About the property

Condo, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

After 25 visits to all the Hawaiian islands, this is where we landed. We've seen it all and Kauai's north shore is the best! We are always trying to improve our home and just removed all the carpet and installed beautiful wood floors in the upstairs bedrooms and loft. Wood floors are the best and stay clean and cool. Please click on the calendar tab above to check availability, it's always up to date. I favor stays that are back to back with other stays or ones that fill gaps of any size.

This condo is in the heart of the lush Kauai north shore.

Mauna Kai captures the true North Shore Feeling. A short hike down the Queen's path takes you to peaceful Anini Beach where you can safely swim or snorkel with the whole family. Calm waters and a rich underwater life make Anini one of the best swimming spots on Kauai. This peaceful stretch of beach is protected by the largest coral reef in Hawaii, so instead of foamy waves breaking up on the sand, you can expect a lake like atmosphere. The protective reef creates a beautiful blue lagoon, unsuited for surfing or body boarding, but perfect for family swimming. Many other close beaches offer great surfing, snorkeling, wave play and incredible beauty any time of year.

Mauna Kai is located between the Prince Golf Course and the Makai Course. This location will provide you with the finest tropical golf in the world or for some it may just be a nice walk, spectacular ocean views and great albatross and whale watching. Mauna Kai's tropical breezes and warm waters can be your next dream vacation.

Our beautiful Mauna Kai townhouse is in a lush garden setting at the end of a quiet walkway. It's an end unit with no one above or below, and only one common wall. The tropical landscaping is over the top and this summer the avocado tree was dropping fruit! Fresh delicious oranges were plentiful on the tree by the pool.

With three bedrooms there is plenty of room, two with queen beds and the third bedroom has a new king bed. In addition to the three bedrooms is a open room/loft with a new queen sleeper sofa, play area for the kids and a desk. This area has a DVD/VCR player and new LCD monitor. We enjoy staying there several times a year and make it feel like home, completely livable and fully functional.

Wood floors throughout the whole home give it that clean cool feel. The main floor living area has two story vaulted plantation style beam ceilings. Island style louvered windows offer good air flow to maximize trade wind cooling. The main living area is on the ground floor and stays cooler than units with second story living areas. A 120 gallon solar heated water heater offers plenty of hot water for multiple showers. This summer a complete solar electric system was installed to provide 'green energy' and as an added benefit it will fully shade the up stairs bedrooms. New wood floors have been installed upstairs replacing all carpet, it just doesn't stay clean like a wood floor does.

New furniture and curtains in the two upstairs bedrooms and loft, also with vaulted ceilings and fans (but no AC). The well equipped kitchen is remodeled with beautiful granite counter tops and maple cabinets. The upstairs bathroom has new marble shower and granite vanity top. The main floor bathroom has a new marble walk in shower and granite vanity top with vessel sink.

The Mauna Kai pool is the largest condo pool in Princeville, a pool where you can actually swim laps! The gazebo offers gas and charcoal grills, sink, fridge and space for a private party for 50, however it is usually empty and quiet!

A short drive will take you to Hanalei town or Hanalei Beach Park, an incredible town beach with endless sand, soft waves, wade in swimming and boogie board fun. For the more adventurous, Na Pali Coast hiking, kayaking and Secret Beach are the Ultimate! Secret Beach is a 1/2 mile of ever changing natural sand, waves and cliffs with rarely more than a handful of souls.

A short stroll to the Westin Resort gives you access to the finest luxury spa and dining comforts, without the price of the room. Or maybe just visit for coffee, excellent whale watching, or the ultimate Bali Hai sunset! Bali Hai is the north shore's canvas for the last sunset in the United States each evening. The mountain's majestic profile is the beginning of the Na Pali cliffs along the north shore of Kauai and provides a romantic backdrop for ocean cruises, helicopter flights, and spectacular hiking adventures. It is also the million dollar sunset view just steps from our Mauna Kai condo in Princeville. A stay in our spacious 1500 square foot home is just what you're looking for.

The Princeville Center provides many dining and shopping options, including the local market to stock our fully equipped kitchen. We offer free high speed WIFI and plug-in internet service. A new HD LCD TV with a DVR will get you through a rainy day.

Princeville, on the north shore, is a great base to see everything Kauai has to offer. So come have a wonderful stay in Paradise.

The link below is good to look at to see what the waves are like. It also shows tides, wind, weather and water temperature. The wave heights are for the surfing area off the beach in Hanalei Bay. They aren't as big on the beach. When waves in the bay are below 4 ft it's relatively calm and at most beaches it is easy to swim. When the waves are over 10 ft it may be unsafe to swim and some beaches can be closed for swimming. In between 4' and 10' (waves in the bay) good judgement should be used. It may be too much for some or just right for wave fun. Good judgement should always be used.

About Bruce Padgett

Traveled to all the islands and settled here. The kids came as babies, now look at them. Aloha!

Bruce Padgett purchased this townhome in 2011

Why Bruce Padgett chose North Shore

Our Mauna Kai condo is really a livable home, we go there and stay 4-8 weeks a year and love it. You would think some condos have never been visited by the owner. Ours is very functional. When we go we cook big meals with family and friends, the new kitchen is really a joy. Mauna Kai is central to all the best that Kauai has to offer.

What makes this townhome unique

The Mauna Kai pool is the largest pool of any complex in Princeville, 78' long. The pool surface was just redone spring 2014 and was delightful to swim in this summer. The gazebo by the pool has several gas grills, a full refrigerator, shaded tables and room for large group activities, you may have it to yourself though! The large lanai at the condo has two tables and seating for 10.

