San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico is the oldest city on US territory (St. Augustine, Florida the oldest city in the continental). Founded in 1521 by Juan Ponce de León, who named it City of Puerto Rico ('Rich Port').

The history of San Juan begins a logn time before its official foundation, in 1493, during his second voyage, Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico. He named the island 'San Juan Bautista', in honor of John the Baptist. But was not until 1508, that the Spanish government appointed Juan Ponce de León as the first governor of the island. He founded the original settlement in Caparra, now known as Pueblo Viejo, behind the almost land-locked harbor just to the west of the present metropolitan area and the city quickly became Spain's most important military outpost in the Caribbean.

A year later, the original settlement was relocated to a nearby coastal islet (to the site of what is now called Old San Juan) and named Puerto Rico (Rich Port). Sometime during the 1520s, confusion over the names led to a switch, the island took the name of Puerto Rico and the town became San Juan.

Today, San Juan is known as 'La Ciudad Amurallada' (the walled city) and is one of the biggest and best natural harbors in the Caribbean and is the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas (after Santo Domingo, which was officially founded on August 5, 1498.)

I worked in San Juan over the summer and stayed at Jaime's place. I really enjoyed it, here are some pro's and a few cons:

Pros: Extremely close to the beach; very safe neighborhood; minute away from Calle Loize (ton of good restaurants); walkable distance to Condado and runnable distance to Old San Juan; overall the house is tremendous, modern cooktop/refrigerator, AC etc; rooftop is a good place to hangout; TV comes with Netflix, Jaime is very responsive if you have any issues.

Cons: No fire alarm/ Carbon monoxide detectors: this is apparently due to safety regulations in Puerto Rico but was slightly bothersome (especially since you have to internally unlock doors in order to leave the apartment); rooftop has metal railings which chip away really easily so the roof can be a tetanus danger zone at times ( I swept it up but never went up there without shoes on); no oven (there is a grill but it was unclear if it worked, I never tried it).

Miscellaneous: I would recommend buying Raid for the ants/cockroaches (this is a general Puerto Rico problem, its only a small problem in Jaime's place); shower is located in the middle of the first floor and is fairly see-through, which can get awkward after a day on the beach if you have people over

Very nice place

Great location, close to beach and restaurants. Lovely front patio and great space for two people. Be forewarned, however, that the bathroom is on the first floor and the bedroom is on the second with a spiral staircase in between.

Great location/gated residence, would rent here again!

We stayed here in feb 2017 for 7 nights. Jaime was quick to answer any questions that I had prior to my trip and he texted me the directions/info needed for the day of my arrival. Jaime also checked in with us through text message 1 day to ensure everything was going good. The location is great- just 10 min. from the airport. The beach is just a 2 min. Walk away (the beach is beautiful!! Not crowded at all), there are 2 beach chairs and 2 beach towels provided at the house. The house is also located near several restaurants/bars/mini mart/Walgreens that are in walking distance (5-8 min walk). I recommend eating at pinkys and the burrito shop. Also, it is only a short drive to old San Juan, isla verde restaurants/casinos, etc.

The house itself is spacious, the kitchen had all the dishes/utensils needed. There is no cable but Netflix is installed on both tvs & the wifi worked great! The bed in the master bedroom was firm and very comfortable! The bed linen was clean & there was lots of space to store your clothes/belongings. One of my fav. Parts about the place was the roof top terrace- it has a beautiful view of the nearby neighborhoods & it was good for sunbathing during the day and relaxing at night. The bathroom shower was also nice & had good water pressure. There are 2 AC units (livingroom and master bedroom) & both worked great!

The only reason I am giving this place 4 stars is because there is a small ant problem within the kitchen & dining room area. This did not bother us much at all since we barely cooked in the kitchen & ants are common in that climate. Also, there needs to be some dusting downstairs and in the master bedroom (large amount of dust throughout the house...only reason I mentioned this is because of allergies). Overall, the upkeep for this place is good!

I had a great experience and highly recommend staying here! I felt very safe and there are surveillance cameras on the property and it is gated! The neighborhood is also very quiet. You can't beat the close proximity to the beautiful beach either!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This property is exactly how it appears in the pictures. It's gated with security at the entrance of the community, literary steps away from the beach, 10-15 minutes from Old San Juan and if you like to party La Placita isn't too far away. The property is very spacious, the windows in the bed room are amazing and the views from the roof are incredible. The place was clean, you really can't go wrong here. My next visit I will definitely stay here.
