The Gion House has opened on October 2011, and a traditional Japanese 'machiya' is located smack in the center of Gion. The Gion House was designated Gion historic district building by Kyoto City Government. The Gion House was built in 1892, and was completely restored under the supervision of Kyoto City Government, and it was stand up for historical Gion principle. It is rented an entire house. Our quests may come and go freely, using the house as their own.
The restoration was a labor of love, requiring the participation of artisans specializing in traditional carpentry Kyoto style techniques, and using natural materials in all areas both inside and out. Great efforts were made to recreate an atmosphere, which will allow guests to experience the traditional way of living.
An added modern touch for comfort is the luxurious bathing area and bathroom...where you can soak in the bathtub of pottery while gazing at ‘’Tsubo Niwa’’ garden, after a full day of sightseeing. The bathtub is from Sigaraki ware, and made by hand of traditional craftsman, who has made Shigaraki ware in front of Emperor some while. And, as room will be separated by traditional Japanese fusuma (papered sliding doors) and shoji (Japanese paper) screens with flowers beautifully arranged in along walls, you will feel a sense of warmth. Thus, the guest can experience Japanese aesthetic feeling and mystery in objects of everyday life. The house can be accommodating total maximum 4 persons, and are provided Japanese luxury style Futon on the tatami mat floors. The tatami are using un-dyed organic straw mat and authentic first grade base of tatami.
The living area is adjacent to its own small ’’ Tsubo Niwa’’ garden. There are both floor-heating system and bath-heating system, keeping the place warmer in the winter season. There is space called’’ Hiroen’’ which is located in between living room and garden. This space will give a feeling both outside and inside when the guest are sitting, and there is also designated a World Heritage Site ‘’Yakusugi’’ dining table, which is a Japanese cedar that term 'Yakusugi' refers to trees are more than 1,000 years old. It is forbid the cutting of ‘’Yakusugi’’ now. The light are bring fun to the room, antique light, special order for hand made bamboo with paper light, and traditional wire work ’’Gaishi Biki’’ on the ceiling. Wooden floor and Table were rubbed with natural 100% perilla oil which has been used by Kyoto's Machiya house.
The Gion House are just 3 minutes' walk from Hanamikoji Street, just 2 minutes’ walk from Miyagawacho, which are called ''Hanamachi'' geisha district in Kyoto, also find geishas scurrying down the alleyways on their way to work in the evenings easily.
The oldest Zen temple ‘’Kenninji Temple ‘’is a just 1 minutes walk away. Other temples are such as Kiyomizu temple, Sanjusankando temple, Tofukuji temple, Chion-in temple, numerous restaurants, and downtown shopping district located nearby, which are possible to visit from the Gion House by walk.

Hello, I was born here in Kyoto. We are very willing to welcome our guest in our guest house''Gion Haouse''. The house concept is just offer you the authentic traditional Japanese life style.
Long ago, this place was in oldest Zen Temple ''Kenninji'' till EDO period. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Kenninji was ordered to shrink the size by the government. Geisha association came in to there, and started as Gion district. It has been as image of Gion since at that time by them. For real Gion district was inside the Kenninji temple grounds. We felt that we have to be bound in duty to suggestion both real ''Gion'' and ''Machiya'' as native Kyoto. That's why we started to rent ''Machiya'' in here. Every nights our guests are possible to find ''Geisya'' at just front of our the Gion House.
It is free service for our over 7 nights stay guests!!
We are very willing to make a reservation ''Kyoto Imperial Palace'' '' Katsura Imperial Villa'' ''Syugakuin Imperial Villa'' and ''Moss Temple''. Those are special places in Kyoto. It should be sending a double postcard to either Imperial Household Agency one month and or Moss Temple before 30 days at least for the reservation. The admission and a double postcard are free. But Moss garden Temple need 3000 yen of admission. Please ask to us more details.
We had an amazing stay at the Gion House. Its perfect location made it really easy to get to everywhere we wanted to go. But the best part was always coming back to the house after a long day, luxuriating in the hot-tub sanctuary, and falling asleep in the super-cozy bed. We would definitely stay here again!
Had a wonderful stay in Gion House in September. The house is beautiful inside with plenty of room for a family. The bath is lovely and the outdoor garden. The beds were very comfortable. The location of the house is fantastic close to temples and the beautiful streets of Gion and an easy walk into the city centre (with kids). Easy walking distance to Arabica (great coffee).
