The location is nice and quiet but far from Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island.

  • 3 of 5

It would be cozy for two but as we were three, with our daughter on the pullout couch in the living room, it was small.

My husband and I stayed at the beautifully furnished cottage in Winter Harbor, Maine during our recent trip to Acadia. We chose to stay in Winter Harbor because it was away from the tourist traffic in Bar Harbor. You can take the ferry to Bar Harbor or take a drive there if you like to see the other sights. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and even has a pot to cook your lobsters in. The Winter Harbor Lobster Co-op is just down the street, where you can purchase fresh whole lobster or just the meat during the week. The cottage had the most comfortable bed, and was complete with a fluffy down comforter. There were little vases of flowers from the garden left by the bedside and on the table where we ate our meals. During the summer months there is a farmers market in town once a week, where you can purchase Maine blueberries, fresh vegetables, homemade bread, and other Maine products from the area. There is also an IGA, postoffice, art galleries, and library in town for your other needs. During our stay there was a celebration of the arts going on in town. We attended a gallery opening, and we also got to go to the final presentation of the summer's art program. It was a lovely local performance where we saw a steel drum band perform, and got to view all the art created during the summer programs. My husband and I will be returning to Winter Harbor, next time we plan on doing some kayaking. We loved our stay at the cottage in Winter Harbor.

The Perfect Get-Away!!!

  • 5 of 5

I was thrilled to return again to this charming, comfortable, cozy and well appointed cottage. My thanks to the owner for the bouquet of fresh garden flowers upon arrival---so welcoming. I look forward all year to escaping to this gem of a spot in an unspoiled fishing village surrounded by nature. (On my daily walks have seen diving birds, a large hare, and a doe with her two fawns to name a few.) Scenic Schoodic Peninsula is a great place for a hike, picnic or just a drive through...totally therapeutic! (Photo ops galore.) Be sure to buy the local crabmeat (divine) and lobsters right out of the bay for cooking back at the cottage. And don't miss the shops of the many artists & artisans as well as the local baked goods & produce. I hope to return again soon and highly recommend this perfect retreat for the world weary soul.

Misleading

  • 1 of 5

The place itself is cute and the renter and her agent, I'm assuming, were friendly. However, the pictures and description are misleading. The "cottage" was no more than 10-15 (15 at most!) feet away from the owners home. If you like any sort of privacy, I highly recommend not renting this place. When we arrived, we parked our rental car next to the owners car.. Felt weird. Then we walked to her backyard to our cottage. Which was right next to her kitchen. If you open the blinds to the cottage's bathroom, you look at her house. The kitchen window looks out to a forest, if we used our imagination, it felt like we had privacy. The pictures here make it seem much larger. And they took it at an angle where you don't see their house. I recommend you ask renters how close the main house is to the rental, if you don't already. Live and learn I guess. Then, the cottage itself, oh boy. When we got there, we of course inspected the place. They only provided bath towels. The renter the next day, when I asked her for some hand towels, looked confused. She did however, provide me with some later. They provided two I believe, upon arrival, which were on the racks in the bathroom to dry your hands. The main reason my husband and I chose this rental was because it had a fireplace. They did not communicate with us prior to arrival, and not until I asked how to turn it on, that it was broken and would be fixing it after we left. We were very upset by this. We do not have a fireplace at home, and Maine gets cold. Primarily though, we just like the ambiance. This rental did not have any salt. It's a little difficult to cook without salt, for most people anyway. Then we wanted some ice cream, and they did not have any bowls. We ate the ice cream out of coffee mugs. It was at least an hour away from anything most anyone wants to do in Acadia. We didn't know Winter Harbor was so far away. Our fault for not looking at the map, but the description could say, "Away from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor, but close enough to catch a ferry..." Which, by the way, the ferry follows no schedule and is not reliable transformation. Only a couple restaurants in Winter, some hiking we never found, and galleries. There is a refundable damage deposit which is not listed here, so be ready for that. Lastly, we did not know that the person we booked it with and paid was not the owner until we learned of another person in an email about 48 hours before arrival. This place is not recommended

Owner's Response: In all the years that we have been renting Summer Harbor Cottage, we have never had any complaints. We have always prided ourselves on offering a charming, well-appointed, cozy, reasonably priced, cottage in Winter Harbor. Our website listing clearly states "owner occupied" property, and photo 9 shows the proximity between the home and cottage. The property is sited on a well forested parcel in a very quiet, peaceful location with lots of mature trees and well established gardens of which our guests can enjoy from their windows, deck and entranceway to cottage. The living area overlooks one of the gardens, flower boxes and trees and is very private as soon as you enter the cottage. We leave lots of local information (including hiking trails, free L.L.Bean bus and Bar Harbor Ferry Schedules) so that our guests can enjoy the surrounding area attractions, which are many! The photos are 'very' accurate, as is the description, which clearly states "3 times" that Winter Harbor is part of the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park. We do 'not' advertise a fireplace, but we do have a gas stove which unfortunately had a pilot problem right before these guests arrived. We immediately called the repair service who was not able to fix it for several days and because a service call would have interfered with their visit, we opted to have it repaired right after their departure. Since it was August, we honestly did not think it would be used until fall and do apologize for any inconvenience. It is apparent that this young couple did not thoroughly read our website listing which contained all accurate information, photos, and the 'specific location' of Winter Harbor (Plus there is a property marker that VRBO puts on the listing for a traveler). Additionally, their detailed, "signed" 2 page lease agreement clearly indicated my "agent's full name" as representing my cottage, along with the address of the cottage. My agent also contacts "every guest" prior to their arrival with specific directions, check-in and check-out times, etc., so that each guest knows exactly where the cottage is located. Lastly, the lease 'and' our listing clearly states that the 200.00 refundable security deposit will be returned within 2 weeks after departure date, and my agent returned the deposit within 48 hours of their departure date. It is unfortunate that this couple missed the beauty of the Schoodic Peninsula and the surrounding areas.

No place like Winter Harbor!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I vacationed in Winter Harbor for the first time this summer. The Summer Harbor Cottage was perfect for the two of us. It was quaint, clean, great comfortable bed, and equipped with all necessary amenities. From this location we took a fabulous little ferry to Bar Harbor...just for the views. What a treat. We had rented a car so we travelled to Cadillac Mountain, Campebello, Bar Harbor, and local restaurants. We enjoyed the quaint shops in Winter Harbor. A beautiful spot. It is our hope to be able to visit this place again.
