A great time was had by all!
Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful home with us. We absolutely loved it and Hopkins. I have a pretty good feeling that we will be back again. I kept the door open to the master every night and slept well with the sounds of the water and the breeze blowing through. It was especially nice to have the washer & dryer available.
The home was perfect for our family of 6, including our 1 and 4 yr. old grandchildren. The deck wasn't safe, but we blocked the doors with furniture. The beach worked out great-for snorkeling and the fact that it stayed shallow pretty far out. Austin was so helpful, he even cracked fresh coconuts from the property for us. It is about a 15 min. drive on a bumpy ride into town. Bring repellent for the same flies-we all got bitten pretty badly.
Our Adventure in Belize
My boyfriend and I along with our five kids (3 teenagers and 2 in their 20's) escaped the frigid Canadian weather and traveled to Hopkins, Belize for 11 days. The drive from the airport in Belize City to the house took almost three hours, so be prepared for a bit of a journey. Night driving is challenging. I highly recommend a four wheel drive vehicle as some roads in and around Hopkins and other areas aren't paved.
Our beach front home was absolutely lovely and much larger that what the pictures indicated. Austin, Randy and Elizabeth's son, greeted us upon arrival and assisted us with our needs throughout our stay.
The house is well located for easy day trips to the jungle for hiking, zip lining etc., for Mayan ruin exploration, for diving and snorkeling, for cave tubing and so much more. It is located about three miles outside of the village.
I must say that the citizens of Hopkins impressed me a great deal. Many of them live in shack like homes very different than what our families were accustomed to. They are hard working people including the kids who we would often see walking around with tasty food items for sale. There is a strong sense of community spirit and it is apparent everywhere you look; children running with great smiles from house to house and in and out of shops and stores, women washing laundry by hand together, men gathering to play cards, and shop keepers standing in doorways chatting with pedestrians and bicyclists as they passed by. We really enjoyed our conversations with everyone we met. It was important for our family to immerse ourselves in the culture as much as possible including preparing Belizian dishes for all meals.
Lovely beach home in Hopkins Sitee River
spacious home with all amenities for a comfortable stay right on beach. Location is far from the village which provides a peaceful environment to relax and enjoy nature as intended.
This house is AMAZING!
My husband, 21 year old daugher and 17 year old son stayed here for 6 beautiful days for a celebration of our 25th anniversary. The weather could not have been more perfect! The beach is wonderful and maticulously maintained as is the house. We found everything clean and linens well stocked.
We flew into Belize City and rented a Ford Explorer. Because our flight was delayed, the normal 2 1/2 journey was completed in the dark and took much longer. I wouldn't recommend traveling on the roads in the dark unless you know where you are going because signage is bad, potholes abound and there are lots of walkers/bike riders on the side of the road. I would definitely recommend flying closer to Hopkins and renting from there so you have more time to relax. (also, always rent an SUV/Truck as the dirt roads can get pretty challenging)
We traveled on Christmas Day, but didn't take into account boxing day on the 26th as most retail places were closed. Gasoline was a challenge, but the local Marina was luckily open that morning. We had no issues with resturants in Hopkins - most were open for the holidays and all were great! We can't think of any bad meal, service or experience. The people of Hopkins are very welcoming and helpful.
The house was perfect for us, we bought groceries in Hopkins and made breakfast at the house. We did many day excursions which were all amazing in their own way. Ziplining at Botswana, cave tubbing at the Blue hole national park (directly accross from Ian Andersons, but cheaper and you can do a walk in versus a scheduled trip), fishing and a day trip to the Ruins at Xunitunich. We enjoyed them all, but would spend much more time relaxing and less driving next time.
Austin was very helpful. He checked in with us, helped with directions and recommendations. My daughter called him a walking swiss army knife as he macheted coconuts, had aloe vera plants for sunburn, and had other tools on hand.
The only thing not working was the internet which Austin let us know immediately that it was out and he had requested service from the local provider. We were not inconvenienced much as we had planned well and actually enjoyed our time 'off the grid'. Our children were not attached to their phones and we played many games together instead.
Thanks Austin for a great stay!
The Angus family
Beautiful house in a gorgeous location!
This is a great property, we rented the upstairs unit for our family of four which was more than adequate. Huge living area and bedrooms with plenty of space for everyone and very decent Wi-fi connection. Hopkins is a wonderful, tiny remote town, the people and restaurants are good. Marto, the caretaker of the property, was kind and helpful and made himself available for any questions or needs we had. The beach is beautiful, we enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks. We have recommended the property to multiple friends!
