Not what we expected :(

  • 2 of 5

I'll start with the pros. The cabin looked cute and provided what we needed for the weekend. The king size bed was comfortable and the sheets seemed clean. The location was convenient, had a nice view of the mountain out front, lots of stars, and the check in/check out was simple. It was also great to be able to bring my dog.

Unfortunately, we were disappointed in the overall cleanliness. The house smelt musky. The floors/ furniture did not seem to be vacuumed before. There were old crackers left on the window sill, old trash behind the trash can, a pill left in the corner of the bathroom. The silverware, pots and pans were left with dried food. The grill was not clean. We planned on cooking and grilling, but had to go back to the grocery store to buy food that would not need to be cooked. (We did not plan on having to clean on our vacation especially when we were charged a house cleaning fee!) The outside trash can also had trash left over from the last guests.

Luckily, the binder that was there was extremely helpful! The description of the house said wireless internet was available, but the owner messaged me privately after the house was booked to let me know that there was in fact no internet. I was told there was good cell phone coverage, but we had none (beware T-mobile does not seem to work well in the area!) It was very frustrating to plan and find things.

Lastly, I left a note for the owners when leaving (since I was unable to text them the entire time). I have not heard from them and was disappointed that they did not comment on the condition of the house.

I hate to give a review like this because all the other comments were so nice and the owner was helpful with answering questions and giving advise before we arrived. I hope this was a fluke.

Great cabin to bring dogs

  • 4 of 5

My dogs loved being with us in a new environment. Everything was exactly as described on their HomeAway page. When we arrived AC was turned on and homebaked cookies were on kitchen table. The twin beds have been converted into a King. Buy your groceries ahead of time, will be cheaper or buy them at Mt Ida. Do not buy anything, even gas at that Joplin store, everything is much more expensive, go to town. There is a binder with pamphlets and recommendations, but you can always message Oldog, he will reply quickly in a friendly and funny manner. There is another cabin owned by them a few feet away, no one was there much of our stay so it was very quiet. Bring your super strength Bug repellants, lots of chiggers and mosquitos. The cabin has no enclosed fence so you have to leash your dogs when they are left outside. Cars drive very fast on the main road, so be careful turning left or right, there are no stop lights. All attractions are less than 30 minute drive, lake is maybe a 3 minute drive, Crystal shops everywhere, Wegner is about 15 minutes or less. The Dairyette in Mt Ida, had really good catfish and ice cream.

Unexpected surprise...

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I dig for crystals at Mt. Ida, AR once a year; this year a friend of hers joined us. The local hotels either lacked the space we wanted or were too expensive. We decided to check cabin rental options and found this little gem.

Although I questioned the idea of 'cabin' lodging, the rental fee was minimal when divided three ways, so we committed. My concerns disappeared upon arrival; we immediately loved the charm, privacy and amenities the 'little gray cabin' provided. Location was good, maybe fifteen minutes away from the mines; the cabin was clean, and clearly, much consideration was taken in supplying us with absolutely everything we would need for our stay - including a plate of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies waiting for us on the kitchen table.

Whether I bring one friend, two, or travel alone, I plan to stay here on ALL future Mt. Ida trips!
