About this property

Palazzo Di Acqua -a Venetian Palace on the water-

Travel back in time of knights and pirates in a tower full of Venetian elegance!
A Venetian palace on the water, which was renovated driven to preservation of its glory. The position of the tower had a strategic importance, dominates the area, an observatory of pirates. So during the Venetian rule (1211-1669) in Crete, the tower was used by the Venetian governor for manor controlling and collection of taxes.
The view of the tower extends from Rethymno until Akrotiri Chania. Enjoy the panoramic view and the unique sunset from the roof of the tower!!
Each bedroom is in different level. Our best bedroom is a unique arched room in the old venetian cellar. All of the rooms are furnised in a classic style, which blends to the architecture of the building.

In first floor where the stone steps are leading, there is a large rectangular hall (Portego) with wooden floor that was used for Venetian soldier's feeding. The hall is illuminated by six windows renaissance configuration. Back to this space, they were arranged rooms and at the rooftop the governor's office.

On the foundations of the building's vaulted cistern (botzale) for the collection of rainwater and protection from potential poisoning of enemies.
All of the rooms are furnished in a classic style, which blends to the architecture of the building. The roof and the floor are made of wood, while the view from the large windows is breathtaking to the city of Rethymno and the sea.
In the rooms there are large wooden carved wardrobes, beside tables and office furniture of wood and Greek marble.

Our best room is an arch room in the ground floor were the Venetians used to keep oil and wine. One of the few arched bedrooms in Greece.
. On the ground floor there is a luxurious bathroom with wood, Greek marble and bronze details. Wc is in the same style with shower.

In the basement there is a full equipment kitchen, while the whole villa is decorated with luxury furniture in old style!
Feel the luxury in a outside spa (private 5 seater jacuzzi)!
A perfect romantic vacation rental enjoy it!

Fantastic place - incredible views, wonderful town
We absolutely loved this place – thank you Lina! 600 year old home makes you feel like you’re living in history with gorgeous views of the sea and surrounding area. Very large home in a great village with several fantastic outdoor restaurants in the evening. Nicely accessible to beaches, towns, and more. Parking was a bit of an issue, sometimes necessitating driving around to find a spot in town, but our stay was great, the family owners very warm and accommodating. Would definitely recommend!

It`s the most wonderful house, I`ve ever rested!!
Actually, I do not know how to express all my feelings of the villa. We (I and my family) fell in love with the house, just we saw it. We do loved everything there! I won`t be telling how the property was cleaned, comfortable (I found even a needle and thread, everything was at hand) and well-maintained, how the owner was diplomatic, patient (if something was happened, we called Lina and she helped us at any time of the day or night, it`s the truth) and communicative. It goes without saying! For a long time (almost 5 months) we were looking for a villa on the island, we were doing it carefully, as we wanted to spend our the most wonderful day - our weddind day there. And... one day we DID it!!! We found the villa! I have never seen before this a wonderful view from the terrace, I have never lived before in a house, where everything is thought-out in detail (we thought we were in a real castle, even our wedding photographer was impressed the villa). Due to the villa we managed to feel atmosphere of Greece! We lived near the local people and could heard their voice every day, we could see their lifestyle and found out their local traditions. We could experience it thanks to the villa (it has even a special smell, which still in my and my relatives hearts). At the first time we were worried, that we wouldn`t find a place to park our car, but Lina (a wonderful person) made us easy on that point, actually there is a (free) parking where could leave our car and reach the villa for 3 minutes. It was extremely comfortably!!!! There are lots of cafes and in the evening we could see local people were sitting there and talking about something on their language and we joined to them! It was unforgetable!!!! At that time we felt, that we are Cretans!!!! Would I recommend the villa to my friends or relatives? The answer is OF COURSE! And I would join to them! On behalf of my relatives I want to thank Lina and her family for everything she has done for us! I believe, that next time, when we will go to Crete, we will have done everything, that we didn`t do this one in the villa ;) Thank you!

