Casa Jacaranda – A Colonial-Era Jewel

On a little cobblestone street, behind heavy antique wooden doors, lies the most authentic of the original colonial Mexican houses of San Miguel. This charming family home has captured and preserved its true Mexican essence, from the vine- covered courtyard, with its colonial center fountain, to the massive wooden beams holding up a beautifully hand crafted wood porch covering a lovely, light filled outdoor living room decorated with brightly colored pillows adorning antique wooden furniture all enhanced by a century old orange tree, jacaranda tree, and beautiful, blooming bouganvillea. Built in the 18th century, Casa Jacaranda has been restored to its original colonial heritage. You will find yourself immersed in the ambience of colonial times but with all the comforts of home.

ARCHITECTURE - In classic Spanish-Moorish style, Casa Jacarnada is surrounded by high stone walls sheltering a world of private beauty. All rooms open into the courtyard, with 2-feet thick walls keeping the rooms cool during warm seasons and cozy during the occasional chilly nights. Enter each room through an old stone doorway with old mesquite French doors leading from one room into the other. There is a flow of indoor-outdoor living. A covered patio fills one length of the courtyard with its intricately-patterned roof over which bursts a scarlet bougainvillea.

The center fountain (dated 1706) fills the house with the sound of splashing water while morning doves dip their beaks in and hummingbirds flit from flower to flower. In the background are the sounds of San Miguel: church bells tolling, the whistle of the knife-sharpener, the call of the flower vendors, as if time stands still. Open the front door to see the little burros being led down the streets carrying firewood door to door for sale. Sometimes you even have a little band playing out of tune in front of the house waiting for you to come out and reward them before they move on to the next house. Due to the traditional colonial design the house is always light, cool, and lovely.

LOCATION- Casa Jacaranda is ideally located in the historic center of San Miguel, steps from everything there is to see and do in town. Go to your right and stroll into Parque Juarez, the most beautiful park in San Miguel; turn left and discover cafes, markets, antiques, produce vendors, and even the new grand Rosewood Hotel with it’s fabulous roof bar and extraordinary vistas. From the roof garden is the view of the spire of the Parroquia, the gothic-style church in the town square, called the Jardin. The Parroquia is San Miguel’s most famous landmark. The central square is a wonderful place to sit on an old bench and watch the comings and goings of the townspeople while reading the local paper, eating a homemade ice-cream cone sold from a horse drawn carriage and meeting people. Everyone loves to talk and will be delighted to give you guidance and share the secrets of San Miguel.

LIVING ROOM, DINING ROOM, KITCHEN, PANTRY – As you enter Casa Jacaranda, two rooms face each other across the entranceway, one leading into the brightly colored 1930’s style Mexican- deco living room. The massive stone fireplace is the prominent feature of this vivid room which leads you into the dining room with its large stone hearth and mirror reflecting the warmth of the room with decorative candles. A low blue table and open archway separate the dining room from the spacious kitchen. A huge campana (hood) reaches to the ceiling over the professional chef stove set into the green cemento pulido (smooth, hand tinted finished cement). A niche filled with vintage ceramics covers the entire wall over the deep double sink. In Mexico a pantry is a room of its own, with an additional sink, and all the modern appliances as well as cupboards filled with glassware, utensils, and hand-blown glass canisters filled with the staples of Mexican cooking.

BEDROOMS - Casa Jacaranda has 3 bedrooms. The master bedroom is opposite the living room, with floors of dusty- rose and old wooden shutters opening to the street. A hand-wrought decorative iron bed sits in the center of the room with 2 large armoires on either side. An attached bathroom of chocolate-brown polished cement trimmed in hand-made tile with a hand-shaped tub and shower features a sink made from an old baptismal font.

The second bedroom is in the back patio with the jacaranda tree providing shade on a sunny day and purple blossoms in the spring. This intimate room has a decorative double-size iron bed, built-in window seats and a walk-in closet.
Cross under the portal into the Moroccan-style bathroom with an arch separating the green cemento pulido tub and shower.
From the back patio walk up the stone steps around the jacaranda tree to reach the little cottage perched on the roof with a queen-size bed. The attached large bathroom has a large round burnt-umber tinted tub and shower and the sink is made of an old grinding stone. This little cottage-like room has its own covered patio with cushioned chairs and a wood-burning fireplace. Farther out on the rooftop is a flower-filled garden with lounge chairs and views of the Parroquia and the Monjas, the 2 most famous churches in San Miguel.

OUTDOOR LIVING/DINING AREAS - As mentioned earlier the courtyard has its own covered patio with dining area and living room sala. Since the weather is beautiful year round you will spend most of your time here, dining and lounging at your leisure.

Car: Not Necessary

When our house is rented we stay at our ranch which is 20 minutes outside of San Miguel. Rancho de la Capilla is an historic site with a painted chapel and other religious structures. It is also where we enjoy horseback riding and taking people for guided tours. We hope you will join us for a ride or come and visit and enjoy a drink and guacamole on the terrace overlooking the Picacho Mountain range. We are always available for any help or guidance you may need, just a few minutes away. If you would like to see the ranch you can find it at our web page.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2001

About the owner: My husband Steve, daughter Lila, and I moved to Mexico in August of 2000. I had grown up in Mexico City and left for college and spent most of my adulthood in NY, working in advertising(as my husband did as well). My parents never left Mexico so we visited often and thought maybe some day we would live here as well. When my parents retired to San Miguel we were captivated. Finally, we decided to make the break. One day we walked around the corner and found our dream house......or soon to be. We moved in and so began the laborious but thrilling project of restoration. Our house is much the way it might have been in the early days of San MIguel. We searched for authentic materials, old ruins and obsessively restored our house as historically as possible. Now with our daughter living in the U.S. we are spending more time at our ranch outside of town and our house is therefore available for rentals, short-term and long-term. We love to come and go and have all the advantages of living in the historic center of town. But we also love to jump in the car and drive 20 minutes into the countryside and another world. We are always available to our guests. We have a full-time maid and handyman as well. All your needs will be taken care of and we look forward to meeting you and taking you out to the ranch for a ride or a visit.

Why the Owner Chose Centro Historico, San Miguel de Allende, Gto., Mexico:
Casa Jacaranda is our full-time home. San MIguel has been a wonderful place for us to raise our daughter and build our ranch business. We have had so many adventures here. At the ranch we have had cooking classes, weddings, tours, and riding events. This is a wonderful place for a long or short visit.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our house is located in the middle of the historic center of town, everything within walking distance. There are also many little trips within a short distance from San Miguel. We can make arrangements for you to visit special places and take care of all your needs.
