About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, One full and One-Half Baths, (Sleeps 4)

The OBX BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL (Oct) and the OBX MARATHON (Nov) finish line are steps from this large two-storey vintage cottage. Sleeps 4. Impress your mother-in-law with a 'get-away' gift! Perfect for a girls' weekend. Fits the bill for a small romantic wedding party. Waterfront cafes and shops are across the street. Furnished in a colorful and comfy style. Historic Manteo is only a 10 minute drive to the Outer Banks beaches.

With 2 new baths and remodeled kitchen, the cottage has dark hardwood floors throughout. Elegant white wallpapers and tall old-world ceilings in the living room and formal dining room.

The kitchen is bright and colorful, fully equipped for preparing a fresh seafood dinner -- new microwave, coffee maker, toaster-oven and blender for making spring soups or summer smoothies.

A charming full bath and restored bedrooms are on the second floor. All have quirky and quaint ceilings and closets – typical of vintage Manteo – and are furnished with large comfy beds (California King or Queen) and Manteo antiques. The house is centrally heated and air conditioned.

A high-ceiling sun-filled library is perfect for your early morning coffee and the daily paper – hardcopy or electronically delivered via the internet connection. (wifi)

Adjacent to the large living room is our petite television room with a 32” LED TV.

From the cottage, it is only a few steps to the Manteo public boat ramp, the Manteo Yacht Harbor and the waterfront and street front shops and cafes. During the summer months, a Saturday Farmer’s Market is held in the dockside public park – locally grown produce, local honey and local seafood. The nearby weather tower is a must for youngsters as the flags indicate the current (and changing) weather.

The following attractions are all within a short 5-minute drive: Island Farm, NC Aquarium, The Lost Colony and The Elizabethan Gardens.

About Pirate's Cove Realty

A travel writer of destination guides and books, I reside in Sydney Australia. I love little villages like Manteo where I grew up and my haunts are usually near water -- beaches if I can get to them.

Why Pirate's Cove Realty chose Historic District

The house has been in my family for more than 40 years and I grew up on this street (in a different location) attending the local schools. I'm a 9th generation Roanoke islander.

What makes this cottage unique

In the summer, I love walking with my granddaughter, 'JB' to the Saturday morning Farmers' Market where we share a danish and cold drinks and pick out great NC produce. 'JB' loves the weather tower and we check it often.

Walking to Poor Richard's for breakfast (love those grits) and reading the Wall Street Journal online, of course. WiFi is available along the waterfront boardwalk.

Browsing at local galleries -- the old courthouse gallery is charming. Sitting along the dockside late afternoons -- great views of Shallowbag Bay and all the sailboats make for great relaxation.

Walk to Festival Park (2 minute walk) for summer entertainment -- take low chairs or a beach towel -- food/beverage allowed. Many performances are for kids. Granddaughter, 'JB' loves them all.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This was our first trip to Manteo and the Outer Banks. We had an amazing time!!!

Thank you so much!

Baum House on Roanoke Island

  • 5 of 5

This was better than we expected. Very clean, well kept cottage in Manteo. Within walking distance of so many fun things, and also just minutes drive to other beach activities in Nags Head and Kitty Hawk. All the local businesses were so nice and welcoming. When we come back to the area this will be the first place we will see if it is available.

Owner's Response: Danny, Thanks so much for your review and that the house exceeded your expectations. And yes, Roanoke Islanders can be really welcoming -- it's a Southern thing! I hope you will return in the future -- Manteo is a great spot to relax. Regards, Pat

Owner's Response: Hi Robin, I'm so glad that your time in Manteo (and the Baum House) was all that you had hoped for. The location is the BEST, I think, but then . . . I do hope you will return and enjoy even more of Roanoke Island. Regards, Pat

Quaint and Charming

  • 4 of 5

My friend and I planned a girls' weekend to the Outer Banks and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Manteo. The house is ideally located about 10 feet from the main street of town, and we accidentally timed it perfectly for the Virginia Dare festival, complete with pig races, various vendors selling their wares, and exploring the local shops/boutiques in Manteo. The town is quaint and charming!

The house is perfectly located for exploring Manteo, with a local coffee shop (Charis) right across the street. The upstairs (king and queen) beds were extremely comfortable and the house was clean and cozy. Also, we thoroughly enjoyed (and highly recommend) the Bluewater Grill nearby, and nearby beach access with parking spots under a 10 minute drive. We cannot wait to return to the OBX!

Minor suggestions for improvement would be to have a sponge in the kitchen to use for doing dishes, as well as basic condiment/kitchen essentials such as olive oil and non-stick spray. Some beach towels, and a few beach chairs would appreciated, especially traveling from great distances it would be nice to be able to have them there.

I would highly recommend Baum house!

Owner's Response: Hello Audra, Thanks so much for writing a review and for letting me know some of the things we can do to make the stay more convenient for guests. We will attend to those immediately. (Two beach chairs should have been in the front closet of the living room -- we'll put this in the listing for future guests.) Of course, I love that you loved OBX and Manteo. You've made me a little homesick! I hope that you will return next year -- it sounds like May was the perfect time of the year. Thanks again, Audra. Great location

  • 3 of 5

The kitchen was well stocked and the house is in a great location.

With that being said, the key kept getting stuck in the door and the downstairs bathroom had water backup once (we didn't use it after that so we do not know if it would or would not have happened). Also, we were going to use the blu-ray player but no remote.

Owner's Response: Hi Luke, I'm so sorry about the plumbing issue. If you had called Pirate's Cove, they would have sent a plumber out right away. They have an emergency number for problems such as these -- even on weekends. I, too love the location -- really great for winding down, no need to drive anywhere! Pat

It was a wonderful location with shops, food, activities and the boat dock right there.

The house was spacious, well furnished, full kitchen and a dining room. Smaller family room and an office. The bedrooms were upstairs. The beds were great but the ceilings were low which wasn’t a problem for us. We really enjoyed our stay.
