About Byron and Kelly Harker
Hello, we are Byron and Kelly Harker from Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada. We have had the opportunity to travel widely over the years, and have always enjoyed returning to France. In 2003 we decided to sell our home in Vancouver and move to France. We discovered the delightful town of La Charité-sur-Loire in Burgundy and immediately fell in love with the town and the area. In 2004 we opened the first of our vacation rentals and currently have five such rentals in the centre of this medieval town. We enjoy the many festivals in town and the area throughout the year. We are close enough to Paris to 'pop up' for the day. We enjoy sharing our love of the area with our guests from all over the world.
Byron and Kelly Harker purchased this Apartment in 2003
What makes this Apartment unique
La Charité-sur-Loire is south of the rain and north of the heat and as a result has very enjoyable weather. Our vacation rentals are in the centre of town and you are able to walk out your front door and enjoy the many bakeries, cafes, restaurants and boutiques. The Loire River is two blocks away and it has lovely beaches and walking paths along the riverbank. There is canoeing and kayaking on the river. We are close the wine areas of Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire where you can meet the wine makers and enjoy tasting their wonderful wines. The castles of the Loire Valley are a two hour drive from us and make an enjoyable day trip. La Charité-sur-Loire is becoming an art, book and music cultural centre and as such there are many festivals throughout the year.

La Charité in the canicule
Great experience, very close to market, historic sites, the apartment is amazing. Lots of space, all amenities, rooms are cozy and charming.
Thank you for your lovely review. It was a pleasure to have you stay with us! We hope to see you again next year
This was our second stay with the Harkers who are exceptional hosts. Previous was in the Benedictine, this one was with another couple. This apartment was spacious, clean and well equipped. A third couple occupied the Benedictine and the Lucarne was the communal gathering place. Byron's town tour was the highlight of our stay. Recommendations for where to shop for dinner (traiteur and new bio market) were spot on. Between them, a couple of the boucheries, the convenience store and the patisserie 2 steps away we had our evening light dinners. We have stayed in many gites in France and this one beats all for convenience of shopping on foot. The restaurant that Byron recommended (Auberge De La Poule Noire) was one of the best meals that we had in three weeks in France. We also enjoyed Le Bouchon de Loire and La Sauvette. Parking was convenient and easy(and free) in one of the many town lots. Highly recommend.
It was a pleasure to see you again. Thank you for bringing along your friends!
We really thought that the rental was very nice. In the middle of town so there are many options as far as restaurants and bakeries. You will need to be able to climb stairs and do lots of ducking your head if you are Tall. The people of the town are friendly and Kelly suggested a great wine tour which we enjoyed immensely.
Spacious, clean, comfortable, unique accommodation. Located in the centre of Charite, this ancient building has been renovated with TLC. This apartment has 2 floors and rooftop. The bed was comfortable, bathrooms modern, and the kitchen had all the conveniences a cook needs. Bakeries, butchers, and shopping is just steps away. By far the highlight of this lovely accommodation was the rooftop balcony that overlooks the magnificent Eglise Norte Dame next door and the rooftops of the town. We spent the early evening up there all 3 days. The hosts gave an orientation and were a great resource for what to see and do in the area. We recommend this VRBO and will return
Great gite - Great Cycling
We stay in Byron and Kelly's lovely, spacious gite for a week. We are cyclistes and rode out everyday in a different direction on small roads with almost no traffic, thru beautiful countryside. Afterwards we would come home to hot showers and a cool apartment. The gite was in the middle of town convenient to everything from bars, cafes and bakeries to a well-stocked market. There are many excellent restaurants in La Charite also. The gite is beautifully furnished with everything you could need, and Kelly and Byron were so friendly and helpful. The church bells just added that special touch, too.
We are happy you enjoyed your stay in our Lucarne Suite. The cycling trails are all close by and in good condition. Happily the church bells only ring during the day and not at night. It was a pleasure to meet both of you! We hope to see you here again soon.
Wine tasting, visit châteaux nearby. We have four bicycles for rent for 15€ per day each including helmets.
