Intresting places near Hafnarfjordur: Some 25 km from Hafnarfjördur (about 25 minute drive) is the famed Krýsuvík geothermal area with its amazing solfataras, boiling mud springs, blowing steam vent and astonishing palette of colour. Just a few minutes’ drive from there are the stunning Krýsuvíkurberg cliffs, where sea birds by the thousands nest and the rolling waves of the Atlantic crash against the rugged shore. Both are examples of amazing natural beauty.
The landscape at Krýsuvík was formed by volcanic activity and upheaval.
The Grænavatn, Gestsstaðavatn and Augun lakes are explosion craters created by volcanic eruptions at various times. Of those, Grænavatn lake is the largest, some 46 meters deep. Its water is green due to thermal algae and crystals which absorb the sun. Gestsstaðavatn lake draws its name from Gestsstaðir, a farm abandoned during the Middle Ages. On either side of the main road are small crater lakes, called Augun, or Eyes.
Hafnarfjordur: Looking for an enjoyable and unique place to visit? Look no further.
Take a break in Hafnarfjörður, the warm-hearted town in the lava,
just south of Iceland’s capital Reykjavík.
Hafnarfjörður’s name simply means ‘harbour fjord’ and refers to
the excellent natural harbour, which has Iceland’s longest history of
continuous port trade - since the 1300s.
Hafnarfjörður is Iceland’s third-largest town, with just over 26,000
residents. And yet that number is open to debate, since legend has it
that some of Iceland’s elves and hidden people live in Hafnarfjörður’s
lava cliffs and rocks, in peaceful coexistence with the town’s human
residents. In fact, it is possible to tour the elf lands, and those with
second sight may even be lucky enough to spot one or two!
Naturally the town also offers plenty of more conventional outdoor
activities, from golf and swimming to horse riding. Museums and
galleries turn the spotlight on history, music and visual arts.

We loved our stay in this beautiful, freshly decorated, clean 2 bedroom/1 bath penthouse Hafnarfjordur apartment with spectacular ocean views. It is near Reykjavik so you can easily drive into the city to shop and go to museums and restaurants. There is a new Kronan grocery store and Fiskibudin (fish) market nearby, so you can also enjoy meals at the apartment. It is one of the best vacation rentals we've ever had! It has a balcony with a spiral staircase leading to an upper deck with table and chairs and grill. It is attractively furnished with all the comforts of home including wifi, TV, hair dryer, washer/dryer, well equipped kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, dining, and living areas. We had prompt email replies from the owner and also met her our second day in the unit. The apartment photos are accurate. I highly recommend the apartment!
I began the first leg of my European birthday vacation in Iceland and this rental property was magical. The owner was extremely accommodating, left us delicious snacks in the cabinets and the decor in the apartment was extremely chic and stylish. I almost didn't want to leave. I enjoyed the view and the area was very quiet, safe and clean. Two fully furnished bedrooms and every amenity was provided to us during our stay. Prior to departing, we washed our clothes and that was such a huge convenience.
I would definitely return to this cozy appointed rental upon my return.
Apartment was beautiful and peaceful. Hosts were great and responsive. We landed early and were able to check in as soon as we got to the apartment. The location is a about a 15 minute taxi from Reykjavik. Relatively easy to get a taxi. While it is the third largest city/town in Iceland, there's not much to do in the area. We went to one of the public pools and then decided to spend the rest of our time in Reykjavik. It is probably better if you have a car.
Also, one of my friends took the Flybus from KEF to Hotel Viking, which is about a 10-15 minute walk to the apartment.
This photos of this apartment does not do it justice. The views are spectacular, the apartment comfortable, very clean and has everything you would need. We are a family of 4 adults and we found the apartment to have enough space for all of us. We were able to make dinners and do laundry comfortably in the apartment. The parking right in front of the apartment made it very easy. There are some great restaurants close by to the apartment and supermarkets. We liked the location a lot and actually preferred it to being right in the heart of Reykjavik. Johanna is so easy to work with. She is responsive but yet not intrusive. We would definitely stay here again and I highly recommend this apartment and Johanna to anyone looking for a great base to stay while visiting Iceland. Thank you Johanna for a very fabulous stay!
This property is even more beautiful than the pictures suggest. It's situated at the end of a small peninsula, making the views even more spectacular than you can imagine. It has floor to ceiling windows, providing the perfect vantage point for watching sunsets and the perpetual gathering of seagulls below. We took the Flybus from the airport to the Hotel Viking which is located right in the town and about a 10 minute walk from the property.
From the very beginning, Johanna was timely and responsive to my inquiries regarding renting the property. She agreed to keep a temporary hold on the property while I researched flights which was very much appreciated. Upon our arrival, I contacted her, and she said she would come pick the 5 of us up at the Hotel Viking -- a completely unexpected and incredibly generous gesture on her part. When we first saw her building, we immediately knew we would be in for a treat. It's a new building (built in 2010 I think?). Her place has a terrific and spacious floorplan with high ceilings, and she has equipped it with high end furnishings. It was immaculate from top to bottom. There's also a good supply of condiments, coffee, dishes and bath towels. You have to supply your own soaps and shampoos. Our departing flight was at 5 pm and Johanna allowed us to remain in the property that day as long as we needed to even though her standard check-out time is noon. She is a warm and gracious host and had a nice booklet of information about the property available as well. There is a lovely restaurant, Gamla vinhusio, a short walk from the property and there is a small shopping area to explore within that same vicinity. The unit contains a washer and dryer, although be sure to ask Johanna about the settings -- we had difficulty figuring the symbols out. Same was true for the oven. Probably only American travelers would have these difficulties, however! This was our second trip to Iceland. On the first trip, about 8 years ago, we stayed in a hotel in Reykjavick. We opted for a condo on this trip and were thrilled with our decision. We love Iceland and will certainly return -- and would stay again at Johanna's place, without question, on our next trip.
Golf: In 1993 the Oddur Golf Club (GO) – an open golf club – was established and became forthwith a member of the Golf Association of Iceland (GSÍ). Its foundation was of two reasons, firstly to enable the members of GOF to participate on golf tournaments on national basis, and secondly to give all people interested in playing golf an access to this unique golf course.
Both clubs, GOF and GO, have enjoyed a gradual increase in membership in the past and currently the combined memberships of both clubs rank among the highest in the country.
The attendance at the Odd Fellow Golf Course (Urriðavöllur) is by good weather, particularly on week-ends, often quite brisk. Therefore, it is advisable for players to book their round of golf in the early morning hours or the day before.
Ski: The ski areas of Bláfjöll and Skálafell are both only 25 minutes away from the city. Bláfjöll is south west of the city and Skálafell east of the city. Both areas have great ski slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding as well as tracks for cross-country skiing. Bláfjöll has 15 lifts. Skálafell has 4 lifts.
