Spend the afternoon with your novel on the porch day bed listening to the gentle waterfalls of Mill Creek. Enjoy the evening in the waterfront gazebo with a fire and friends. Property surrounded by lush rhodedendrum and laurels. Master bedroom upstairs will keep your family and company a close by 'not too close' distance. Both floors have porches, and larger entertainment areas. Property includes use of my canoe located two blocks down the trail on Mirror Lake. Enjoy the perfect holiday you have earned here in Highlands. Your well behaved pet is welcome here to come play with my Kippers, Kippers and I live one block away.

Attention to every detail. Morning walks to town on Kelsey Trail, enjoy Bascom Art Center. Afternoons will find you in the outside day bed, enjoy a great novel with your glass of wine while you listen to the gentle flowing waterfalls on Mill Creek. Evenings you will be in the creekside gazebo with a fire and friends you meet that day on Kelsey Trail. Open floor plan is perfect for entertaining. Upstairs master and two downstairs bedrooms keeps your company close, but far enough away : ) Both upstairs and downstairs have decks and large common areas for entertaining.

Very disappointing...

The property is in an excellent location with easy and quick access to Highlands shopping. But that's where it ends.

1. We had two of our grandchildren here with us for a few days: we were all very disappointed with there being no canoe/paddles, as described. Owner said she'd get back to us on that, but never did.

2. Refrigerator ice maker broken.

3. Barbecue inop/broken?.... Would not light, though gas was on. Barbecue itself had not been cleaned in a long time. Very grimy and full of spider webs.

4. Many lights inop.... Had to buy and replace 7-8 bulbs.

5. Upon arrival, almost all windows on both levels were partially opened. Whole house was very humid and musty smelling. The only air conditioning is a small wall unit on the upper level. We ran it continuously to rid the dank smells. That A/C unit leaks water onto dining room floor. Lower level wood floor(s) are warping as a consequence of very high indoor humidity.

6. All bedding in lower bed rooms needed to be washed as ants were everywhere and sheets/pillows were musty smelling.

7. Though we cleaned kitchen daily, ants were always here also.

8. Light in adjustable vanity mirror in upper bath not working (small item, but nonetheless...)

9. Both sliding doors on lower level to yard do not lock. Not very comforting and major Safety/Privacy issue.

10. Though owner brags of trout in stream, we only saw minnows. As with canoe not being available, very disappointing for visiting grandchildren.

Note: Property is for sale....

All in all, we spent a lot of $$$ on cleaning supplies that should have not been necessary and the owner's happy property description reflects her personality and not reality. Again, great location but property not well maintained.

Owner's Response: Oh my, I pray we never have anyone like this again. In all the years i have rented my home, I have never had anyone leave such a filthy mess that my housekeeper was crying. I live one block away, and stopped by to see if this guest needed anything. They could not find the canoe, so I checked, and told them it was there, and paddles were next to the tree. Nothing else was mentioned, even though this guest has my cell phone number. This has been the driest year in Highlands in 40 years, so the water behind the house is low, and the city decided not to stock the stream. This is an act of God, not the property owner. Highlands is not Disney World....cue up the comes visitors. This is a real town. As i told this guest and his family, shame on you for the mess you left and for signing up as just 2 guests and bringing more. I will post an owner review to warn other home owners. My neighbors called to complain about this guest washing their cars, leaving mats on lawn to dry, and towels on the front porch to share with everyone that walked by. I take pride in my home, and my neighbors take pride in our community. We are not a company, but a neighborhood. I am here to answer questions, bring supplies if needed, and my housekeeper take pride in her work. I don't feel the town of Highlands is a good match for this guest. I suggest South Beach next time. Great location, nice landlord!

The pluses: The house is in walking distance to town, which was very nice and enhanced our stay. The "living spaces" were nice--several sitting areas, both inside and out. The owner, whom we had to contact when our family encountered a nest of yellow jackets living under the deck and when the dishwasher didn't drain properly, was very responsive to our needs. The minuses: The basement, where two of the three bedrooms are, was musty and damp. This is not good for allergy sufferers. Dampness has damaged the flooring, which needs repairing, but the rest could be corrected with an adequate number of dehumidifies. Overall, the house was a bit cluttered, which technically isn't a big deal, but is esthetically detracting. This is easily remediable, and would make the cost of the house a much better investment of vacation dollars.

Nice spaces, great location, great owners!

We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend. The house itself is kind of quirky, but the spaces are awesome. Large kitchen that opens up to kitchen/living area overlooking the woods with a wood burning stove (we didn't use it, but would be awesome in cooler temps) was nice. The living room is good size with plenty of comfy seating. The deck area is very large with lots of seating. And the creek area is really nice and relaxing. There's a downstairs living area that is large and comfortable. There's an outbuilding down by the creek with a bed and rocking chairs. And there's even a lower deck area. So there are lots of options for just hanging out, relaxing, reading, talking, staying apart, etc. Kitchen is very well stocked and the gas grill is large and works very well. It is a great location. Very close to downtown Highlands. It's walkable, but we were with my older inlaws, so we drove. The roads around there are very tight so be careful if you do walk (all drivers were very respectful of the tight roads-- nobody speeding). We brought two dogs and I have to say this was probably the most pet friendly place I've ever stayed. The back yard is fenced so our beagle got to spend a lot of time sniffing around. She got under the fence down to the creek, but the natural habitat kept her contained. I'm going to make some recommendations, but they are in no way meant to deter anyone. First, while the deck area is very nice and spacious, the planters could be updated. Most were filled with weeds. Second, there is a nice swinging loveseat down by the creek. I know it's under the trees and this might be too much to ask, but the cleaning folks should clean it. If it's too difficult to keep clean (very possible down there), then consider moving it to the deck. Third, the ice maker does not work (I don't think the water line is hooked up). Not a biggee. I recommend putting this in the description so the renters can buy ice before arriving (we always begin our arrival with a cocktail!). My final comments are about the owners. They are incredibly responsive and accommodating. The communication both prior to and during the stay was incredible. We had an issue with the TV and they were there in no time to fix it. We rent through VRBO/HomeAway 3-4 times/year. We've had all kinds of experience with owners. This experience was the best. I would 100% recommend this rental!

Great space and gorgeous scenery!

We greatly enjoyed our time here. We walked into town and home for supper one night. Our dog had an incredible time olaying in the backyard and the creek. We had plenty of space for 5 adults and loved every minute we could spend on the deck space outdoors. If we ever get to travel back to Higlands, we will make a point of using this home again. We even hope to make it a family vacation spot one day!