An amazing villa in a quaint and quiet village
This is a wonderful villa in a quiet little village, close to all big-time activity. The pictures are accurate and show how beautiful this house is. It is large and ample for 2-3 couples. We were a party of 3 and sometimes got lost in all of the amazing spaces. Everything is provided that can be thought of. There is no skrimping. The owners are attentive and responsive. We had a water problem one day and the owner was there within 30 minutes to find a fix. As well as exploring the house, explore the little village too. A great bakery, a good restaurant close by and very helpful shop keepers. We have no complaints about the accommodations or location. We were even guided from the airport by the rental car agent, to a rendezvous site with the homeowner. We got in around 9PM and would never have found the house on our own. But not to worry. All was arranged and we arrived to the villa with no problems. Try it - you'll like it!!!!

Palazzo Di Acqua....A Canadian Perspective
We very much enjoyed our stay at Palazzo Di Acqua. The location was good and in a safe area. The owners were available to assist if required but really we didn't need them as the unit was well equipped. They did take the time to check in with us to see if we needed anything and they were most helpful in the booking process to answer any questions that you may have. There was obviously a lot of attention to detail in the re-finishing of this unit and the quality of the work was excellent. There are two kitchens, one on the lower floor and another on the main floor. We enjoyed all the different levels of the unit and the roof top patio was awesome. The 500 year history of the building is impressive and it was nice to be a part of this. We enjoyed the people around the complex and there are groceries and drinks within easy walking distance of the building. We also enjoyed Rethymno which is a 5-10 minute drive below this unit and we spent several afternoons at the local beach. We also found Rethymno to be a good central location to travel to the many various locations around Crete. You will need a car... their car rental recommendation was good. You will do some driving on this island if you are into seeing things. It's a beautiful island and worth taking the time to explore. We often felt like the air was so clear it was like being in High Definition. There are some stairs in this unit so be prepared for this, the only constructive comments I would make is that we were not used to the lack of shower curtains, though it was a good exercise for us to conserve water. Also we were not used to a cool hot tub but I gather that is the norm in Greece as electricity is expensive. We found the elaborate TV and sound system a bit complicated to operate so we didn't really use it but it was nice to play cards, talk and just enjoy each others company. Crete is a beautiful island, the people are friendly, the food is good and the wine is excellent. I would have no hesitation recommending this location or it's owners....Enjoy!

Unique Accomodation, spectacular view
We (couple) stayed in Palazzo di acqua for 9 days in the end of october, and we really loved this place. The house is very special - the owners renovated the old building with lots of love. The wooden windows, doors, floors and furniture made it a comfortable home to us. It was as beautiful as the pictures in the internet promised. The owners provided us with all information we needed, the house was very clean, the kitchen was well equipped, and we enjoyed the jacuzzie. The most amazing thing of this Tower is definitely the spectacular and incredible view from the terrasse on the roof. We would recommend this Palazzo to everyone who wants to live in an ancient and very special holiday home in a small village with only few tourists which is the perfect starting point to individually explore the North of Crete. In only 5 minutes drive you can reach the centre of Rethymnon, within an hours drive you can visit Chania, Knossos, Arkadi Monastery, Heraklion and other interesting places.

My family and I live in Rethymno city. I am mineral resources engineer from the technical university of Crete.

Why they chose this property

My family bought this house cause we were attracted by the history and the architecture of the building. The tower was build 500 years ago with strong fortress architecture. We were impressed by all the architecture spots of the building. The big arch bedroom, the tree trunk ceiling, the huge windows and we tried to keep the same style decoration. Instead of air-conditions -because we didn't want to destroy the architecture- we use the water of the cistern in fan coils. The water from the cistern is in 6 meters depth with the same temperature during the winter and the summer. With this simple and ecological idea we are cooling the house during the summer. Also, we have central heating during the winter.

What makes this property unique

With your enter in the house you will feel like traveling back in time. I love the amazing view from the terrace, which offers star gazzing in the night. We have a telescope for that!! Round the tower you will find the arch entrance of the small castle of the village, which our property used to be an observatory of pirates. Atsipopoulo is a historical small village with venetian and Arabian architecture influence.
