About the property

Cottage, 5 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Gooney Lodge is located in the Browntown Valley below Shenandoah National Park. The earliest portion of the house was built in the 1700's. Gooney has been written about in several books and articles, including John Weaver's 'As I Live and Breathe'. Current owners have had the property since 1959. Located on the banks of Gooney Creek, the main house boasts pine panelling, balconies overlooking vaulted ceilings in living and dining rooms with double fireplace, claw foot tubs (one with shower) in the two bathrooms, an eclectic mix of antique furnishings, including a pump organ and a 100 foot front porch with glider and ceiling fans facing the creek. The kitchen has the original stone walls. Swing for children, books, board games, hammock and rocking chairs on the porch. No TV. WiFi, Radio/CD player, phone for local calls. Fishing in creek and nearby Shenandoah River. Hiking, swimming, canoeing, caving, Civil War battlefields, wineries all proximate. Vaulted ceiling in kitchen with view of mountain; new patios and walkways.

About Anne Rutherford/Mary Blanton

We are the third generation of our family to own Gooney and have had this treasure for 54 years now; the prior owners owned it for 42 years!

Anne Rutherford/Mary Blanton purchased this house in 1958

Why Anne Rutherford/Mary Blanton chose Shenandoah Valley

Gooney Lodge is a gracious old girl, accomodating to all ages. Our family has grown up loving her for three generations now. We are scattered across the country, and want to share her beauty and history with others who appreciate the old as well as the new, and who treasure family time together. We hope you will return again and again as some of our guests have done now for years. Gooney is a special place.

What makes this house unique

proximity to many attractions in the Shenandoah Valley as well as Northern VA and DC

Quaint, Rustic Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Once again, the Gooney Lodge met out needs perfectly. We live in the area and when friends and family get together and there are too many people coming to stay at our house, the Lodge is our go-to back up accomodation. Our guests were charmed by its history and location. The rustic simplicity worked for all.

Family gathering

  • 3 of 5

This is our 3rd visit to this wonderful lodge. Rustic but clean, comfortable and a great place to reconnect with family and friends. Although the creek was low, there was still enough flow for the young ones to play and enjoy! We will see you again, I'm sure!

We had a great time. It's bigger and more historic than we thought. Perfect for adventurous kids

It was the hottest three days of summer 2016 and w/o AC we were tested. We all passed the test and had a blast. The fans cooled the house off at night and the creek kept us cool in the day. The view of the stars at night is just one of many fun memories we have from the stay.