Bruce, we're here and still trying to comprehend our good fortune. Everything is just as described in the renters' manual, only better. I'm sending this email through your lighting fast WiFi and earlier today I spoke with Steve, your on-sight man, just to check in. Shortly, I will begin learning your home entertainment center. Tonight I went to the "for-real" grocery store, just down the road toward Hanalei, and got enough food to get us started tomorrow. (the prices are pretty high, but I guess that's because we're in the middle of The Pacific) We're very pleased with everything.

Thanks again. We're so glad we found Mauna Kai

Great for large families

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Mauna Kai. This place is perfect for people with large families. We were able to spread out but it still had an open floor plan so we could be together. It was clean and well stocked. The kids had a blast snorkeling at Sea Lodge and Anini Beach. We took the trails to both and it was very muddy and steep so just a heads up for those traveling with young children in the winter. Our youngest is two and we had her strapped to our back, we were sliding and crossing fallen logs over water. It was worth it though. Beautiful! We had the beach to ourselves. The grocery store is two minutes away. We went to Hanalei a few times and ate and shopped. We grilled by the pool several nights. Great stay. Thanks!

Beautiful home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This home was perfect for our family of 8. We enjoyed the nearby stroll to Anini beach. The close proximity of Hanalei Bay and it's lovely village. The rooms are comfortable. The bathrooms lovely. The kitchen perfectly stocked with all things kitchen. The washer and dryer handy. The beach towels appreciated during our stay. Less for us to travel with from the mainland and back. The grocery store within walking distance, yet we drove for convenience. We kept the windows open once we were home every evening. During the day we were out enjoying the island. No problem with it being too hot in our home away from home. Our family highly recommends this lovely Hawaiian townhouse for you to make home on your next visit to Kaua'i. Aloha

Perfect for our Family

  • 5 of 5

Bruce's condo was everything we could ask for in a place to stay in Princeville. The location is great. It's well maintained and clean. It slept all 8 of us comfortably. The downstairs was definitely cooler than the upstairs, yet there were plenty of fans available. We would recommend anyone to stay here.

Well-Maintained and Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Pros: We stayed here with my wife, son (3yrs), daughter (10 months), grandma, and uncle and it was just the right amount of space for everyone. Everything was clean and no pests present. Having lived in Hawaii previously, I appreciated the fact that the sugar containers were kept in the fridge. The ants can be annoying. Beds were comfortable and sheets clean. We used the pack-n-play for my daughter, which was a welcomed amenity. Washer and dryer were excellent. The small beach toys and body boards stored on the lanai also came in handy. In general, the place was very well-maintained and had the feel as if the owner was constantly living in the unit. The location was a few minutes drive to Hanalei Bay and we surfed everyday with the small north swell. The shopping complex outside the resort was excellent. We hit Lappert's everyday for their mac nut chocolate covered home-made waffle cones and Kauai Pie.

Cons: We were never able to get the DTV to work correctly even after a battery change. The channel guide worked intermittently and sometimes we couldn't change the channels, but we hardly used the TV.

Beautiful April vacation

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this townhouse and would love to do it again someday. The location was ideal, probably the most beautiful part of Kauai, and just a very short drive to Foodland and the town of Hanalei which has numerous good places to eat. I used the bbq grill at the swimming pool once and that worked very well. Very nice pool, but never saw anyone use it. We did have a problem unlocking the front door the first day. The manual I was given stated to "insert key and tilt up then turn counterclockwise". It took us about 5 minutes to get the door unlocked, after realizing we actually needed to insert the key at an "upward angle". After that, it opened easily for the rest of our stay. The lower level bed mattress is very firm. It would have been nice to have a foam topper available for those whose backs don't like firm beds. Also, be prepared for roaches. They were all over the counter tops when we turned the kitchen light on after returning to the house after dark. Overall, a very nice experience for the 5 of us.

Owner's Response: We are working on these issues at this time. We have regular pest treatments as often as safety allows. It was due for one when you stayed but a last minute booking pushed it off. I was on the beach today at 3 PM, sitting on the sand close to the water, it was clean and pristine, and a big roach crawled toward us. The presence of bugs in Kauai doesn't mean you're in a dirty environment. It means you're in a tropical jungle. We keep the condo as clean as possible. The front door will be replaced completely in the fall to remedy the lock issue. Two of the beds have memory foam toppers and most guests find them just right. Thank you for your comments.

Kauai Weather

Weather you could be enjoying!

Mon 11/26/2012 at 7 pm it is 74°F , today's high was

H 80 F, and the low was L 66 F

Step off the plane and feel the warm embrace of Kauai with average yearly temperatures ranging between 84 and 69 degrees. Ocean temperatures are also perfect ranging from 71 to 81 degrees year round.

Kauai offers seven distinct microclimates, from lush interior spots to arid areas on the West Side. Mount Waialeale (elevation 5,148 ft) is at the heart of Kauai's uninhabited interior and is a quintessential rainforest with over 400-inches of rain per year. The rain that falls around Mt. Waialeale generally does not affect the coastal parts of the island, which get far less rain than the central spots (as little as 18-inches a year in western areas). Much of Kauai's rainfall is a nightly occurrence, and the rain showers that do occur are almost always brief. When you do see rain, wait for the beautiful rainbows that follow.

The trade winds in Kauai also keep things cool for visitors. The winds are generally light and help chase away much of Hawaii’s humidity. With such great weather, any time of year is a good time to visit Kauai.
