This is a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of City life.
The property is very private, but offers all the amenities of home. The Cottage is well appointed sleeping 6 comfortably and more if needed. Just steps away to the beautiful beach and trees of Filongley Provincial Park. And as yet being so pristine and quiet, the cottage has all the amenities of living a completely connected life...if you wish, affording you the best of both worlds.
The place showcases natural Coastal BC at its finest and most pristine. The cottage is a stone's throw to the beach, where you can walk and explore for miles. Or pull up a piece of driftwood and gaze out to sea where there are seals and sea-lions and even occasional Orcas. As the tide goes out, there is a wonderful intertidal display of sea-life; There are sand dollars and sea anenomes and shellfish galore! (Remember your water shoes!) Or take a dip at high tide after the waters have been warmed by the sun heated sand and pebble beach.
The Cottage itself is wonderfully quaint and comfortable. It was hand-built over several years by a lovely German couple who intended on living there permanently. The woman was a fine carpenter and recognized for her artistic design. There is attention to detail everywhere. There are high ceilings in the living room and dining room/kitchen areas giving it an airy and spacious feel. It is completely shingled in red cedar and has a very West Coast appeal. There are large skylights and a multitude of windows ensuring ample natural daylight throughout. It is cheerful and bright all year round. The natural wood finishing is done with driftwood, and old farmhouse reclaimed wood. It is furnished with antiques and folk pieces, ensuring a wonderfully Island feel. For musicians and budding ones, there is a keyboard and old guitar to satisfy your creativity. The extensive wrap-round deck, allows for further outdoor enjoyment. You can have your meals on the porch, read your book, or have a round or two of cards and board games, which the cottage is stocked aplenty for.
For those who enjoy the wonders of the Pacific Rainforest, the cottage sits on the edge of a 70 acre park, with some ancient trees that are hundreds of years old. Adjacent walking trails take you from the cottage alongside the stream or up to the old Beadnell homestead meadow. There is always a place to find shade and to revel in the life that flourishes therein.
For Nature Lovers, you will be amazed at the nature-watching opportunities that abound on Denman Island. There are hummingbirds, sand-pipers, eagles and many other waterfoul and bird species to see. You often hear the hooting of an owl, the call of a loon, and the chirping of baby birds from the Cottage. The deer can be seen foraging for food, often at twilight, and the Eagles circle overhead. There are parts of Denman Island that are important to be conserved as they are home to distinct Butterfly populations. You often see blue, and yellow and other butterflies flitting in the garden.
For those who like to swim, fish, canoe or kayak in freshwater lakes, Denman is one of the luckiest of all the gulf Islands as it has two glorious lakes; Graham and Chickadee. As they are drinking water lakes, please protect the environment and kindly leave your soaps and body lotions at home.
For astronomers and star-gazers, there are often meteor showers in the summer months. So you can wish upon plenty of falling stars! If you go down to the beach, perhaps with beverages and flashlights in hand, you can see the moon rise over Hornby. Without the city lights, the stars, satellites, and Milky Way really ‘pop’ and are outstanding, even to the naked eye. You can even see them through the skylights of the cottage.
And then there are the Denman Community offerings. On Saturday mornings during the summer and on long-weekends there is a Farmers and Artists Outdoor Market at the old school on Denman Road. You can pick up local organic produce and plants, some jewelry or crafts, get your palm or tea leaves read, purchase some local preserves, or partake in some fresh cinnamon buns or other baked and home-cooked goodies, both sweet and savory.
Every Saturday on the same grounds, the Denman Island ‘Free’ Store for recycled household goods is open for those who like to search for treasures of all descriptions. Donations of unwanted clothing and household items, or spare change is very much appreciated. If you forget your book at home, you’ll likely find one there.
The Island is home to a multitude of artists, including world renowned potters, painters and authors who have events and classes regularly throughout the year. See Denman Island Tourism for more information.
Downtown Denman is quiet most weekdays, but can be quite the hub on weekends and in the summer months. It boasts an old General Store (currently expanding) with grocery staples, candy and ice-cream, some pharmacy items and a liquor store. There is also a small local museum, a hardware store, two galleries, a wonderful book and pottery store, a library, a DVD and eclectic jewelry/clothing store, a fantastic bread and pizza bakery, an artisan store, and two restaurants with delicious menus.
The Fall and, especially, the Christmas Fairs are not to be missed and host a multitude of Artisans from all over South-Western BC. You can find out more on Denman Island Tourism Sites.
