in 2013

Why Melissa Lawrence chose East Oahu

We feel fortunate to have found this home since it is in a great location. It's a quiet, safe neighborhood on a dead end street so there's no through traffic. It sits up on the side of a hill so it catches all the tradewinds and keeps life cool. It's an easy walk to one of the prettiest beaches in all of Hawaii! The park at the bottom of the hill has a nice walking path, big trees for shade and open spaces for volleyball games, etc. Downtown Kailua is about a 20 minute walk from the house, or 5 min drive. The house has 3 stories with this studio located on first floor.

What makes this studio unique

This property is located in a peaceful neighborhood right by Kailua Beach Park, a great park for BBQ's and big get-togethers with friends and family. There's no traffic like on the other side of the island, and Kailua is a quaint little town with a good variety of restaurants and shopping. For night life, there are fun little bars in Kailua town, or it's a short drive to Waikiki. Of course there are tons of options for activities, no matter what the weather is!

Great Location

  • 3 of 5

We stayed here for a couple of nights on a stopover on Oahu... The Studio is spacious and comfortable and in a great location! Although the studio is well stocked with respect to appliances, the basics like tea, coffee, milk, etc are not provided. The lanai is a lovely morning hangout, surrounded by lush garden and very quiet in the evenings! Really appreciated the local information and travel guide provided and Julianne has made an effort to make her guests feel very welcome. We would stay on the 2nd floor next time as we could hear the footsteps above us.

Very happy!

  • 5 of 5

The property was really great, with just a short walk to the beach. Kailua Beach was the closest, but we fell in love with Lanikai Beach which was just a few miles up the road. Overall, very clean and quiet rental, perfectly secluded.

Not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

Let me start with the positive. The bed was comfortable. It was definitely secluded......

The owners were in the process of selling and by the time this is printed it should have new owners. Maybe things have changed........

There was mold on the shower curtain liner. The bathroom rug in the picture of the bathroom was filthy. There were two lights out in the bathroom and the fan in there was coated in dust. There weren't any towels racks to hang your towels on in the bathroom. We dried ours on the chairs in the kitchen after our shower. Lots of leftover toiletries from prior tenants.....

The pot holders in the kitchen had lots of crusty food on them. When we left I put them in with the laundry. Freezer was full of crumbs. Most of the dishes, coffee cups and glasses had chips in them. We could have used more than one dish towel. Lots of left over stuff in the kitchen cabinets.....

We did not mention any of this to the owner since they had only 3 weeks till their escrow closed. All they had to do was look around to see the needs of the little things that could have made this a great place to stay.

I would not recommend this place to anyone unless things have changed.

The rug and the daybed in the unit both had spots on them. The wands that adjusted the blinds were missing. Needless to say we didn't think it was as clean as other people stated......

Be sure to bring a small flashlight and take it with you if you are returning after dark. When you get to the bottom of the stairs at night it's very, very dark.

We used to live in the islands and know that it is hard to keep things clean and fresh looking due to the salt water but this seemed to be neglect due the their upcoming sale.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry to hear you were not completely satisfied with your stay. I am the new owner of this property and felt it was important I respond. I purchased this property because of it's excellent location. I hope you enjoyed that it is a 3 minute walk to one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and a 5 minute drive to our cute little Kailua town. And hopefully, you took advantage of the surrounding hiking trails and bike paths. Overall, the property has been very well maintained but clearly there are many things that may have been overlooked during the transition. I am grateful you have brought them to my attention. I have been involved for less than 2 weeks now and have remedied most things you have listed and the others are now my top priority. I frequently stay in VRBO properties myself and realize what a difference little things can make. I sincerely hope you will consider staying with us again and ask that you contact me directly next time so I can be sure your stay in Hawaii is everything you dreamed of. With much Aloha, Melissa

Spacious studio with great amenities and close to the beach!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed 5 nights at the Secluded Hideaway. The studio is very spacious, well laid out, and clean. The bed and linens were good quality and all the furnishings are in great condition. Julianne provided detailed instructions prior to our arrival and there was also a helpful FAQ sheet in the studio. WiFi was good, A/C was strong, and cable TV included premium channels.

The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans, dishware, and utensils. There were also some pantry supplies either provided by the owners or left by other renters including cooking oil, seasonings, condiments, pasta, rice, etc., which were handy to have.

The lanai and backyard was private and a great spot to have lunch or a snack. We were happy to have the use of a high quality Weber gas BBQ (similar to one we have back home) and used it to grill marinated kalbi we bought from Hibachi in town. The retractable clothesline was also great to dry our swimsuits after coming back from the beach.

We had the use of a washer and dryer in the garage, as well as access to a variety of beach gear. We made use of the beach chairs and umbrella every day. There were also coolers, boogie boards, snorkel gear, and inflatable rings. Julianne also provided 2 large beach towels for use during our stay.

The location of studio is convenient. It's less than a 5-minute walk to Kailua Beach and a very short drive to Lanikai Beach. We found ourselves at Lanikai Beach almost every day since it was so easy to get there. It was also an easy drive into Kailua town.

Communication with Julianne was smooth and she always responded promptly. She is very kind and accommodating and respects your privacy. It was a joy to make the Secluded Hideway our home base and I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

The location and property was everything we expected it to be based on the pictures and information provided. The town was a great break away from our stay in Honolulu and a nice transition to a more relaxing vacation away from the hustle and bustle.
