Great comfortable neighborhood with great access!

  • 5 of 5

This area continues to get better and more comfortable with nice restaurants and bars.

I liked walking down along the Hudson to Fairway Market and then on to Dinosaur BBQ.

After dinner I just got on the subway at 125 and BRDWY and whizzed home. Also discovered a classic little Italian restaurant at LaSalle and Broadway --I think it was Pisticci's.

Owner's Response: Yes -- with Columbia University expanding now up to 135th and the beautiful CUNY campus just across Broadway and up to the East, there is a lovely diversity to the neighborhood of Hamilton Heights. The apartment is 3 blocks from the #1 subway so access to the entire city is easy.

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully furnished gorgeous apartment. Everything it promises to be. Thoughtfully kitted out so it made everything easy. Really close to an array of shops including organic and gluten free specialist on corner. Subway close. Harlem is a great place to stay for a different perspective on NY. Great street art and music. Apollo theatre show, gospel church service and Harlem walking tour a must. Responsive host thank you so much for providing a wonderful homebase for our stay in NYC.

Quaint & cozy but neighborhood not what I expected

  • 3 of 5

My husband & I and our two boys, ages 12 & 9, stayed here for a week for our first trip to NYC. It's a cute little brownstone in West Harlem (which I didn't realize Hamilton Heights was part of Harlem when I booked). The unit is sufficient. The bed is comfortable. We all slept great. The bathroom is tiny, but that might be normal for NYC. The kitchen is adequate. It didn't have a television, which we were too busy to watch anyway so not a big deal for us. We did a lot of walking through the neighborhood back & forth to the subway and the neighborhood wasn't quite as nice as I had been led to believe from reading the reviews. Our first walking adventure was to Fairway Market for groceries. Our street was great. But as we continued on there was dog poop and trash on the sidewalks so we had to be very vigilant where we stepped. (We always made sure to take our shoes off when we got back to the apartment.) We saw people rolling joints on the side of the road (not on our street but nearby streets), something we did not see in any of the other numerous neighborhoods we walked through in NY. All that said, we never felt our lives were in danger. But we also didn't feel super safe either. One night around 11:30 there were 3 men fighting loudly outside our window which was a little unnerving. Had we not had our kids I probably wouldn't have been as sensitive to it. Darlyn was a good communicator which made us feel good that we could contact her if needed. Overall it was a decent stay.
