I am an active senior. An artist, retired from many years in student services at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. My husband, Harry was a nationally recognized painter who recently died of Alzheimer's disease. I stay busy with friends, day trips, our dogs and cultural events. I am an avid gardener and do all the yard work. I do my art work when I'm not digging, driving, dining, dog-walking or cooking. I have an active social life and love sharing our property with our VRBO guests. I am currently developing a new, more private area in the yard especially for guests. Watch for new photos. I live on the property and love to share it with guests. If privacy is a major issue with you, just let me know and I can disappear.
Mardy Widman purchased this house in 1979
We replaced an old greenhouse on our property with the guesthouse. We rented to art students for several years and had a great time with the house full of young people. Now that our extended family has out-grown our house, we enjoy having the guesthouse available for our children and grandchildren's visits. Between family visits, we are happy to make it available to others through VRBO and HomeAway.
The yard is very big, has a rustic, country feel to it with lots of interesting, surprising spaces. The 'Perch' can be a great place for naps or reading, can be a theater (our grand kids made a fine village scene backdrop), stage for music (we have had several bands play there) or with the canvas curtain down can be an outdoor movie theater. There are a couple different areas for campfires and picnics. Kids love being here when the blue berries are ripe or the gardens have things to pick. Yet, we are minutes from everything Portland has to offer. What could be better if you want a country experience in the city?
We had two families together over the a holiday and there was plenty of room to hang out and play the supplied board games.
Overall the house fit our needs. Little things could be better - the compost is inconvenient during the rain, being outside on the deck under the dripping gutters; and the outside lighting needed repairs. The owner was very responsive to our requests.
Mardy's place was perfect for our stay in Portland. We enjoyed it thoroughly!! Not far from the city, yet gorgeous trees/fall foliage views out every window. It was well supplied in the kitchen, & bedrooms, with towels, pillows, blankets. A few games and toys for the children too. She and her son were so kind and accommodating! Her dogs very friendly. Beautiful, safe neighborhood. She gave us wonderful food from her garden and fruit trees too. We cooked up the fresh tomatoes and basil with our eggs in the morning, and had fresh pears from the tree-YUM! She just went above and beyond! Thank you Mardy!!
Our group really enjoyed staying at this property. The owner is very friendly and welcoming to her guests. The location is great for heading into downtown Portland and surrounding areas.
We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip to Portland.
Our family LOVE this home! This is the third time we have stayed here. It's cozy, quiet and very comfortable for our family of 10 adults and one child! Mardy is such a nice person. She is so hospitable, but very aware of our need for privacy. We attended our grandson's wedding. We felt staying here was a minature family reunion. So much better then staying at a hotel!
Mardy is very nice. The home is comfortable and we were thrilled to have air conditioning during an extra hot weekend. The veggies and plums made our visit extra special and the short walk through the park to grocery shopping and restaurants was lovely. The Beaverton MAX station was super convenient. All around a great trip! We would stay here again for sure.
Our property is in unincorporated Washington County has a Portland address but is surrounded by Beaverton. Being on the Northwest edge of Portland 1/2 mile from Hwy 26 it is a congestion free trip to the Oregon Coast or wine country. Yet it is a 10-15 minute trip to the heart of the city. Washington Park with the zoo, Children's Museum, Forestry Center, Vietnam Memorial, Rose Garden, Arboretum and great hiking trails is minutes from us. Other places near are the Audubon Center, the Pittock Mansion with incredible views of the city.
