Bill is a new retiree after working on the North Slope for 37 years, while I have been a community volunteer and raised our son. We hand-built our log home in Alaska, so appreciate the NC folk arts and crafts. Bill has a boat so goes fishing and shrimping. I love motorcycling, hiking and camping. We have been involved in volunteer timber-framing projects in NC and AL.

SHIRLEY FEDORA purchased this house in 2011

Why SHIRLEY FEDORA chose Blue Ridge Mountains

After exploring ID, AZ, NM, and CO, we chose Lake Lure for the close proximity to Asheville - cultural events, music, free thinking, good brews and health care; to the Blue Ridge Parkway - for scenic drives on my motorcycle; and to all the Parks for hiking, camping and waterfalls. We are 'small town' people, so the helpful friendliness and many activities of Lake Lure match our town in AK. This will be our winter retirement home.

What makes this house unique

Turn into the driveway and the rest of the world disappears! Peace, quiet and tranquility! The creek (and wildlife) creates their own music and ever-changing shows. Can roam freely on the 10 acres, whether along (or in) the creek, on the blue-ribboned trail, in the fields or hillside woods. Stepping stones and Swing in the garden with always some flower blooming! Can enjoy the evenings BBQing and having dinner on the front deck. Then stargaze while soaking in the hot tub, listening to the nightlife.

Love the spaciousness of the log home with antique and home-crafted furnishings. Kids can easily take over the loft area for all their needs/play, leaving the rest of the home for your relaxation.

Horse riding and fishing are just a walk over next- door! Zip-lines, outdoor climbing wall and a giant swing is your neighbor! Ease in driving to library, grocery or hardware store. This area has everything you could possibly want to do!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was an awesome place to stay & relax. Being off the road and away from other people was great. It was great not having cell phone service-It was like having a REAL vacation away from everyday life.

I had a ball with my kids, watching scary movies on NetFlix, then seeing where they wanted to sleep come bedtime. This place is so spooky at night, you probably don't have pizza delivery after dark (Ha, Ha). Thanks again! (From Guest Book)

Owner's Comments: Actually, Dennis, we will be having pizza delivery available from Dalton's General Store this Spring! Cell coverage is spotty in this area, so I have 3 land-lines for use, but hike up the hill behind house to use cell when want. I love this place too, so won't be accepting your offer! Thanks!

Lovely cabin! Perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time and only wished it had lasted longer. The cabin is spacious with plenty of room for my family of 5, plus my mother in law and Great Dane. Our kids and dog loved playing down in the creek and running around the huge yard catching fireflies at night. The entire family loved having foosball matches!! The swing and front porch were a couple of our favorite places to just sit and relax with a cup or coffee or a cold drink. And the hot tub--my husband loved it. My mother in law LOVED your decor and all your flowers, especially the beautiful orchid.

Your home is cozy and well appointed. Your guests could never feel anything but welcome! Thank you for allowing us the honor of staying in your home. We look forward to returning next year.

Property was perfect combination of privacy and seclusion while still being close to attractions.

  • 5 of 5

Our family loved the short stay. Cabin was beautiful and surrounding acreage was so peaceful. Our dogs were in heaven running the fields and playing in the stream. Shirley was very attentive throughout the rental process insuring our stay was great. Cabin is well appointed and has a cozy feel. Great location which offers privacy while close enough to Asheville, Lake Lure, Chimney Rock and more. Definitely worth the stay. We will be back.

Beautiful Cabin, but Owner Unwilling to Believe There was a Problem

  • 1 of 5

DH & I decided to go to Lake Lure overnight for our 18th Anniv d/t our plans getting rained out. Mrs. F was kind & ok'd our, very, last min request to stay in her cabin. I thought the $ to book the place for <24 hrs was kind of absurd, but we decided to go anyway. We arrived at 4pm, & the cabin was beautiful. You can tell it has been very well cared for & it was quiet & private. There is a trail on the property, so we went down to hike 1st thing, but it was so overgrown that we had to turn back at a certain point for fear we might be snake bitten & not be able to call for help since there was basically no cell service. Smart. We encountered a copperhead on the bridge when we got back to the driveway. DH killed it, not a big deal. I decided to shower. I got soaped up & looked down just as a lizard ran past my foot. I let out a scream of terror, & DH came running in there & opened the door just as a 2nd one came up out of the drain. I dove out of the shower covered in soap & DH found a bucket, caught the lizards, & let them go outside. Ok. Crisis averted. We left to go get dinner a little later. We came back & were going to get in the hot tub. DH went to change his clothes, & there was a mouse in the bedroom. He chased it all over the BR & LR trying to catch it, but it was too fast. I was trying to call Mrs F. to let her know what was going on & to get some help to catch it, I don't do rodents, but you can't even call her because her phone isn't set up to call long distance. That makes all kind of sense being they live in AK. We went up to the deck & tried & tried to get a call/text out which took forever d/t the spotty signal. She kept telling us to go up the trail to a tree that had a signal. She wanted us to go up the overgrown trail in the dark. Um, heck no. We finally got her & she said, "I find that hard to believe". She offered us no help & told us to sleep in the loft. She expected us to sleep there with a mouse on the loose. I didn't sleep 1 min. We left at 6:30am. We were there for 14.5 hrs. She refused to refund us 1 cent of our $ because "I don't feel that I owe you anything", & her mgr didn't find any signs of a 🐭being there. What a shock? I'm not mad that animals got in the house. It sits in the woods & is vacant a lot. Things are going to get in there occasionally. The issue is, I had a horrible experience & was treated like I was lying. She refuses to believe anything could ever be wrong w/ her house or that she could be wrong.