All in all, the place is a wonderful retreat, and a peaceful escape, to find rest and relaxation, and to partake in the wonders of nature and healthy living. And yet, allowing you the comforts and amenities of home, with the ability to remain fully connected via high-speed internet and Wi Fi, should you wish to be . . .

We've explored many if not all of the Gulf Islands in search of the perfect place and we found it here on Denman Isle. We believe you will absolutely love it too!
Enjoy morning coffee either on the wood deck or stroll down to the beach for a view and the smell of the fresh salt air.
Each moment of the year has its own beauty . . . a picture which was never before and shall never be seen again. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
We have spent a quiet week in this wonderfully bright cabin surrounded by fir trees and a lovely garden with dragonflies, birdsong, and the salt air of the nearby sea. The accommodation offers all that you could need or hope for; it is modern, clean, cozy and well-appointed. Serene is the first word that comes to mind as I try to think about how to describe this place and our time on Denman Island. There is a provincial park across the street for lovely walks and the beach is just a two minute stroll from the front door. In the early morning you can watch clams shooting water in the air by the hundreds and listen to the gentle lapping of the water upon the shore as you sit on large pieces of driftwood in the sand. We have seen seals, eagles, deer, and all sorts of birds; it is a place of great beauty and deep quiet. Many thanks to our hosts for sharing such a lovely spot with guests. We would love to return some day…

Driftwood Cottage was an ideal choice for us from the East Coast to enjoy the West Coast and Denman Island. My wife and I had a fabulous time during our 2-weeks at Driftwood Cottage. It was a perfect location near the beach and park making it so easy to enjoy the ocean, park, hiking, clam digging and hanging out with our grand-children. The cottage had all the amenities necessary to make your stay a memorable time on the island - great spot!
Our thanks & appreciation to the owners and vrbo.com for making this happen.
I went to Driftwood Cottage with my daughter, her husband and their 2 very energetic boys aged 3 1/2 and 7 1/2 years.
The boys loved the cottage inside and out. It is a beautiful cottage while still being child friendly! We adults were able to relax and not worry about destruction of prized antiques!
We enjoyed all the indoor and outdoor games provided. The family went out in the kayaks and loved it.
We strolled many beaches and points of interest and spent one day on Hornby.
It was great experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an island getaway!!
Thank you Dave and Lorraine you are wonderful hosts.
My family loved staying in this cottage. It was cosy and we felt at home on the first day.
We stayed here in July 2014 with 2 adults, one child and an infant. We've spent time on neighbouring Hornby (we were even married there) and had initially intended to book our vacation there. When we couldn't find a rental in our price range, we decided to "settle" for Denman. Denman, as many locals subsequently told is, is the "speedbump" of the Gulf Islands. Everyone has to cross it to get to Hornby but they're all slightly annoyed that it slows their trip. Well, hopefully most people keep thinking that way as then we know Denman won't be spoiled for our next trip!
Driftwood Cottage is a beautiful, quiet, secluded getaway - just as advertised. We arrived here after a few weeks of very busy family visiting that involved quite a bit of traveling. As soon as we pulled off the ferry, we could feel the pace of our vacation slow considerably (the islands are great for this!). The cottage is very well equipped and in the perfect location to explore a good chunk of the island: easy walking to Fillongley, easy drive to swimming lakes and ice cream (key on a hot summer's day with a 5 year old!), we spent so much time exploring the southern part of the island that we didn't even make it to the north (where I gather there are beautiful sand beaches). The sleeping arrangements worked well for us with the adults and infant in the bedroom and our 5 year old in the loft (one note: the loft is right over the living area, no problem for us as we spent evenings outside but might not be ideal for younger kids if the weather was bad).
David was extremely helpful from the get-go and was very patient with our many questions and small changes to travel plans/numbers of guests etc. Without question, one of the easier owners I've ever dealt with for a vacation rental (we've rented all over the world).
Thanks for a stay! We will be back!
Driftwood Cottage was a delightful getaway! The cottage is comfortable, clean and well appointed - including internet. Loved the soaks in the claw foot tub and outdoor shower with hot water! The owners were responsive and kind during our inquiries but left us in complete privacy during our stay. If you want to relax and experience the wonders of the NW coast on a beautiful off the beaten path island, this charming property is for you.
A great, affordable place to stay. Has everything you'll need to for a quiet, relaxing stay. The garden adds to the experience and being a block away from the forest trails of Fillongley Park and two blocks from the beach are added benefits. The owners are also great to deal with.
Eagle Spotting, bird and wildlife watching, Day tripping to Hornby and Vancouver Islands. Whale-watching.
