This suite has modern amenities, such as satellite TV and internet; yet is decorated in a style reminiscent of the late 1800's in King Kalakaua's Hawaii. A room fit for this King--were he still alive today. Yet, one of the beauty's of this Suite, is that it is also simple and uncluttered. Romantic for two people; or simple and quiet if you want to write a book or do a painting, without much disturbance.
Enter your Kalakaua Suite through our central foyer downstairs. Owners, John and Christine live upstairs--so you feel autonomous, yet have us easily available if you need us.
This Suite features a miniture kitchenette, discreetly tucked into the expansive closet along one side of your bedroom. The kitchen has: a small refrigerator, a microwave, a hotplate, a toaster oven, a regular toaster, an electric teapot, a coffee maker, cutting board, dishes, utensils, cups, glasses, and some basic condiments and supplies. A 'summer kitchen' is being developed on the outside entrance to your suite, under an expansive awning.
Perhaps one of the most stunning features is the large bathroom with two pedestal sinks, a shower, and a separate toilet room. The large round Kohler jet tub in that room--is for looks only, right now... never the less; it looks stunning in this large bathroom.
Our 'simple living' in this off-grid location includes a catchment waters system with water caught on the roof, stored and filtered for cooking, bathing, and brushing teeth; as well as bottled water that we supply for drinking. We turn the power off in the middle of the night, at a coordinated time to suit your schedule. (Typically, 10:30pm to 6am the next morning.) We are powered by a quiet state-of-the-art Honda generator with an inverter. You cannot hear the generator from the King Kalakaua Suite.
We wash your dishes daily! Just leave them on the coffee table in the morning and voila they are available all cleaned up for you by late afternoon!
John and I are happy to give you tips for how to enjoy our island or connect you to good people if you are planning to move here.
Our published rate is based on double occupancy, but we can accommodate a third person for an additional $15 USD per night with advance notice.
Mahalo in advance for helping us make the Kalakaua Suite a truelly unique and charming place to stay.

Year Purchased: 2002
About the owner: John and Christine purchased this property after searching the globe together for sixteen years, including living abroad in Papua New Guinea for four years. Initially, we avoided Hawaii because we worried that it was over developed for our tastes. Then we found beautiful Hilo and the Hamakua Coast and thought it has just the right balance of old and new; adventure and sophistication. Green, lush tropical rain forests, breaking surf with wonderful snorkeling nearby, snow covered Mauna Kea, and more cultural festivals and fun art events than we ever could have imagined. We raised our daughter here and she in turn raised two baby goats. We have a licensed plumbing contracting business from our home and you can see more of what we're about on Emery Plumbing website. We have an art gallery on this property and we love to host big events. *Let us know if you wish us to host a special event for you... *One note: If you experience any difficulty booking online or simply prefer not to book online--please don't hesitate to call us now at 808 960-8826 Hawaii-time 6am to 9pm. Mahalo.
Why the Owner Chose Papaikou, HI, USA:
You drive up the road wondering where in the world you are, park, get out of your car, and turn around to see one of the most stunning views on the Big Island. Not sure how it is that we've been so blessed. We can see from the Kapoho Lighthouse to Pepeekeo Point. On rare occasions we can see the hot orange lava flows coming from far distant Kilauea. But mostly it's all about the sky here. Gorgeous sunrises, peaceful pastel sunsets, and a night sky that will knock your socks off.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
This King Kalakaua Suite offers exposure to a bit of history from King Kalakaua's era in the 1800's. King David Kalakaua was the first monarch to travel around the world. In addition he returned hula traditions back to a place of honor in the Hawaiian Islands, had the Iolani Palace built and outfitted with electricity and a telephone--ahead of many cities on the U.S. mainland. A true renaissance man. This suite will invite you to relive that exciting chapter in Hawaii. In addition, we are at the top end of a beautiful country road which is great for taking walks. The peace and quiet beckons romantics, writers and artists; whilst adding satellite connectivity with both internet and TV. Plus, this is our most private suite and it still enjoys a big ocean view, looking north east towards the Hamakua Coast. Come see.
