About Maria Demello
My husband and I lived in Guanajuato for many years and loved living there, however, due to the nature of our professions we had to relocate. We come back to Guanajuato every chance we get but when we are not there, we like to share our place with visiting travelers. Since we both love to travel, we try to provide our guests with the same standards of excellence that we expect when we travel.
Maria Demello purchased this House in 1997
Why Maria Demello chose Zona Centro
La Malagueña is truly a magical house. There is no other house in town quite like ours. The architecture is so unusual that it's difficult to describe but every room is filled with character and style. There are plants everywhere in the house, even in the bathrooms. The rooftop is a peaceful oasis with more than 100 plants and a great view of the mountains, Plaza San Roque, the University of Guanajuato, the Mercado that make you feel you're on top of the world. Our location is unbeatable! You are in the center of everything. You don't even have to go out of the house to enjoy Guanajuato because the vibrancy of the city comes to you. When you open the balcony doors to the plaza, you let in the festivities and can hear the concerts, view the performances, sing along with the troubadours or simply people watch as you enjoy a glass of wine or a Margarita.
What makes this House unique
* Flexible check-in and check-out. No set policy unless we have other guests arriving the same day. * Bilingual administrator who is only a call away for any needs or recommendations and 24/7 for emergencies. * We offer great bilingual walking tours of Guanajuato with historical, cultural, and social insights of the downtown and less know but as important sites outside the center of town.

We came for Rest and Relaxation. This large home was beautifully appointed, full of charm overlooking a plaza and walking distance to el Jardín major, university of GTO, Teatro Juárez and many eateries.
Great stay, very roomy. My first time traveling in May which I found out its the hottest month. Box fans helped to keep the bedrooms cool, no a/c but cool nights.
One bedroom didn’t have a fan and the owner was nice enough to buy another one for the extra bedroom. Great location, near plaza de la Paz and Mercado.
Enchanting home on Plaza San Fernando!
I spent a total 8 nights in this lovely home! 4 by myself before heading to San Miguel de Allende with my sister and brother in law and then the 3 of us returning for another 4 nights! Everything was smooth from Maria's responses beginning to end, Sote's greetings and helpful instruction and Manuel's on time transfers too and from the airport in Leon and San Miguel de Allende! The location was perfect for exploring everything that Guanajuato has to offer and the house was a delight to return to. We loved hanging out in the living room drinking coffee in the morning, listening and watching the plaza come alive! I had been trying to book this property to coincide with an annual visit to family in San Miguel but never seemed to find it available! I finally lucked out and I am glad I did! Thank you Maria for sharing your enchanting home!
We stayed in this beautiful home for two weeks this February and thoroughly enjoyed both the property and the wonderful city of Guanajuato. The home was well appointed and cared for with attention given to the comfort and enjoyment of guests. A well equiped kitchen, comfortable beds and beautiful bedding and towels, not to mention the huge livingroom with its French doors onto San Fernando square. The pictures do not do it justice. The very best part was the third floor terrace with its gorgeous views and beautiful flowering plants. The perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine and watch evening fall over this remarkable city. This is a very energetic city with 30,000 students attending its University, music is everywhere as is art and culture. The housekeeper Sote was very pleasant and helpful and our host Maria offered wonderful advice on restaurants, sites and day trips. We loved our visit to this beautiful city and would return. Thanks so much, Sheila and Tim
Wonderful Old House on Plaza
We throughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful home on Plaza de San Fernando. The location is a short walk to the heart of downtown Guanajuato where you will find restaurants, performers, and artists displaying their work. Most other sites are walkable as well. The home is well stocked with plenty of room. There is a very nice roof deck with beautiful views of the city and lots of plants. The bedrooms are comfortable and spacious with in suite bathrooms. The house is at least 150 years old and has a lot of character. There are creaky wood floors and exposed walls from the original construction. (We were told that it was part of a large hacienda.) The master bedroom is up a spiral staircase so it is a bit of a climb and not for someone who has mobility issues. There is a bedroom on the first floor, but there are stairs from the street to the house proper.
The city of Guanajuato is an amazing place. We have been to many cities and towns in Mexico and can’t think of any better than this. It’s clean, safe, and has an excellent climate. Guanajuato played a very important part in the Mexican Revolution and today’s citizens take a great deal of pride in their city. We can’t wait to return.
Wonderful apartment with so much character. Great location.
The negatives: Lighting inside the apartment is very dim. The stove did not work. We never go hot water in the downstairs bathroom. Television also a no-go.
We're glad to know you liked the house and its wonderful location. It’s unfortunate that your stay was not optimal as we do everything in our power to make our house as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for our guests.
I'll follow by addressing your list of negatives, and point out that with better communication on your part, some of these issues could have been resolved while you were still at the house.
Stove not working & no hot water in downstairs bathroom: After your departure, our administrator realized that the house was out of gas. For that reason the stove didn't work and the downstairs bathroom didn’t have any hot water. In Mexico, we can’t possibly know when we’re out of gas since the tanks have no measurement to indicate that they’re empty. During your check-in, there was gas because our administrator turned-on the stove to show you how it worked and there wasn't a problem, therefore, sometime during your stay the gas ran out. This issue could’ve easily been resolved if you had contacted our administrator or me to let us know. Moreover, on the day our administrator was at the house to check-in on you and water the plants, you didn’t mention any of these issues to her. Unfortunately, we can’t correct problems that come up if we’re not aware of them.
Television not working: After your departure, our administrator checked the TV and noticed the antenna was damaged, probably by a recent storm. For that reason you didn't have TV reception. I apologize for this inconvenience. We’ve already bought a new antenna and this issue has been resolved.
Dim light: We prefer subtle lighting in the house, however, we have lamps to complement the fixture lighting in case our guests would like to read or require additional light.
Thank you for your comments as we can all learn from them.
Other Activities: House located in the heart of downtown Guanajuato within walking distance of the major cultural venues, historic monuments, touristic attractions.
