Wonderful stay at a charming beach house!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived the day Hermine rolled through, and though that made our arrival (and the drive up the 4x4 beach) complicated, Karen was wonderful and kept texting us updates and advice. When we did get to the house, we just went right into relaxation mode. It's charming, quaint, has plenty of modern touches, and the view is incredible. Nothing much can beat a warm cup of coffee on a cool morning on the porch listening and watching the ocean rolling. We saw horses everyday, and on the last morning, were gifted to see one walking through the dunes in front of us about 50 yards out. The water was beautiful (had some incredible dolphin sightings too!), the other people in the area were friendly, and the beach was wonderful. It's so nice to stay away from the busy crowds a bit further south, but to take a ride into town for some groceries isn't too far either, maybe 20-25 to Corolla and 40 min to Duck. All in all, we had an amazing stay and will look to stay there again next year!

Awesome location but dirty house...

  • 2 of 5

We arrived early & saw that the cleaners were still at the house (2:30 pm). We went to the beach to wait for the house to be finished. 3:30 a big storm starts to roll in so I contact the agency and ask if there was any chance the house was done yet. She said it wasn't and that she will text me when its available so we get in the truck and start heading toward Corolla to get some lunch while we wait out the storm. 4:30 I get a text saying it was open. We get to the house and the first thing I notice when I walked in was all the flies in the house. There are STILL NO SCREENS ON THE WINDOWS OR DOORS like they have been promising to install in all the other posts about this issue since 2014... So we bring in all of our belongings & I am noticing how dirty the house is. Dead bug guts all over the walls! The counters and dining table had dried glass rings with crumbs and dust dried into them. The stove and oven were also dirty and covered in grease. Only ONE bed had fresh linens on it, the one queen bed had short black animal hair all over it, both twin beds had human hair on them & they were wrinkled like its been slept in, not just freshly cleaned & changed. I took the sheets from the clean bed & put it on the one we were sleeping in. EVERY SINGLE BLANKET IN THAT HOUSE HAS STAINS ALL OVER THEM! I tried washing the twin sheets in the "washer" they have in the basement & it did not agitate so the washer was useless. Wednesday we had to drive to the ONLY LAUNDROMAT on the OBX, all the way in Nags Head to do our laundry. The water is so filled with iron that I felt like i was showering in a bath of coins! It gave off such a horrible odor that I had a headache after every "shower". The toilets & showers are so incredibly stained from the water. The bathrooms were not cleaned as there was body hair on the shower walls, tub and toilets. We had to go into Corolla to get a PUR water filter for the kitchen tap so we could at least brush our teeth with tolerable water. I had to buy cleaning supplies so I COULD CLEAN A HOUSE THAT I PAID TO HAVE CLEANED!!! When I brought this to Karens (property manager) attention she assured me it was cleaned & that they must have rushed because I called to ask if the house was ready. They were there for at least 2 hours. Nothing was done other than the floors. It didn't take me 2 hours to clean it. The game room they advertise has nothing that works, no nintendo, nothing in that room. They offered a $50credit for another stay, I declined.

Owner's Response: Yvonne, I am sorry Bayberry Dune did not meet your expectations. The house is and older beach cottage and the water is well water. Very high iron content when you are on our little strip of sand. I can assure you the house was clean. My very best housekeepers care for that house, and even the owners who came a week later commented on the cleanliness of the house. The linens come wrapped in plastic from a regional laundry service. Every bed certainly has it's linens changed!! I hope you enjoyed your vacation nonetheless.

Can I Come Back Right Now?

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at several houses in the Outer Banks, and I loved this one. Great setup, unique style, lots of convenient features. The tap water has a lot of iron in it, and some of the windows are still without screens, but this wasn't a huge issue for us. We stayed for our honeymoon, and when we walked in, the owners had a bottle of champagne and some chocolates for us, in addition to a sample of local tea, some travel hygiene products, and a tide chart, and some water bottles. I'm not sure if the chocolate and champagne was a special touch because they knew we were honeymooning, but the rest of the welcome package was very thought out and convenient (especially the drinking water, due to the tap situation). They also sent us a bunch of info before our trip, and had a binder with all the information in it (restaurants, activities to do without leaving the 4x4 area, and basic info about the house). I love coming to the same home when I stay on the Banks because it makes me feel even more at home, and I'm so glad I found this one. It's a keeper.

What a perfect nest and tranquil paradise. Everything was great, including the

weather. Can't wait to return. The only suggestion I'd like to make is adding screens

to the windows to allow for fresh air flow in temperate weather. This has been noted

by the owners/managers in previous reviews. cheers.

Great Stay

  • 4 of 5

My family and I loved this place. The house was perfect for the four us and our lab. We loved the location being just over the dunes to the beach and it made for great sunrises enjoying coffee on the covered front porch and watching the dolphins, or horses. Our first couple days there the weather was nice enough to have the windows open and on our first morning we were cordially awakened by four or five of the natives that were up feeding on the dune next to house. The house being located at the south end of the 4x4 beaches made it nice not driving too far up the beach to get there. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was that not all the windows had screens and it would have been so nice to open all the windows at night and let the breeze blow through the house. The other and it really wasn't the owners fault but previous guests must have really enjoyed fish and seafood as it took a couple boxes of Arm & Hammer and a few days to get the odor out of the fridge and freezer. We would definitely stay again without hesitation though.

The weather was wonderful! I stayed two weeks and couldn't have asked for better weather. I've stayed in Carova three times now (Spring and Fall) and stayed somewhere different each time. This location was great. Not too many stairs for my older dogs. I was able to figure out a way to cordon off the stairs so my dogs could stay outside on the deck. Most of the deck is covered but there is a small area which is large enough for sunbathing if you don't want to trek to the beach. There was a bit of traffic on the beach over labor day weekend, but the week ended up not too busy. My only complaint was that there were no screens on the windows or the doors so they couldn't be opened to enjoy the breezes and the sound of the ocean. Bayberry Dune is only about 3 miles from the macadam which made it really easy to go into town.
