About the property

The Z's Retreat is your 'home away from home' near Yosemite in Historic Mariposa

The Z's Retreat is our chance to share our wonderful historic town of Mariposa and our majestic 'backyard' which is Yosemite National Park. We were fortunate enough to find a house in town and began our project. We are very excited about sharing our quaint historic town with travelers! And of course our beautiful 'backyard'! Our home is fully furnished with a Queen bed in each bedroom. The bathroom features a tub/shower combo and a pedestal sink. The living room has comfy couches and a electric fireplace to give it that cozy feeling. The kitchen is complete with a stove/oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, coffee maker, blender, toaster, pots/pans, dishes/utensils, some spices and paper products. We provide a stack washer/dryer. There is a covered carport and ample parking. The backyard is fenced and we are animal long as your animal is friendly! The best part is a huge back deck to BBQ & picnic on in the evenings or enjoy your morning coffee on! The neighborhood is very quiet, so this is not the place for loud! It is the perfect place to come 'home' to after a day in Yosemite. But, please take the time to enjoy our town! The Visitors Center is is located at 5158 Hwy. 140. You can go to the website for info on local events as well as planning a trip to Yosemite.

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from within walking distance of the house. The courthouse is just a few blocks away as is the Museum, Post Office, and the Yarts bus stop to take you to Yosemite. Pioneer Market is also close by and you can find almost anything there!

About Cindy and John Zurilgen

We grew up in the central valley in the small farming community of Chowchilla, Ca. We were married in Aug. of 1982 and started our family in 1987. We now have 3 wonderful children. We decided to relocate to the mountains in 1999. We found Mariposa by chance and fell in love with the area and decided to raise our kids here. Two of our kids are off on their own adventures after graduating college and we have added two other wonderful people to our family. Our third child is finishing High School in 2015. We are very excited to provide a place for families to visit our wonderful historic little town as well as the vast beauty that is Yosemite National Park. Our photo is a rare shot on Christmas Day at Glacier Point when there was no snow! Dec.25, 2011. Our son Alec with Rebekah, Our daughter Ashlynn, Our daughter Aubriana with James, and us, Cindy & John.

Why Cindy and John Zurilgen chose Yosemite Area

To own a house in town was a rare opportunity to make our dreams of having a vacation rental come true. This house is located in the heart of Historic Mariposa with all its history and culture. A quiet neighborhood is a perfect retreat after being in Yosemite all day. Walk around town or just relax and enjoy the large deck in the back...your choice. Or spend a day exploring right here in Mariposa!

What makes this house unique

Close to Yosemite! Quiet, secluded, nice views over rooftops, older charm, which makes it feel comfy. Makes you go back in time just a little. Very close to many historic places. Check with our visitors center for all the local happenings. Lots of summer music at the Art Park, yearly events such as Butterfly Days, Mariposa County Fair, Carter Ranch Music Festival, Blazin' Hog BBQ and Zydeco Festival, Summer Fest (Suds and Sausage), Tomato Fest, too many to mention!

Guestbook comments from the owner

John & Cindy:

Just wanted to say Thank You for allowing me and my family to stay in your rental during our special time. Its such a beautiful place, so peaceful and serene. Morning coffee on the deck was wonderful. The view of the mountains from the deck is amazing. The kids loved playing games and sitting out at the table under the stars just talking and enjoying the peacefulness of the evening time. Its such a nice place and so full of character. We had such a great time. Actually, didn't want to leave. You are so kind and generous. I'm sure that all the families to follow will say the same thing. How could they not? Once again, thank you for sharing with us and all that you have done. This time will always hold a very special place in our hearts as well as you.

Z's Retreat- A Cozy and beautiful home away from home in quaint Mariposa

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Z's Retreat!! If I could give it 6 stars, I would. Cindy and John were so attentive and the house had everything that we needed for our little family, including our two doggies. It is a cozy, inviting and beautifully-decorated home with a beautiful deck in the quaint town of Mariposa. We enjoyed our time in the town of Mariposa, especially the historic courthouse, the cute shops and the many good restaurants. We had an amazing time visiting majestic Yosemite in the snow for two days. If you are looking for a perfect home away from home with access to Yosemite, Z's Retreat is the place for you!

A homey and clean cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is neat, clean and homey. You can tell Cindy and John take good care of this place. It was really thoughtful of them to set up a small Christmas tree for us and there were bottles of water and a bottle of apple cider waiting for us when we arrived. Though we had a little plumbing issues(when we used the washing machine, waste water came out of the kitchen sink and the tub), Cindy and John were really responsive, John fixed and cleaned everything in a short amount of time. The cottage was a little further away from Yosemite village than we thought it was, but overall the experience was good and we'd definitely recommand it to everyone!

Wonderful weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Cozy, comfortable, spotless little home in lovely and historical Mariposa, less than an hour's drive from Yosemite Valley. Fenced-in yard and charming, walkable neighborhood were perfect for our canine companion. Nearby restaurants and great local museum a bonus for the humans.--Sheryl & Leo, Bay Area

Couldn't have been better. From the prompt response to the easy check-out it couldn't have gone more smoothly. The property is just as described and comes with everything one needs for a comfortable stay. We were there for a weekend of hiking in Yosemite and we chose the right property. We drove into the park both days and returned in time to shower and stroll into town for dinner. The house is conveniently located just a couple of blocks from the main road but on a quiet street with no traffic noise. The bed was extremely comfortable and coffee was provided in the morning. An excellent choice when visiting the area.

Comfortable and Close to all we needed

  • 5 of 5

My parents and my wife and 18 month old son enjoyed 3 great nights here, and it was almost perfect. We were in the heart of Yosemite in about 30 minutes, but we also loved being in Mariposa where we walked to and from the main street and had a short drive to the grocery store and other stores. I have a great picture of my dad looking out the front window before he said, "I'm just wondering how long it would take me to climb that mountain." From that you will know that there is a beautiful view of the foothills of the Sierras from house. Beds were comfortable and most of the kitchen amenities were perfect.

My 3 recommendations are:

1) Bring your own pillow. The pillows used are fine, but they are wrapped in plastic under the cover. This makes you happy that it is easy to clean, but a little warm on the face.

2) Bring your own knives. The knives provided reminded me of the cheap ones I had in college, which is to say they work, but not without a lot of work from you. We were able to go by Ace Hardware and pick up a few new ones. I acknowledge that this is also part of my own pickiness.

3) You may want a stool for moving your stool. The toilet is a little tall, so for kids or ergonomic bowel movers, you may want to bring your own small step stool.

Three very minor issues but ones that I hope will make sure you enjoy your time at the Z's as much as we did.

Owner's Response: Yes, our pillows are covered for cleanliness, but it is not quite "plastic" just polyester. And our knives are adequate for most kitchen jobs. In our defense, Acorn squash is quite a task for most knives. As for the toilet, we will look in to a step stool for children and... :) We hope you can come again and enjoy Yosemite and Mariposa! We enjoyed meeting you and your sweet family!