We will definitely stay here again. Thanks for such a wonderful stay.
We just enjoyed almost three weeks at the Gion House. This was our second time visiting Gion, but first time with our son who is 3yrs. old. The house was very clean and Tokuji san was very thoughtful in preparing a children's chair for the table, his own mini futon set next to ours and a child gate at each end of the stairway. The Kitchen is well equipped with everything you will need to prepare a meal, we cooked our breakfast every morning. The bathroom is top notch with an interactive toilet you would expect and a not so expected auto fill soaking tub which is relaxing anytime of day. The tatami room was spacious for the three of us and although the pillows were a bit odd at first, we miss them now! The Gion house is located on a semi busy street which is great for getting a taxi if you need it, we usually didn't since the location is a short walk to so many places. You do get street noise. It did not bother us, but if you are a light sleeper, you might have an issue. There is construction next door but we rarely heard anything. I would definitely recommend the Gion House. As far as recommendations for food, a few places near by stood out: Ten you located close to Nishiki market was a top notch private dining tempura experience. We found some humble, delicious ramen at Ramen Fuji Gogo. Yummy yakitori at Wabiya Korekido, their mushroom rice is to die for. The best iced vanilla latte I am having a hard time living without from KissaMaster, also by the market. Our favorite day trips were Arashiyama and Kobe. The Kobe herb gardens were so beautiful and when in Kobe you gotta try the beef right? We ate at Ishida Kitaozaka, not only delicious but a great dining experience. After all the food and sightseeing it was so great to come back to the Gion House, the perfect base for your adventures in Kyoto and beyond. We hope to be back soon! Thank you Tokuji San, you are a great host!
We just returned to Florida after spending 11 days at Gion House. We miss it already and can't wait to go back. Not much room for improvement here. The house is traditional Japanese, completely charming and spotlessly clean. The location couldn't possibly be any better. It's just minutes walk to the best shopping, restaurants, sights and shrines. The bed linens are luxurious, the towels plush, and the soaking tub divine - especially after a long day of sightseeing. And the shower was the best EVER! With water pressure equivalent to a fire hydrant, every shower felt like a spa treatment. Great AC. No TV (so bring your own electronics). Super-fast wi-fi. Our host Tokuji-San was so accommodating and helpful. The one thing we couldn't adopt to were the strange pillows filled with small plastic balls. When we mentioned it, he was kind enough to go out and buy us 2 regular pillows. Bottom line: if you're lucky enough to book Gion House, it will probably be one of the highlights of your stay in Kyoto. It was for us.
This is the second time that we rented The Gion House. We loved it the second time just as much as the first time. The house is beautiful and we missed its smell of cedar and rice (from the tatami). All the instructions about operating the house (heat, air conditioning, cloth washer, bathroom) are exceedingly clear.
It is in a quiet and friendly neighborhood. We got to know again the local artisans and restaurateurs. Cafe violon is usually our first visit and Murafuji our first restaurant. It is very close to some major sights (Kyomizu dera, Maruyama), and main-streets like shijo-dori) on the east side of Kyoto and some major restaurants (up-coming and established, like Shuhaku, Hana Kitcho and Gion Maruyama). The house is close to two stations on the Keihan train line, which tracks along the Kamo river, so one can access Inari on the South or the train to go to Kurama-dera.
Tanaka-san, the owner, is also very helpful and responded promptly and clearly to our e-mail enquiries.
We just cannot wait to come back.
We recently returned from a six-night stay at the Gion House and we already miss it! It's a beautifully designed place, with lovely traditional touches such as rice-paper sliding screens, a soaking tub, and a tatami sleeping room upstairs with futons--yet it's all paired with very modern upgrades, such as heated wood floors, a washer/dryer, and heated toilet. The place was immaculately clean, and we appreciated the small things, such as plush towels and big feather duvets. The location is also great, tucked right in the heart of Gion, yet easily walkable to the downtown shopping area and sightseeing--along with bus and subway lines. Don't miss Kennin-ji Temple, only two short blocks away and one of our favorite sites in Kyoto (and much less crowded than other temples). We stayed here with our two children--ages five and ten--and found it perfectly sized and equipped for our family. The stairs are very steep, however, so I'd caution against staying here with a toddler. Other than that, really a perfect place and location for Kyoto.
